  • Patent number: 7355990
Abstract: A mobile device-to-HTTP protocol gateway (MHG, or “MO Gateway”) which translates between Wireless Mobile Originated commands from an SMSC, and an application server on the Internet (i.e., a “web IP Server”). A wireless Internet gateway establishes communications with one or more relevant SMSCs using standard format SMPP commands, and the MHG utilizes HTTP protocol POST messages to post short messages originated at the mobile device to a particular URL. Return results are received by the MHG via HTTP protocol messages, translated to SMPP messages, and forwarded back to the SMSC for delivery to the mobile device. The wireless Internet Gateway communicates with the MHG using RMI protocol commands. An MHG in accordance with the principles of the present invention enables a developer to create mobile applications using standard web development tools, e.g., Java Servlets.

  • Patent number: 7349699
Abstract: Overlay and underlay carriers are used to transmit traffic over a cellular network for a call associated with a mobile terminal. A method involves determining which one of the underlay carrier and the overlay carrier is to carry the traffic as a function of a resource parameter associated with a resource for transmitting the traffic and a mobility parameter of the mobile terminal. In some implementations, the method is applied at for example a base station to a plurality of calls associated with various mobile terminals within a cell and the calls are assigned to the underlay carrier and the overlay carrier using an optimization routine that optimizes a function associated with the capacity while imposing a constraint such as for example a constraint on a hand-off rate between the carriers.

  • Patent number: 7346336
Abstract: A rescue device has a motion detector and a transceiver that either transmits a locating signal, which can be tracked by others, when worn by user and operated in a transmit mode or receives and tracks a locating signal transmitted by another transmitter when the device is operated by the user in a receive mode. A control logic circuit suppresses transmission of the locating signal unless a motion signal, generated by the motion detector responsive to the user's movement, indicates that the user has not moved for a predetermined time interval. Thus, the rescue device can transmit the locating signal when the user is motionless, providing notice that the user is immobile and aiding others in locating the user. When receiving, the device guides the user in locating the source of a transmitted locating signal to aid the user in locating an immobilized person or a building exit.

  • Patent number: 7336947
Abstract: Software is provided in a radio-based cellular communication networks by a subscriber station, which is checked into a cell and which contains software that can be provided. The subscriber station notifies a storage device of the cell that the software is available in the cell. The storage device then sends a message concerning the availability of the software to all of the subscriber stations checked into the cell. Another subscriber station, which is checked into the cell, can request the software by sending a message with a limited transmitting power so that the message can only be received by subscriber stations located at a distance from the requesting subscriber station that is small compared to the diameter of the cell. When the subscriber station storing the software has received the message sent by the requesting subscriber station, the software is immediately transmitted from that subscriber station to the requesting subscriber station.
