  • Patent number: 5537816
Abstract: An engine air/fuel controller (12) is responsive to a two-state exhaust gas oxygen sensor (16) positioned upstream of a three-way catalytic converter (20) and a proportional exhaust gas oxygen sensor (24) positioned downstream of the catalytic converter. A base fuel signal is trimmed by a feedback variable derived by integrating (402-428) the upstream (16) sensor output. The feedback variable is biased towards leaner air/fuel ratios when a distribution of the downstream sensor output amplitudes has a peak value indicating a rich air/fuel ratio. And the feedback variable is biased towards richer air/fuel ratios when the downstream sensor output distribution has a peak value indicating a lean air/fuel ratio (320-396).

  • Patent number: 5537817
Abstract: An air-fuel ratio control system for an internal combustion engine having first and second catalytic converters arranged in the exhaust passage comprises first to third exhaust gas component concentration sensors arranged in the exhaust passage, the first one being arranged upstream of the first catalytic converter, the second one at a location intermediate between the first and second catalytic converters, and the third one downstream of the second catalytic converter. An ECU carries out feedback control of the air-fuel ratio of a mixture supplied to the engine to a desired air-fuel ratio in response to an output from the first exhaust gas component concentration sensor. A first feedback control parameter for use in the feedback control is calculated, based on an output from the second exhaust gas component concentration sensor.

  • Patent number: 5524435
Abstract: The exhaust gas of a motor vehicle is cleaned of contaminants by passing the gas through an inclinded partition box disposed within a shell container, wherein a plurality of collection cylinders are supported by the box for separating the exhaust gas contaminants which are collected in a waste bucket. The water vapor in the exhaust gas is condensed by air received in and discharged from the shell container through filters at both ends thereof.

  • Patent number: 5526239
Abstract: A combination headlamp for a motor vehicle in which at least two headlamps with reflectors are contained in a lamp chamber defined by a capsule like lamp body and a synthetic resin front lens secured to the front opening of the lamp body. The front lens includes protruded portions, substantially circular when viewed from the front and shaped like a dish in cross-section, which are located and sized corresponding to the lamps. The front area of each of the dish-like protruded portions is curved outward, and is fringed with flare regions which expand outward and downward. With such a construction, the cross-sectional secondary moment of the front lens is great, so that the shock resistance of the front lens is high. The surface area of the front lens is also great, so that the heat resistance is improved.

  • Patent number: 5524434
Abstract: An internal combustion engine 12 in which liquid fuel is introduced prior to the charge entering the combustion chambers is mounted in a vehicle having an air scoop 34 which acts as a source of ram air pressurised by the movement of the vehicle. The ram air is fed into the exhaust system by way of an isolation valve 36 which is opened only during engine deceleration modes and serves to reduce emissions of unburnt hydrocarbons and carbon monoxide caused by the fuel wetting the intake manifold.

  • Patent number: 5522214
Abstract: The use of flexures in the form of flat spiral springs cut from sheet metal materials provides support for coaxial nonrotating linear reciprocating members in power conversion machinery, such as Stirling cycle engines or heat pumps. They permit operation with little or no rubbing contact or other wear mechanisms. The relatively movable members include one member having a hollow interior structure within which the flexures are located. The flexures permit limited axial movement between the interconnected members, but prevent adverse rotational movement and radial displacement from their desired coaxial positions.

  • Patent number: 5515679
Abstract: Method and apparatus for recovering and utilizing thermal energy from subterranean hot rock by means of a self-powered closed system which transfers heat from the hot rock to a relatively cool liquid, e.g. water, flowing in a heat-conducting pipe that extends in a loop descending from the earth's surface to and through the hot rock to a depth, e.g., in the range of 5,000 to 50,000 feet, and connects to the bottom of a heat-insulated riser in which the heated liquid flow ascends to the surface. The heated flow is processed at the surface to utilize recovered thermal energy and is cooled, and the cooled liquid is recycled to the hot rock. A plurality of descending pipe loops are disposed radially a horizontal distance away from said riser and each is connected to the riser. A manifold connecting said pipes at the surface permits rotation of the descending liquid among the pipe loops for continuous operation.

  • Patent number: 5515245
Abstract: A lamp (5) is mounted from a rear side of a motor vehicle headlight in an opening (4) at a crown of a reflector (3) of the headlight. A socket (6) of the lamp has a surrounding flange (11) with radial positioning ears (12) extending outwardly therefrom. The opening of the reflector is surrounded by an attaching ring (15) made of resinous-plastic and having spring tongues (16) formed thereon. The positioning ears of the lamp, can be moved between the tongues and the lamp can be screwed about its length axis so as to interengage the positioning ears with the spring tongues. In an end position of the lamp, the spring tongues lie biased against the positioning ears, pressing the flange of the lamp against a seating surface (26) which is formed on an inner rim portion of the attaching ring. The inner rim portion is arranged between the spring tongues and the reflector, to be spaced from the spring tongues.
