Abstract: Apparatus and methods provide for a high specific power electro-dynamo device that utilizes high-temperature superconductors, a dysprosium core, and superconducting coils to provide power. According to various embodiments, a rotor includes a number of rotor arms with a high-temperature superconductor attached to each arm. A stator includes a number of stator arms with stator coils wrapped around each arm. The stator coils may include superconducting wires for providing a charge to the high-temperature superconductors and non-superconducting wires for inducing a voltage from the trapped flux provided by the superconductors during operation in generator mode. The dysprosium core maximizes the magnetic flux saturated by the core while providing additional safety measures during operation. A backup power wheel or permanent magnets positioned in series with the high-temperature superconductors may provide emergency power at non-cryogenic temperatures.

  • Patent number: 8008813
Abstract: An improved linear motor is provided useful in conjunction with audio equipment for reduced distortion audio output at high voice coil displacements. The improved linear motor may include a yoke, a gap plate which forms an air gap with the yoke, magnets coupled to the yoke and the gap plate, a former, and a voice coil coupled to the former. The magnets generate a magnetic field across the air gap, which is relatively narrow. The former and coil fit in the air gap and may move in a vertical direction. The voice coil includes more than one segment, each having differing electrical resistance. The differing resistances cause the force on the voice coil to be uniform regardless of displacement of the voice coil vertically within the air gap. Resistance differences between the segments may be caused by differing the wire lengths making up each segment of the coil. Likewise, each segment may be made of differing material to vary resistance.

  • Patent number: 7868490
Abstract: When currents are applied to driving coils, electromagnetic forces are generated between the currents and magnetic fluxes passing through gaps, a shaft member is swung in one direction, and a tilt angle of a mirror (controlled object) changes relative to a support center point. Electromotive forces generated in detection coils when the magnetic fluxes pass through the detection coils are given as feedback signals to a control unit. The control unit generates currents on the basis of the feedback signals, and applies the currents to the driving coils. By detecting the velocity of the mirror during swinging with the detection coils, the structure of the actuator can be simplified. Further, the responsivity can be increased, and the tilt angle of the mirror can be detected with high accuracy.
