  • Patent number: 4780577
Abstract: An electrical bushing of a gas insulated electrical apparatus comprises an insulating tube, a central conductor extending through the insulating tube and a cylindrical shield disposed between the central conductor which is electrically connectable to ground at one end and has an electrical field moderating ring integrally formed therewith at the other end thereof. The central conductor has a reduced diameter portion in the vicinity of the electric field moderating ring of the cylindrical shield and large diameter portions and tapered portions connecting the reduced diameter portion to the large diameter portions. Thus, since the reduced diameter portion is formed in a region where the electric field strength is high, the concentration of the electric field in that region is moderated, thereby resulting in an improvement in the withstand voltage characteristic of the bushing. The reduced diameter portion can be formed as a separate member.

  • Patent number: 4778949
Abstract: A wire entrance fitting for eliminating leakage through a side wall of a tank has a tubular member which is externally threaded at opposed ends. Plural, threaded members are received in the tubular member and extend through an encapsulating, generally inert material. A first end of the threaded members receives an exposed wire from a cathodic protection system positioned in the tank for inhibiting corrosion, is crimped thereto, and sealingly encapsulated by a resinous material. A second end of the threaded members extends outwardly from the tank for connection to an external power supply. A flange is disposed along the tubular member and extends outwardly therefrom. The flange facilitates receipt of a junction box in one arrangement and positions an elastomeric seal member along an inner face of the tank side wall in a second arrangement.

  • Patent number: 4777327
Abstract: A weight is installed in a vertical plane above a subject line. Gravity pulls the weight to an initial angle of about 140 degrees from the starting plane and thereby twists the line. The twist angle remains fixed so long as no gallop occurs. During galloping motion of the line, the initial twist is decreased as the line approaches the peak of motion and reinduced as the line leaves the peak. The line correspondingly rotates between zero degrees added twist and beyond about 140 degrees, the initial added twist angle. The rotation of the line continuously changes the profile of the air foil of the line formed by ice frozen about the line, and thereby dampens air lift and galloping of the line. The weight is attached to the line by a grip and a pair of brackets secured to the grip at one end and fitted through a slot in the weight at opposite ends.

  • Patent number: 4774385
Abstract: An electrical bushing for use with a gas insulated electrical apparatus comprises an insulating tube, a central conductor extending through said insulating tube, a grounded cylindrical shield disposed between the central conductor and the insulating tube, an intermediate shield disposed between, and electrically insulated from, the cylindrical shield and the central conductor so as to surround the latter. The intermediate shield has a reduced diameter portion in the vicinity of the free end of the grounded cylindrical shield, large diameter portions and tapered portions connecting the reduced diameter portion to the large diameter portions to provide a smooth distribution of the electric field between the central conductor and the field moderating ring, so that the concentration of the electric field is moderated by the grounded shield and the intermediate shield.

Projecting in the opposite direction from the spark shield are five laterally spaced fingers provided with inwardly facing arcuate grooves which are aligned transversely for the reception of an electric fence wire. Laterally spaced secondary legs inwardly of the main legs are shaped to provide two pairs of split circular retainers of different diameters for the frictional retention of different size rod type fence posts.

  • Patent number: 4763090
Abstract: A coaxial-line section includes an outer conductor and an inner conductor tube centered coaxially inside the outer conductor and contacted by couplings which are supported by insulators or beads. The couplings are provided at their facing ends with a ring of laminated springs which allow the thermal expansion of the inner conductor tube. Extending inside along the inner conductor tube are two preferably bar-shaped displacement compensating elements. The axial inner end of each displacement compensating element is firmly anchored to the inner conductor tube while its axial outer free end defines with the end faces of the respective coupling a stop face.

  • Patent number: 4760213
Abstract: A lightning conductor having an electrically conductive surface element insulated from an earth rod. The surface element is substantially continuous, but has an aperture defining an air gap. The air gap is located near the top of the earth rod. In atmospheric conditions existing before lightning discharges, arcing occurs between the surface element and the earth rod. This creates plasma about the tip of the earth rod, leading to upward leader formation. A high impedance static drain may be connected between the surface element and the earth rod.

  • Patent number: 4757157
Abstract: The invention relates to undersea cable transmission links including submerged repeaters, and more particularly it relates to a housing for such a repeater. The repeater housing includes a very rigid, watertight metal box (12) coated with an external polyethylene sheath (124, 125, 126) preventing the box from coming into contact with sea water, and electrically isolating it from the sea environment. The coated box is placed in a tubular casing (10) which is very strong in traction. The repeater includes a metal sleeve (130) placed inside the tubular casing (10) over the outer sheath of the metal box (12) and provided with studs (11) passing through the tubular casing (10) via suitable openings. The sleeve reduces the thermal resistance of the housing by short circuiting the thermal resistance of the tubular casing to a considerable extent.

  • Patent number: 4752652
Abstract: An anti-short bushing, for use between a tubular metal sheath and an electrical conductor carried within the metal sheath, comprising a tubular insulative unit configured to be inserted between the sheath and the conductor. The tubular insulative unit is formed as a single molded piece having three connected segments. • Patent number: 4749824
Abstract: A high performance, high voltage electrical insulator, for use at greater than 15 Kv in wet, contaminated conditions, is designed to give a minimum surface area while maintaining a low leakage current by specifying the ratios of shed diameter to shed pitch, leakage distance between support fittings to the straight line distance between support fittings, and the shed diameter to the support rod diameter. Through the use of specified silicone elastomeric compositions, or through the use of silicone compositions meeting specified electrical properties, an insulator meeting the design specifications is shown to be a useful high voltage insulator.

  • Patent number: 4746766
Abstract: A flexing connector for suppressing electromagnetic radiation from an electrical cable connecting moving and stationary elements of a machine has a shield surrounding a signal cable which includes an inner coil of wire wound in a generally helicoidal form with a flat cross-section with the signal cable positioned within the coil. An outer coil similar to the first, but with somewhat larger cross-section and wound with a different chirality, surrounds the inner coil. The coils are made from hardened steel, which is both electrically conductive and ferromagnetic. The two coils and the cable are clamped together on either side of a moving loop extending between the moving and stationary elements so that the coils cannot elongate and spread their windings apart as the connector is flexed.
