Abstract: The addition of a hydrophobic, organophilic, water-wettable fibrous material to foundry sands increases the flowability of the sand and enables the production of molds or cores from the foundry sand which retain the sharp edges of the mold, inhibits expansion defects, and provides a cleaner pattern conformity. The hydrophobic, organophilic, water-wettable fibrous material has negligible smoke and/or fumes and does not waterproof clay binders. The preferred hydrophobic, organophilic, water-wettable fibrous material is prepared from raw cotton from which the oils have not been removed.

Abstract: A polypropylene strap for use in packaging articles. The polypropylene strap has a high tensile strength, a low elongation, a high ridigity, a high abrasion resistance, and flexible surfaces, and it is not easily split in the longitudinal direction. This strap has superficial layers stretched at a low draw rate of 1.2-3, and a inner portion stretched at a high draw rate of 10-18. The total thickness of the superficial layers is 5-50% of the total thickness of the strap. The strap is manufactured by stretching a belt-like material, which has been extruded from a die, in the lengthwise direction thereof at a volume ratio of 4-9, heating the surfaces of the resulting belt-like material to put the molecular chains in the superficial layers only thereof in a non-oriented state, and then stretching the belt-like material as a whole at a draw ratio of 1.2-3.

Abstract: A lubricant and release agent for the manufacture of tires containing as the active ingredient liquid polyoxypropylenediols or polyoxypropylenepolyoxyethylenediols or ethers of the diols, which liquid has a viscosity of at least 8000 mPa.times.sec. The use of the release agent of the present invention avoids the occurrence of defects in the interior surface of the vulcanized tire and improves the life of the rubber bags used in the unvulcanized carcass shell of the tire.
Abstract: Water-stable phenol-amine complexes of limited water solubility for use in a thermal-sensitive paper coating containing a chromogenic compound. The complexes contain phenolic hydroxy groups and amine groups in an essentially 2:1 ratio, the amines being low boiling amines. The phenols are of the class capable of forming amine complexes having a ratio of two hydroxyl groups for each amine group. The resulting coating compositions effectively resist premature color formation during formulation, and the coated papers produced exhibit enhanced stability.

Abstract: Conductive paint comprises an organic solvent having dissolved and dispersed therein a binder containing a thermosetting resin and a hydroquinone derivative which is a product resulting from reaction between a hydroquinone (polyhydric phenol) and a fatty acid having 10 to 20 carbon atoms, added to the thermosetting resin, metal powder as a conductive material, and preferably a fatty acid derived from natural oils and fats and having 10 to 20 carbon atoms. This conductive paint exhibits characteristics not inferior to those of the conventional Ag conductive paint, such as low specific resistance, high moisture resistance and high heat resistance, and is much less expensive than the conventional Ag conductive paint.

Abstract: Latex compositions comprising core-shell polymer particles are disclosed. The core has a glass transition temperature greater than 70.degree. C. The shell has a glass transition temperature of from about 25.degree. to 60.degree. C. The compositions form coalesced coatings that are resistant to ferrotyping.
Abstract: A composition for treating dental infections, e.g. dental caries caused by Strep. mutans, comprises a varnish containing an antimicrobial agent such as chlorhexidine acetate and benzoin gum in an orally acceptable liquid. The composition can be painted on teeth, allowed to dry thereon to give a transparent, translucent or tooth colored film which is effectively invisible but provides sustained release of the antimicrobial agent to the site of infection over a period of at least four days. The film can be removed at will, e.g. by application of the liquid varnish base.

Abstract: Method and apparatus for forming multi-layer expanded film. A base film extruded by a die (6) is coated, immediately downstream of the die mouth (5), by a further layer of fluid propelled from a manifold (16) through a metering orifice (19). The combination of manifold and metering orifice is necessary to permit accurate control of the flow rate of the fluid and hence of the thickness of the coating, and the mouth of the die and the metering orifice must be very close so that the base film is as resistant as possible to deflection by the impact of the coating fluid, and so that contact takes place before any substantial expansion has taken place. The downstream end of the resulting multi-layer tubular film is then held closed in known fashion and the closed tube is expanded by air under pressure admitted by an opening (7) in the die (6).

Abstract: Decorative moldings with non-uniform sections made of thermoplastic resin are produced by remolding. The material to be remolded is formed by cutting an extruded rod or combining an extruded rod with other parts and being placed in a mold. The material in the mold is heated and partially fused by high frequency dielectric heating. Then the fused portion of the material is cooled in the mold so that the material is partially remolded.
Abstract: Dental cements with syringate esters such as 2-ethylhexyl syringate with or without vanillate esters dissolved in o-ethoxybenzoic acid as ingredients of the liquid when mixed with metal oxide powder yield rapid setting, insoluble cements that have high strength, do not inhibit free radical polymerization, adhere strongly to metal, and reduce carries. Use of silanized glass filler to the powder in conjunction with the addition of monomer to the liquid gives an even stronger cement.
