  • Patent number: 6992584
Abstract: A mobile device (MS) is disclosed comprising a GPS receiver (14) and an audible alarm (13, 15) configured to sound, during operation of the GPS receiver, in response to either adverse performance of the GPS receiver or to an event which is adverse or likely to be adverse to the performance of the GPS receiver. The alarm may sound in response to the inability of the GPS receiver to either acquire or track a GPS signal, or obtain or maintain a position fix. Also, the alarm may sound in response to movement of the GPS receiver, including acceleration and higher order movement of the GPS receiver, in so far as that movement is adverse to the performance of the GPS receiver.

  • Patent number: 6987454
Abstract: Power management using radio frequency identification (RFID) tags is disclosed. A device is equipped or connected with a low power detector that can detect the proximity of an RFID tag worn by a user of the device. The RFID tag preferably obtains energy from the detector and transmits a signal back to the detector telling the detector that the tag is in the vicinity. If the tag is too far away from the detector, the RFID tag is unable to respond as a result the detector will notice the absence of the tag. If the device detects the user is near the device, then the device manages power differently than when the user is not near the device.

  • Patent number: 6982630
Abstract: A vibrating push button station to be associated with a standard traffic signal of the kind used to control vehicular traffic at an intersection so that visually impaired pedestrians will be alerted when the pedestrian WALK signal is illuminated after first pressing a push button. The push button station includes an electromagnetic assembly that is adapted to generate a changing magnetic field following the depression of the push button. A magnet coupled to the push button by way of a flexible diaphragm is either pulled towards and repelled or simply released by the electromagnetic assembly as the magnetic field changes. The opposite movements of the magnet relative to the electromagnetic assembly is transmitted to the push button as a vibration so that the hand of a user will receive a tactile indication at the push button when vehicular traffic has been halted.

  • Patent number: 6980117
Abstract: A method, system and computer program product for adaptively tracking the position of an entry portal, such as an automatic garage door. In accordance with the present invention a transmitter assembly senses and transmits the sensed position of the door position in a periodic manner at a predetermined transmit interval. A receiver assembly including a receiver module receives the transmitted door position signals and synchronizes the activation of the receiver module with the transmit interval such that the receiver receives the door position signals transmitted at the predetermined transmit interval. A receiver output indicator is then updated in accordance with the entry portal position determined by the received door position signal.

  • Patent number: 6975221
Abstract: A luggage identifier for air and rail travelers uniquely identifies a luggage piece on a airport carousel or train station conveyer belt. A battery powered remote radio wave transmitter carried by the passenger sends a radio wave to a battery powered receiving and activating mechanism associated with the luggage piece. The transmitted signal triggers a latch release mechanism connected to a flexible flagpole that is held under spring tension in the collapsed state. Upon being triggered, the latch release mechanism releases the flagpole, which is driven to an extended state under spring power. Identifiers carried by the flagpole are thereby moved into a conspicuously visible position, which facilitates identification of the luggage piece. The identifiers can comprise LED lights mounted on the flexible flagpole, a colored puffball, a name flag, and a sound generation mechanism.

  • Patent number: 6970090
Abstract: A pet tracking collar comprises a length of clear flexible tubing having a fastener adapted to fasten around the pet. Hermetically sealed within the tubing is an electrical ribbon cable extending through the length thereof. A plurality of light-emitting diodes, visible through the clear tubing, are wirelessly connected at spaced intervals to the cable. The tracking collar also includes an antenna within the electrical ribbon cable, and a radio transmitter secured to the cable adapted to transmit a radio frequency signal. The cable is secured within the flexible tubing such that strain along the length of the tubing is not transmitted to the cable therein. The collar's battery compartment has sufficient clearance between the battery and walls of the battery compartment to shed water after the collar is wetted. A radio frequency signal receiver determines direction or distance of the collar with respect to the receiver.

Abstract: This invention includes a circuit for displaying charge status to a user. The circuit includes circuitry for comparing a supply or reference voltage to a cell voltage, circuitry for sensing charging current and circuitry for displaying at least one of three charging states to a user. The circuit compares the supply or reference voltage to the cell voltage while sensing current. If the difference between the supply or reference voltage is great, and current is small, the circuit indicates a trickle charging mode. If the charging current is large, the circuit indicates rapid charge. If the difference between the supply or reference voltage is small, and the current is small, the circuit indicates a top off mode. The circuit preferably includes a plurality of comparators for both sensing and comparing the voltages and currents. A pair of light emitting diodes preferably indicates the state of charge to the user.

  • Patent number: 6956473
Abstract: An alarm system having the capability to self-adjust or self-calibrate itself is disclosed. The system includes an alarm controller and at least one sensor that generates a signal that corresponds to the magnitude of a detected event. The signal evaluator is part of the alarm controller and receives the magnitude signal from the sensor. The signal evaluator compares the magnitude signal to a user-defined or preset alarm sensor sensitivity threshold and generates an alarm signal if the magnitude signal exceeds the alarm signal sensitivity threshold. If repeated alarm signals are generated, an alarm threshold adjuster will adjust the sensor sensitivity threshold to a point where repeated magnitude signals will be ignored. The system will reset itself to the original user-defined or preset sensor sensitivity threshold levels after a predetermined time of no alarm signal generation. The alarm signals generated will activate an alarm annunciator, which generates an alarm.

  • Patent number: 6954146
Abstract: In a method for determining the state of a road during driving of a motor vehicle, the sound which is generated when a vehicle tire rolls on an underlying surface is sensed. A frequency signal is determined by means of a sound level signal which describes the sound, and is divided into at least two sub-zones by means of at least one limiting frequency. The sub-zones are each assigned to an associated frequency band, and an intensity value is determined for each of at least two frequency bands from the assigned sub-zone of the frequency signal. The intensity value is characteristic of the sound intensity which is present in a frequency band. An intensity ratio is formed from two intensity values by dividing the first intensity value of the first frequency band by the second intensity value of the second frequency band, and is used to determine the state of a road.

  • Patent number: 6952167
Abstract: An output of a resonant circuit 60 which electromagnetically couples with an external communications apparatus is rectified and taken out, and a resultant output voltage V is monitored by a switch control circuit 61. After the output voltage V has risen to or beyond a threshold Vth1, a switch element SW is turned on and off, and a state of the switch element SW in which the output voltage V becomes higher is determined. While holding the switch element SW in the state thus determined, a power supply switch element PSW is turned on when the output voltage V has further risen. As a result, even when a plurality of noncontact IC cards 6 overlaid with one another are brought close to the communications apparatus, the individual noncontact IC cards 6 can carry out data communication.
