  • Patent number: 7918821
Abstract: A syringe comprises a generally-cylindrical, hollow barrel with a hollow nozzle at a distal end thereof. A plunger with an open channel is slidably mounted in the barrel. A needle holder with a needle mounted at one end thereof is arranged in the plunger channel, and movable between an advanced position, whereat the needle projects from a distal end of the nozzle for injection, and a retracted position, whereat the needle is enclosed within the barrel when the injection is complete. A spring retainer is arranged in the barrel. A spring is positioned within the spring retainer, urging the needle holder toward the retracted position. A latch latches the needle holder to the spring retainer thereby maintaining the spring in compression. The latch is releasable in response to the plunger moving to its fully advanced position, whereby the needle holder is released, allowing the spring to expand and thereby move the needle holder to the retracted position.

  • Patent number: 7914482
Abstract: An apparatus and method to suppress vacuum surges in a surgical aspiration system is disclosed and claimed. A vacuum surge suppressor includes a first fluid path for coupling to a surgical instrument, and a filter attached to the first fluid path. A flow restrictor is coupled to the filter with the filter disposed upstream of the flow restrictor. The vacuum surge suppressor also includes a second fluid path for coupling to a vacuum pump. The second fluid path is connected to the flow restrictor and disposed downstream of the flow restrictor. The second fluid path defines a path internal pressure. A third fluid path is coupled to the filter and is connected to the second fluid path, bypassing the flow restrictor. A valve in the third fluid path obstructs flow in the third fluid path in response to the path internal pressure.

  • Patent number: 7896845
Abstract: A surgical portal assembly includes a portal member adapted for positioning within tissue. The portal member defines a central longitudinal axis and has a longitudinal passageway for permitting passage of a surgical object. In addition, the portal member includes a seal mount. A seal member is mounted within the seal mount of the portal member. Further, the seal member has inner surface portions defining a passage for receiving the surgical object. Aside from the seal member, the surgical portal assembly contains a plurality of seal magnets mounted to the seal member. The seal magnets are arranged with respect to the passage of the seal member whereby respective poles of the seal magnets generate an attractive force to draw the inner surface portions of the seal member about the surgical object to facilitate establishing a substantial sealing relation therewith.

  • Patent number: 7887513
Abstract: A chemical liquid injection system which a piston driving mechanism is driven only when a cylinder holding mechanism appropriately holds liquid syringes of various sizes through a cylinder adapter and such manner. When the liquid syringe 200S of a size other than the maximum size is appropriately held by the cylinder holding mechanism 120, RFID chip 230 is located on the side at the rear of metallic cylinder holding mechanism 120. A pair of resonance antennas are disposed on the left and right of the RFID chip, and an RFID reader 131 is disposed below the resonance antennas. When the liquid syringe 200S is appropriately held by the cylinder holding mechanism 120, RFID chip 230 wirelessly communicates with RFID reader 131 favorably, and the piston driving mechanism can be operated only in this state.

  • Patent number: 7875001
Abstract: A nasal spray apparatus for simultaneously administrating metered amounts of multiple medicaments includes chambers for separately storing incompatible medicaments, such as an antihistamine and a steroid. Reciprocal piston pumps allow the medications to be sprayed into the user's nasal cavity. Two pumps can be used to separately transfer the medicaments to a receptacle where they can be initially mixed just prior to administration. A small volume receptacle is used to reduce the amount of mixture remaining after each stroke of the nasal spray apparatus. A check valve can be associated with each pump to further reduce medicament mixtures from cross contamination within storage chamber preparations. Collapsible components, including collapsible storage chambers or balloon capacitors can be employed to compensate for vacuums and back pressures as the medicaments are pumped to a spray nozzle.

  • Patent number: 7846131
Abstract: An administration feeding set for use with a flow control apparatus to deliver fluid from at least one fluid source to a patient. The feeding set includes tubing adapted to extend from the fluid source for flow of fluid through the tubing from the fluid source toward a patient. A locating finger projects outwardly from the tubing and is positioned on the tubing so that when received on the flow control apparatus in an operating position the finger permits a locating member of the flow control apparatus to close. However, when the tubing is received on the flow control apparatus in a non-operating position the finger does not permit the locating member to close thereby to verify whether the tubing is in the operating position on the flow control apparatus.

  • Patent number: 7842008
Abstract: A system and method is provided for an injectable substance delivery device comprising a limiter, shoulder or post, that controls how deep the needle is inserted into the tissue. The limiter is sized in proportions that control the maximum insertion depth of the needle into the tissue without excessively restricting the complete insertion of the needle. The system and method further comprises an normalization or stabilizer ring that prevents distortion of the tissue in the vicinity of the infusion, so that the needle length is the major determining factor as to how deep the infusion is delivered.

  • Patent number: 7824363
Abstract: A hands-free breast pump that includes a balanced push-pull reciprocating drive system that applies pumping force to a vacuum chamber formed by a breast interface cup during inward and outward pump strokes. The breast pump includes a breast cup that has a resilient bellows structure that partially collapses the volume of the vacuum chamber during the inward stroke and recovers the volume of the vacuum chamber during the outward stroke. The pump mechanism includes a cam drive system that translates rotary electric motor power into reciprocating linear action of an actuator arm that drives the bellows structure. The bellows structure acts like a spring that charges (resists the pump force) during the inward stroke and discharges (assists the pump force) during the outward stroke, and the shape of the cam track is designed to produce a desired operating profile for the pump.

  • Patent number: 7819837
Abstract: A flow control device includes a housing having a motor chamber and a pump chamber. The motor chamber has an outlet for communication with a fluid collection device, and an inlet for communication with an aspiration line through which fluids are delivered into the motor chamber. First and second motor rotors are rotatably disposed in a flow path between the inlet and the outlet in the motor chamber, and a drive shaft is coupled to the first motor rotor. The pump chamber has an outlet for infusing fluid to a surgical site, and an inlet through which infusion fluids are delivered into the pump chamber. First and second pump rotors are rotatably disposed in a flow path between the inlet and the outlet in the pump chamber, where the first pump rotor is coupled to the drive shaft. The drive shaft drives the pump rotors at the same speed as the motor rotors, such that any surge in aspiration flow induces a similar surge in infusion flow.
