  • Patent number: 12084931
Abstract: A tool comprises a tool body having a bore, a secondary chamber within the tool body, a flow port between the bore and the secondary chamber; a cover component within the bore moveable between at least two positions along the length of the bore, and a control arrangement connected to control movement of the cover component within the bore. The control arrangement comprises a moveable piston and a guide component, one of which has a track and the other has a protruding element received in the track. In a first position, the cover component covers an entrance to the flow port, so that fluid flowing along the bore may not flow into the flow port. In a second position, the cover component does not cover the entrance to the flow port, so that fluid flowing along the bore may flow through the flow port and into the secondary chamber.

  • Patent number: 12078052
Abstract: The disclosure presents processes to determine the direction and magnitude of tubing eccentricity along the length of a tube inserted within a borehole. The tubing can be a wireline, a drill string, a drill pipe, or tubing capable of allowing fluid or other material to flow through it. As borehole operations proceed, the tubing can move toward the side of the borehole. This eccentricity can cause excess wear and tear on the tubing, on the casing of the borehole, or on the inner surface of the subterranean formation. The eccentricity can be measured using acoustic signals that are collected downhole covering the azimuthal angles 0° to 360° at a location in the borehole. The collected signals can be filtered, transformed, and analyzed to estimate the tubing eccentricity. Other processes and systems can use the results to obtain cement bond evaluations through tubing and to determine preventative or restorative actions.

  • Patent number: 12065893
Abstract: A method of handling pipe segments during makeup and breakout of a drill string. The method uses a hydraulic circuit, which provides fluid to a motor or motors for translating a drill pipe segment. The drill pipe segment is supported by a carriage, which places the segment next to a drill string for addition thereto. Hydraulic pressure within the circuit is monitored to determine if a pressure fluctuation exists. If so, the translation speed is adjusted by modifying the hydraulic fluid flow to the motors. Sensors may be utilized to determine whether or not the system is in a “transition zone” and therefore ready for pressure monitoring for makeup and breakout functions.

  • Patent number: 12060756
Abstract: A bottomhole assembly (BHA) located on a conveyance string for actuating downhole tools in a wellbore, such as sleeve valves. The bottomhole assembly has a shifting tool that is capable of being hydraulically actuated independently of a mechanically actuated treatment tool also located on the BHA. The shifting tool has hydraulically actuated shifting dogs for engaging with the sleeve valves, and a shifting-assist mechanism for applying a downhole force on the BHA. The treatment tool is mechanically actuated via manipulation of the conveyance string to isolate the wellbore, for example to treat a formation through an opened sleeve valve. A hydraulically cycled flow control valve can be located on the BHA for more convenient control of the fluid flow and pressure in the BHA. The BHA can also have a repositioning mechanism for positioning the shifting tool downhole of an opened sleeve valve without requiring repositioning of the entire BHA.

  • Patent number: 12000216
Abstract: A pipe assembly has a hollow inner member nested within a hollow outer member. A series of pipe assemblies are connected end-to-end to form a dual-member drill string useful in horizontal directional drilling operations. The drill string has mutually exclusive first and second fluid paths. Fluid seals, interposed between adjacent inner members of the string, isolate the first fluid path from the second fluid path. Compressed air is delivered into the first fluid path from above ground level, and routed to an underground boring tool. The expelled air and spoils are returned to above ground level by way of the second fluid path. One or more baffle elements are supported on the drill string adjacent the boring tool. The baffle elements are configured to prevent compressed air and spoils from flowing between the walls of the borehole and the drill string.
