  • Patent number: 5540772
Abstract: A method and apparatus are disclosed for forming thin films of chemical compounds utilized in integrated circuits. The method includes steps of forming a precursor liquid comprising a chemical compound in a solvent, providing a substrate within a vacuum deposition chamber, producing a mist of the precursor liquid, and flowing the mist into the deposition chamber while maintaining the chamber at ambient temperature to deposit a layer of the precursor liquid on the substrate. The liquid is dried to form a thin film of a solid material on the substrate, then the integrated circuit is completed to include at least a portion of the film of solid material in a component of the integrated circuit.

  • Patent number: 5529626
Abstract: A spincup having a wafer backside deposition reduction apparatus is used to reduce wafer backside particle deposition of materials on a wafer during processing. The spincup includes an opening for accommodating a wafer supporting chuck and a particle guard which circumscribes the chuck. The particle guard contacts the base of the spincup and circumscribes the chuck. When the chuck supports a wafer, a wafer backside region is defined between the chuck and the particle guard. The spincup further includes an exhaust channel coupled to the wafer backside region to independently exhaust the wafer backside region. In one embodiment, the exhaust channel includes an exhaust port for connecting a vacuum generator to the exhaust channel and a shroud contacting a base of the spincup and the particle guard. In another embodiment, the exhaust channel includes exhaust tubes which replace the exhaust manifold shroud and exhaust port.

  • Patent number: 5522929
Abstract: This invention improves a machine that has a squeegee-like blade that wipes across an apertured mask to apply to a printed circuit board solder paste or other conductive mounting material. The apparatus and method of the invention involve reciprocating the blade back and forth transverse to the direction of blade sweep across the mask, during the material-applying sweep of the blade across the mask. The reciprocating movement of the blade, combined with the sweep movement, deposits material onto the printed circuit board with high fidelity and with minimal voids.

  • Patent number: 5520738
Abstract: A device for applying bronze or similar powder, particularly in a cigarette making machine, uses a corona discharge wire (36) or similar conductor maintained at high voltage to establish an electrostatic field which causes powder to be attracted to prepared adhesive patches on a paper web (14). Excess powder carried by the web is removed with the assistance of vibration, which may be produced by passing the web over an ultrasound device (44) or a pulsed air mover (102). Excess powder may also be removed by an air mover (152) directing a stream of air at the surface of the web carrying the powder.

  • Patent number: 5513594
Abstract: An apparatus for releasably clamping a substrate to a support platform, or other support system, at a face of the substrate is described. In one embodiment, a retractable clamp holds a substrate near its edges on a support platform when the clamp is in its fully extended position. One or more leaf springs are mounted to the clamp and apply force to the substrate at respective points in the event the substrate adheres to the clamp, thereby releasing the substrate from the clamp. In a preferred embodiment of the present invention, one or more activators are positioned in cooperative relationship to the leaf springs to cause the leaf springs to retract into recesses in the clamp when the clamp is extended against the substrate. In their retracted position, the leaf springs do not contact the substrate so as to minimize the generation of particle contamination and the chance of the release leaf springs themselves adhering to the substrate.

  • Patent number: 5514214
Abstract: Hard substrates such as ophthalmic lenses or molds are coated with a UV curable monomer which is polymerized to construct a scratch resistant coating on a surface of the lens. The present invention is directed to an apparatus for and method of applying the UV curable monomer to the surface of the ophthalmic lens or mold. Polymerization of the monomer occurs by radiation of UV light while the lens is encased in a curing chamber. The spin coater of the present invention has the following advantages: Excess monomer is collected in a dish away from UV exposure and is readily disposed of. The substrate is revolved at a high rate of speed during the application of the coating to achieve a uniform coating of monomer. Only the holder and substrate are moved to the curing chamber minimizing the items exposed to UV light. The UV light is electrodeless, it has a standby mode and operates cyclically during use so as to prolong its life and to allow a greater degree of control over extent of polymerization.

  • Patent number: 5512101
Abstract: In the bottom of a seed vessel containing seeds is provided a throughhole through which a seed supply rod is longitudinally movably passed. The supply rod is connected to an actuator to be movably driven. When the supply rod is moved upwardly, it carries a small number of seeds on the top surface thereof to bring the seeds close to a suction tip so that the suction tip sucks one seed therefrom. Since the suction tip sucks one seed from the limited number of seeds on top of the supply rod, it becomes unlikely that a plurality of seeds sucked into the suction tip interfere with each other to cause the suction tip to make errors in sucking seeds.

  • Patent number: 5507872
Abstract: A contact-based microdispensing tool for delivering extremely minute globules of epoxy material to repaired sites on high circuit density modules. The tool includes a solid probe integrally mounted in a contact sensor assembly incorporating an air-levitated core of a linear voltage differential transducer. The levitated core and the probe connected thereto are supported in neutral equilibrium by an air bearing assembly. As the assembly probe is brought into contact with one of the sites, the globule flows upon the site, the equilibrium is disturbed and a signal is produced by the transducer to halt movement of the probe relative to the site.
