  • Patent number: 6687772
Abstract: A distributed control system includes a transducer having an electronic data sheet that enables it to be accessed via a variety of differing types of field-bus networks. The electronic data sheet stores a set of object information corresponding to a set of differing object models associated with the differing types of field-bus networks. The distributed control system includes a component node which couples to a particular one of the differing types of field-bus networks and which couples to the transducer through a standard interface. The component node translates between the particular one of the object models and the standard interface during an access of the transducer that originates on the particular one of the differing types of field-bus networks.

Abstract: A system for providing video-on-demand service, broadband internet access and other broadband services over T-carrier systems including a pull multiplexer cherrypicker at the head end is disclosed. The pull multiplexer receives upstream requests and cull out MPEG or other compressed video packets, IP packets and other data packet types to satisfy the requests or to send pushed programming downstream. The downstream can be DSL or HFC. Each customer has a cable modem, DSL modem or a gateway which interfaces multiple signal sources to a LAN to which settop decoders, digital phones, personal computers, digital FAX machines, video cameras, digital VCRs etc. can be attached. Each gateway can coupled the LAN to a DSL line or HFC through a cable modem or a satellite dish through a satellite transceiver. A PSTN and conventional TV antenna interface is also provided.

  • Patent number: 6664974
Abstract: A method for automatically determining whether a browser supports scalable vector graphics (“SVG”). The method uses a two prong process to make a proper detection for various types of browsers. The method includes using JavaScript to detect Multipurpose Internet Mail Extensions (“MIME”) types from the browser to detect SVG support. If scanning of the MIME types detects that SVG support is present, the requested web page containing SVG content is sent. If no SVG support is detected, the non-SVG version of the web page is sent to the browser. If the browser does not return a list of MIME types, the method of Visual Basic Scripting Edition language (“VBScript”) to instruct the browser to create an SVG object on the client device. If the object is created, SVG support has been detected, and the browser is served the web page having SVG content.

  • Patent number: 6662234
Abstract: A computer system controller monitors events. When a host processor enters a reduced-power state, the controller monitors network events, computer system events, and external events. The controller may respond to the events by transmitting frame data over the network. Before transmission, the frame data is stored in a memory.

  • Patent number: 6662233
Abstract: To provide an effective way to deliver high-bandwidth content to some users and low-high bandwidth to other users, two or more different versions are stored of a content element to be delivered from a server to a content recipient in a network. In response to a request for the content from the recipient, one of the versions is selected based on bandwidth capabilities of the recipient. The selected version is then delivered to the recipient.

  • Patent number: 6662232
Abstract: The invention relates to a system and method for re-transmitting an e-mail message transmitted from a sender to a recipient based upon predetermined criteria. The method performing the steps of prescribing at least one time period for performing messaging tasks and defining messaging tasks to be initiated for the e-mail message during the at least one prescribed time period. When an e-mail message is received in a recipients e-mail account a determination is made as to whether if the e-mail message was received within the at least one prescribed time period. And re-transmitting the e-mail message in accordance with the defined messaging tasks if the e-mail message was determined to be received within the prescribed time period.

  • Patent number: 6658481
Abstract: In a network processor-based device, there is provided a single routing table for network routers and an efficient routing algorithm implemented by the routing device. The routing table includes packet forwarding information including a subnet address associated with a destination address location, an ISO layer three (3) network protocol address, e.g., IP address, of a router interface that can route packets to the subnet address, and an identifier indicating whether that router is an exit BGP router that may or may not be directly attached to the packet forwarding router. A table look-up mechanism is provided to determine next hop information and determine associated BGP status of the next hop. At such time it is determined that a router is not a BGP router (i.e., is directly attached to the forwarding router), the packet will be transmitted to that router.

  • Patent number: 6654799
Abstract: A network management method which can provide a reduced number of communication transactions is disclosed. A processing object is recursively created for accessing a child managed object included in a parent manage object based on the tree structure. The information obtained by a child processing object is recursively returned to a parent processing object based on the tree structure. A collection of information received by the top managed-object instance is returned to the network manager. A network element device is added as a managed object to the network by the collection of information is stored in a managed-object instance corresponding to the network element device.

  • Patent number: 6647427
Abstract: Systems and methods are disclosed for switching servers in a network computer system comprising a plurality of servers each of which has a corresponding actual address, and all having an imaginary address in common. According to the disclosed systems and methods, a packet containing a network trailer addressed to an imaginary network address is transmitted to a gateway. The gateway generates a new packet containing the network trailer, addresses the new packet with an actual IP address of one of a plurality of servers according to states of the system, and then transmits the new packet to the server. The server periodically informs the gateway of a state of its own imaginary network address, and the gateway updates its own IP address correspondence table. For remote servers interconnected via a WAN environment, service may be provided to a client by one remote server taking over the service provided by another in the same manner as if the server were adjacent to each other.

  • Patent number: 6643697
Abstract: A network communications system comprises a plurality of configurations of user stations (16, 18, 20, 22, 24), each with respective processing and display capability. From a plurality of service provider host systems coupled via data network such as the Internet, one host server (10) has at least some of the system users and their respective user station or stations registered as client stations. Each registered client station of a single user is arranged to access network services via the host server (10), with the host server arranged to format data to be sent to any of the client stations of said single user according to a pre-stored format for that user.

  • Patent number: 6643704
Abstract: In a network communications system, a user device (70) includes a communications subsystem operable to establish communications with selected servers (72, 74, 90, 92) of the system. Also included are domain master stations (82, 84) connected to monitor communications traffic loading at each of a respective group of servers. In order to avoid traffic overcrowding at individual servers, a redirector station (78) is provided coupled with the domain master stations and accessible by the user device (70). The redirector station is arranged to select an optimum server (74) to handle communications of a user device on the basis of both the physical location of that server relative to the user device and its current communications traffic loading and, having made its selection, it instructs the user device to re-establish network communications via the selected server.

  • Patent number: 6636885
Abstract: A method and system is provided for delaying the loading of classes that are unnecessary the start-up of an applet when a server sends an applet to a client. Methods and systems consistent with the present invention package the class files necessary for start-up of the applet on the client in a single archive file along with relatively small interface classes that reference the delayed classes This archive file, being smaller, saves download time and can be sent with a single connection from the server computer to the client computer, as opposed to multiple connections. These methods and systems consistent with the present invention also provide a way for the client computer to request the delayed classes not included in the initial archive file if the delayed class is later needed by the client computer.

  • Patent number: 6633919
Abstract: Throughput of a request (e.g., a write request) is enhanced by allowing a receiver of the request to reply to the request before fully receiving the entire request. This reduces the delay between the time that the receiver completes a request and the time that the sender sees that the request is finished, and allows other requests to be forwarded prior to completion of the first request. The other requests that are forwarded, however, are processed in the order of receipt. Additionally, any errors that occur in a request after the reply is sent is forwarded to the sender of the request, even though the reply has previously been sent.

  • Patent number: 6622173
Abstract: An automatic message prediction system operable in a communications system including a transmitter and a receiver is disclosed. The receiver receives at least a portion of a message and tries to identify from the message portion, a message previously received by the receiver. If successful, the receiver calculates a checksum for the previously received message and transmits the checksum as a prediction of the remainder of the message to the transmitter. On receipt from the transmitter of an indication that the prediction is correct, the receiver completes the message from the previously received message.
