Abstract: The present invention provides a casting die that can achieve the improved fluidity of molten metal and the improved ease release of castings from die. The casting die 10 comprises area of dimples D where a plurality of first dimples are formed in semispherical shape on the surface of the cavity 11 with no particular indication of direction and in a dispersed manner and where the ratio of communication is 80% or more, which ratio of communication is defined by the ratio of the number of the first dimples 12 that constitute the bound dimples 12b, which each comprise one or more of the dimples, to the total number of the first dimples 12. So, in the area of dimples D a number of bound dimples 12b that work as short flow-channels that have no particular indication of direction are randomly formed, thus improving the fluidity of the molten metal.

  • Patent number: 8381794
Abstract: Mold for the continuous casting of preliminary sections, in particular double T-shaped preliminary sections, such as beam blank sections or similar sections, wherein all the interior walls of the mold in a mold passage have a tapered course running linearly from top to bottom, this tapered course being dimensioned depending on the degree of shrinkage of the cast strand and produced by machining the interior walls. In this manner, it is possible to optimally adjust the diameter of the mold to the shrinkage process of the cast strand in the region of the mold passage, even for large-sized sections.

  • Patent number: 8376027
Abstract: It is a technical common knowledge that a chaplet used in casting of a hollow casting is fusion-bonded with the melt and is incorporated into the casting. However, the adhesion between the chaplet and the casting body is not necessarily satisfactory, thereby incurring the strength reduction of a thin-wall hollow casting. A core for a thin-wall hollow casting according to the present invention is provided with a chaplet mounted thereon. The chaplet has arcuate portion 2 with a gap 5 and a plurality of projections 4 from an outer peripheral of the arcuate portion and is in contact with an inner wall 7 of a mold. The entire arcuate portion of the chaplet is included in a groove 6 formed around an outer peripheral portion of the core body. Only the projections 4 of the chaplet protrude from the core body, when the chaplet is inserted in the groove.

  • Patent number: 8365807
Abstract: The invention provides a method of reducing butt curl during DC casting of a metal ingot. The ingot is cast in at least two stages, including an initial casting stage and then a steady-state casting stage carried out at higher casting speed. The emerging ingot is cooled by directing a liquid coolant onto its outer surface. During the first casting stage, the liquid coolant is directed in the form of at least two streams, including a constant first stream in the form of a series of first jets, and an intermittent second stream in the form of a series of second jets. The first and second jets impact the outer surface at locations spaced from each other peripherally and/or longitudinally of the ingot. Both the first and second streams experience film boiling when they contact the ingot. The invention includes apparatus for the method.

  • Patent number: 8360135
Abstract: At the operation of a suction pump, a negative pressure is generated in a supply-side pipe line, a cooling passageway of a mold, and a return-side pipe line. Cooling water stored in a water tank is sucked by the negative pressure, flows from a first feed-water inlet to the supply-side pipe line, flows through the supply-side pipe line, and enters the cooling passageway of the mold. After the cooling water cools down the mold while flowing through the cooling passageway of the mold, it flows out to the return-side pipe line. Additionally, at the operation of the suction pump, a negative pressure is also generated in a bypass pipe line. The cooling water stored in the water tank is sucked by the negative pressure, flows from a second feed-water port to the bypass pipe line, and enters the return-side pipe line via the bypass pipe line.
