Abstract: Methods and systems to separate seismic data associated with impulsive and non-impulsive sources are described. The impulsive and non-impulsive sources may be towed through a body of water by separate survey vessels. Receivers of one or more streamers towed through the body of water above a subterranean formation generate seismic data that represents a reflected wavefield produced by the subterranean formation in response to separate source wavefields generated by simultaneous activation of the impulsive source and the non-impulsive source. Methods and systems include separating the seismic data into impulsive source seismic data associated with the impulsive source and non-impulsive source seismic data associated with the non-impulsive.

  • Patent number: 11366241
Abstract: A computer-implemented method includes the following. A frequency sweep using sweep parameters is emitted from a vibratory seismic source into geological layers. The sweep parameters include frequencies and modulation parameters for seismic waves. Signals are received from one or more sensors. The signals include seismic data acquisition information, including values identifying energy reflected back from boundaries where rock properties change. A determination is made regarding which of the reflected seismic waves are attenuated. The determination uses an integral transform and a thresholding algorithm for image segmentation. Optimum sweep parameters are determined based on the reflected seismic values that are attenuated and updated to compensate for local geology effects. The emitting, receiving, determining attenuation, determining optimum parameters, and updating are repeated until the received signals are determined to be satisfactory.

  • Patent number: 11360184
Abstract: Sensor receiver nulls and null steering. One example embodiment is method in which a direction from a sensor position to a noise source is determined. A coordinate rotation is applied to a first set of signal values, wherein each signal value of the first set of signal values is based on an output of a corresponding component of a three-component particle motion sensor at the sensor position. The applying generates a rotated set of signal values. The coordinate rotation comprises a coordinate rotation transforming a first set of coordinate axes to a second set of coordinate axes, wherein the first set of coordinate axes has each coordinate axis aligned with a corresponding component of the three-component particle motion sensor at the sensor position, and the second set of coordinate axes comprises a first axis pointed in a direction opposite the direction from the sensor position to the noise source.

  • Patent number: 11346970
Abstract: Seismic data from seismic exploration surveys are mapped into a hypercube of bins or voxels in a four-dimensional space (X, Y, Offset, and Azimuth) according to Common Mid-Point (or CMP) between source and receivers. The mapped data from individual voxels or bins is then analyzed by multimodal statistics. Robust estimates of first break picks are obtained from the analysis. The first break picks are then used to as seed inputs for autopicking iteration, which proceeds to convergence. Estimates of confidence levels in the data are provided for re-picking to reduce computer processing time in successive autopicking iterations. Analysis is provided of different seismic attributes such as azimuthal velocity variations indicative of anisotropy, positioning errors of sources/receivers, geometry errors, and three dimensional distribution of inversion residuals. Analysis is also performed of standard deviation of the travel time data useful for estimating data errors in the inversion covariance matrix.

  • Patent number: 11327200
Abstract: A wireless seismic data acquisition unit with a wireless receiver providing access to a common remote time reference shared by wireless seismic data acquisition units in a seismic system. The receiver can replicate local version of remote time epoch to which a seismic sensor analog-to-digital converter is synchronized. The receiver can replicate local version of remote common time reference to time stamp local node events. The receiver can be placed in a low power, non-operational state over periods of time during which the unit continues to record seismic data, thus conserving unit battery power. The system corrects the local time clock based on intermittent access to the common remote time reference. The system corrects the local time clock via a voltage controlled oscillator to account for environmentally induced timing errors.

  • Patent number: 11280923
Abstract: Receiver-consistent scalars of seismic receiver channels are used for time-lapse monitoring of a sub-surface earth formation. Signals are induced by seismic waves propagating through the earth formation adjacent to each respective seismic receiver channel. Each seismic receiver channel is acoustically coupled to the earth formation as present directly adjacent to the location of the seismic receiver channel in question. The base receiver-consistent scalars and the monitor receiver-consistent scalars of seismic receiver channels can be outputted to reveal changes in these receiver-consistent scalars. These changes can be used to delineate information about physical changes in the subsurface earth formation. The changes in the based receiver-consistent scalars and the monitor receiver-consistent scalars may be displayed visually.

Abstract: A method for computing amplitude independent gradient for seismic velocity inversion in a frequency domain includes receiving seismic data associated with a region. The region comprises one or more earth subsurface layers represented by a plurality of points, and each point is associated with a seismic velocity. Seismic velocities at the plurality of points are determined by iteratively updating the seismic velocities based on a plurality of gradient values, where each gradient value corresponds to a point and is determined by evaluating a gradient of an objective function at a location of the point. A seismic image of the one or more earth subsurface layers is displayed based on the determined seismic velocities.

Abstract: PP and PS seismic data are jointly inverted in a stratigraphic grid, using different time axes for PP and PS reflections. A ratio of PP and of PS waves'travel times inside a same layer cell maintained to be a function of a ratio of a P-wave propagation velocity and of an S-wave propagation velocity therein. Since PP and PS seismic amplitudes and travel times are due to elastic properties of the same structure, they can be inverted at the same time to provide better estimates of these elastic properties.

  • Patent number: 11143016
Abstract: Methods are disclosed for evaluating a material on a remote side of a partition separating first and second domains wherein flexural waves within the partition are received by spaced-apart ultrasonic receivers and processed to determine the velocity of the waves propagating into the second domain from a first receiver to a second receiver located more remote from the transmitter than the first receiver and whose separation from the first receiver is known. Comparison of a theoretical phase velocity with the measured phase velocity of the recorded waves allows determination as to whether the flexural wave is propagating through solid. This may be based on a measurable deviation between the two curves occurring at a critical frequency, which may be identified by a perturbation in a group velocity plot. Discrimination may also be based on the gradient of a straight line that best-fits the attention dispersion of the frequency spectrum.
