  • Patent number: 6608816
Abstract: A method and apparatus for providing differentiated services using a multi-level queuing mechanism includes checking whether a packet of data is to receive a preferred level of service, and if the packet is not to receive the preferred level of service, then placing the packet in a first forwarding queue. However, if the packet of data is to receive the preferred level of service then checking whether it is permissible to forward the packet to a device in the network at the current time. If it is permissible to forward the packet to the device at the current time, then placing the packet in a second forwarding queue, otherwise temporarily placing the packet in a holding queue before placing the packet in the second forwarding queue.

  • Patent number: 6473442
Abstract: A communications system and method are provided that enables the balancing and rate matching of different types of services used simultaneously by a mobile terminal. More specifically, the communications system includes a network and mobile terminal either of which is capable of matching the bit rates of a plurality of transport channels each handling a service to a bit rate of a physical channel handling multiplexed services using relative offset measures and predefined rules. The network assigns and signals the relative offset measures to the mobile terminal.

  • Patent number: 6473401
Abstract: A system and method for avoiding internet congestion that employs a pseudo-serving mechanism that entails the use of a contract method of cooperatively sharing retained resources within the normal body of network requesters which thereby reduces the burden on heavily loaded servers and lowers both data congestion and expected user response times. Requesters, or their proxies, can elect to improve data access time by contracting for the data, whereby they warrant that they shall serve resources on a limited basis in exchange for speedier access to the data, the access to which is either granted directly, or through another pseudo-server. Congested servers thereby share their burden with the requesters constituting the burden, while requesting servers may exchange their unused bandwidth and memory resource for faster data access. Security features along with the fundamental incentives of the method allow for operation with variously uncooperative network servers.

  • Patent number: 6470021
Abstract: A packet switch includes a multiple of bidirectional ports that are each connected by dedicated signal paths to a multiple of memory subsystems that in turn are connected to shared memory within the switch. The signal path from each port carries a fragment of a data stream between the port and each memory subsystem. The ports send and receive data stream fragments in parallel from the memory subsystems. This parallel action reduces the bandwidth required of a memory subsystem by dividing the port's data stream among the multiple memory subsystems. In storing data for forwarding to another port, each memory subsystem selects on a time division basis in parallel the data stream fragments from the same port and stores them in memory. In retrieving data from memory for a port, each memory subsystem selects on a time division basis in parallel the same port to receive the data stream fragments read from memory.

  • Patent number: 6463055
Abstract: An integrated radio telecommunications network which integrates an ANSI-41 circuit switched network and a General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) packet data network to support a mobile station which operates in both the ANSI-41 network and the GPRS network. An interworking function interfaces a mobile switching center (MSC) in the ANSI-41 network with a serving GPRS switching node (SGSN) in the GPRS network by mapping circuit switched signaling utilized by the MSC into GPRS packet switched signaling utilized by the SGSN, and mapping GPRS packet switched signaling into circuit switched signaling. An interworking GPRS base station controller interfaces the SGSN with a GPRS/ANSI-136 base station which supports both ANSI-136 operations and GPRS operations. The interworking GPRS base station controller adapts the traffic signaling format utilized by the SGSN into an air interface traffic signaling format utilized by the GPRS/ANSI-136 base station.

  • Patent number: 6459695
Abstract: A method that rapidly and precisely determines the geographical location of areas of high concentration of usage (hot spots) and areas of poor RF frequency reception (dead spots) by measuring the number of failed call attempts, dropped calls and the like and comparing them to the identification of a mobile station and its location are recorded as record at selected points during a call. If a high number of uncompleted calls or dropped calls are recorded, then the base station can use the last known location of the wireless units involved to circumscribe an area in which the hot spot or dead spot occurs.

  • Patent number: 6449291
Abstract: A method and apparatus for time synchronization in a communications system such as a system including cable modems is provided. The synchronization method comprises the steps of receiving a first timestamp from a headend unit with the cable modem, and generating a first cable modem time reference with the cable modem in response to the receipt of the first timestamp. The cable modem then receives a second timestamp from the headend unit and generates a second cable modem time reference in response to the receipt of the second timestamp. A headend difference time comprising the difference of the first and second timestamps is then generated as is a cable modem difference time comprising the difference of the first and second cable modem time references. A clock error time that comprises the difference of the headend difference time and the cable modem difference time is then generated as well as a correction factor in response to the clock error time.

  • Patent number: 6430159
Abstract: The invention is for a system and method for performing forward error correction on an MPEG-2 transport stream that has optional error correction information embedded within the transport stream. An error correction operation is performed on a super group of packets within the transport stream. The error correction data is inserted into a created trailer group of MPEG-2 compliant transport stream packets having no payload, but only an adaptation field The trailer group packets are optional and therefore can be discarded by a standard MPEG-2 decoder, but can also be used to recover data lost in the transmission of the transport stream. The invention results in a system and method to correct an MPEG-2 transport stream that can be used in any one of the digital video broadcast (DVB) formats, without the need for error correction decoders which are specific to the DVB format.
