Abstract: A thermoelectric element wherein connecting members for effecting electrical connection and mechanical engagement are attached securely to the cold-end portion of a thermoelectric elemental body consisting of a p-type semiconductor and an n-type semiconductor joined with each other to form a pn junction therebetween. A support member surrounds the end portion.
Abstract: The products of a molten salt combustion of hazardous wastes are converted into a cooled gas, which can be filtered to remove hazardous particulate material, and a dry flowable mixture of salts, which can be recycled for use in the molten salt combustion, by means of gas/liquid contact between the gaseous products of combustion of the hazardous waste and a solution produced by quenching the spent melt from such molten salt combustion. The process results in maximizing the proportion of useful materials recovered from the molten salt combustion and minimizing the volume of material which must be discarded. In a preferred embodiment a spray dryer treatment is used to achieve the desired gas/liquid contact.
Abstract: An improved thermocouple and method for making the thermocouple and installing same on the fireside of heat exchanger tubes or the like for monitoring surface temperature which includes a thermocouple assembly made from mineral oxide insulated metal sheathed thermocouple wires where a pair of thermocouple wires or conductors extend through a metal sheath in spaced apart and insulated relation from each other and from the sheath and are connected together at an end to define a hot junction member adapted to be mounted in engagement with the surface being measured, which hot junction is defined by a disk or bar-shaped member extending from the end of the sheated conductor assembly beyond the insulation and sheath but not in contact with the sheath. Installation on a heat exchanger tube includes welding the sheath to the tube which pressurizes the hot junction against the temperature measured surface and defines a heat energy path that bypasses the hot junction.
Abstract: A composition is described useful in the production of tritium in a nuclear eactor. Lithium aluminate particles are dispersed in a matrix of zirconium. Tritium produced by the reactor of neutrons with the lithium are absorbed by the zirconium, thereby decreasing gas pressure within capsules carrying the material.

Abstract: A method of enhancing the thermal desorption of a first isotope of a diatomic gas from a metal comprises the steps of (a) establishing a partial pressure of a second isotope of the diatomic gas in vicinity of the metal; heating the metal to a temperature such that the first isotope is desorbed from the metal; and reducing the partial pressure of the desorbed first isotope while maintaining the partial pressure of the second isotope substantially constant. The method is especially useful for enhancing the desorption of tritium from the Zr-Al getter in a plasma confinement device.

Abstract: In a process for the preparation of mononitrochlorobenzene by nitration of chlorobenzene using a mixed acid of nitric acid and phosphoric acid, the nitration reaction is carried out by using a molar ratio of nitric acid to chlorobenzene of not more than equimol in the presence of a concentrated phosphoric acid as the phosphoric acid component at temperatures of 50.degree.-120.degree. C. while maintaining the concentration of phosphoric acid to 72.4 weight % as P.sub.2 O.sub.5 or more during the reaction.
Abstract: 1,3,5,7-Tetranitroxyadamantane is a novel propellant having desirably low pact sensitivity. It can be prepared by reacting 1,3,5,7-tetrahydroxyadamantane or 1,3,5,7-tetraacetoxyadamantane with mixed conc. nitric and sulfuric acids.

Abstract: A heat sensitive portion is cooled when a temperature of an object to be measured is higher than the standard temperature while a heat sensitive portion is heated when a temperature of an object to be measured is lower than the standard temperature by Peltier's effect owing to an electric current passing through a thermopile from the outside. Thus, the sensitivity of a thermopile can be improved with a device which is simple and has an inexpensive construction.
Abstract: A valve seat or similar article produced by sintering a compound body is improved in economy and producibility by employing a method wherein the amount of a second powder for forming the compound body is controlled so as to be minimized. A first powder is initially charged into a compression space and lightly compressed to form a preparatory compact of a desired shape. Subsequently, the second powder is charged in over the preparatory compact to a degree controlled by the displacement of the compact, and the preparatory compact and the second powder are forcefully compressively integrally molded to form a final compact which is then sintered to form the finished product.
Abstract: Metal-ceramic composites may be prepared by treating the ceramic component of the composite with a second metal prior to subjecting the metal-ceramic composite to a sintering operation. By pretreating the ceramic component of the composite, it is possible to obtain a composite which will undergo sintering at an elevated temperature to form a composite which will possess desirable characteristics such as increased density, hardness and low thermal coefficient of expansion, thus enabling the composites to be utilized in a wide variety of applications.
Abstract: This invention relates to the immobilization of toxic, e.g., radioactive, materials in a silicate glass or silica gel matrix for extremely long periods of time. Toxic materials, such as radioactive wastes containing radioactive cations, which may be in the form of liquids, or solids dissolved or dispersed in liquids or gases, are incorporated into a glass or silica gel matrix, having alkali metal, Group Ib metal and/or ammonium cations bonded to silicon atoms of said glass or silica gel through divalent oxygen linkages, by a process which involves the ion exchange of said toxic or radioactive cations with said alkali metal, Group Ib metal and/or ammonium cations to bind said toxic or radioactive cations to silicon atoms of said glass or silica gel through said silicon-bonded divalent oxygen linkages.
