  • Patent number: 6800246
Abstract: A method and apparatus for significantly reducing the biological load on consumer products such as food products, spices, produce, botanicals, cosmetic ingredients, barrels, pallets, crates, birdseed and medical products is disclosed. The method involves applying a continuous stream of saturated steam to a material in a sealed biological burden reduction chamber. The continuous stream of saturated steam is created in said chamber by correlating a desired temperature to pressure based on the use of Saturated Steam Tables. The apparatus includes: (a) a bioburden reduction chamber; (b) a temperature controller; (c) an air injection system; (d) a steam injection system; and (e) an evacuation system.

  • Patent number: 6800252
Abstract: A burstable bead system including a support having a surface, and a plurality of beads mounted on the surface of the support, with each of the beads comprising an outer wall defining an interior space. The outer wall of each of the beads is flexibly deformable by pressure applied to the outer wall, and is ruptureable by pressure applied to the outer wall to create an opening in the outer wall into the interior space of the bead. A scent vapor is located in the interior space of the bead such that application of pressure to the outer wall of the bead on the surface of the support releases the scent vapor from the interior space of the bead and into an environment exterior to the bead.

  • Patent number: 6797235
Abstract: The present invention provides a device for modifying an atmosphere in proximity to the device, the device comprising a sachet comprising a semipermeable material, and a composition including a mixture of acetylsalicylic acid and sodium bicarbonate contained within a cavity of the sachet. The invention further provides methods for modifying an atmosphere comprising placing a mixture of a carboxylic acid and a base in the atmosphere, wherein the atmosphere has a sufficient level of water vapor such that, upon contact of the water vapor with the mixture, carbon dioxide is produced.

  • Patent number: 6797234
Abstract: A device and method for cleaning and sterilizing tubular structures particularly, long, narrow tubular structures such as lumens of a medical device such as an endoscope by reversing the flow of fluid in interconnected tubular structures. The device comprises a first and second valve in fluid communication with a first and second tubular structure. The valves selectively switch between a first and second position causing a first and second flow path within the tubular structures, at least a part of the second flow path opposite the first flow path.

  • Patent number: 6797245
Abstract: A washing vessel capable of housing an endoscope is formed in an apparatus body. A washing solution containing a detergent is spurted against the endoscope arranged within the washing vessel for washing the endoscope. Also, an oxide-based disinfecting-sterilizing solution is supplied into the washing vessel for disinfecting-sterilizing the endoscope after the washing step together with the washing vessel.

  • Patent number: 6793883
Abstract: A method and system for reducing stress corrosion cracking in a hot water system, such as a nuclear reactor, by reducing the electrochemical corrosion potential of components exposed to high temperature water within the structure. The method includes the steps of: providing a reducing species to the high temperature water; and providing a plurality of noble metal nanoparticles having a mean particle size of up to about 100 nm to the high temperature water during operation of the hot water system. The catalytic nanoparticles, which may contain at least one noble metal, form a colloidal suspension in the high temperature water and provide a catalytic surface on which a reducing species reacts with least one oxidizing species present in the high temperature water. The concentration of the oxidizing species is reduced by reaction with the reducing species on the catalytic surface, thereby reducing the electrochemical corrosion potential of the component.

  • Patent number: 6793882
Abstract: A container (30) for use in sterilizing an object has a first end (35) and a second end (38). The container (30) is suitably sized to receive an endoscopic telescope (45) for sterilization. Once the endoscopic telescope (45) has been inserted into the container (30), a lid (46) having a vapour permeable section (47) is fitted to the container. The container and object are then sterilized, for example, by autoclaving. After sterilization, use of the container requires a noon-sterile nurse in an operating theatre to push the ends (35, 38) together. A collapsible or deformable portion (42) collapses and the ends (35, 38) move closer together to thereby force the telescope (45) out of the container (30), where is can be removed by a sterile nurse.
