  • Patent number: 10231457
Abstract: A water treatment composition for treating a body of water is provided that provides visual feedback to the end-user of the effectiveness of the composition. The composition contains a majority of calcium hypochlorite particles; and an effective amount of colored particles containing an oxidizable pigment oxidizable dye and a water soluble material. The colored particles release the oxidizable dye to the body of the water to provide a transient color to the recreational water during dissolution of the composition in the body of water, the transient color providing a visual cue to the end-user signaling of the biocidal activity of the composition. Also provided is a method of applying the water treatment composition to recreational water.

  • Patent number: 10196293
Abstract: In accordance with one aspect of the invention a testing procedure, a processing procedure and a resulting product are provided whereby sewage sludge is primarily or firstly pre-hydrolyzed in whole or in part by means other than alkali. The alkali is then added to the pre-hydrolyzed product. The pre-hydrolyzed product from step one has a reduced potential for further hydrolysis and is more effectively stabilized in step 2 as a liquid biosolids-containing product or BSP. As a result, in accordance with the invention less of the alkali is used up in the step 2 further alkali-based hydrolysis of the pre-hydrolyzed product. The pH of the BSP product after the step 2 alkali treatment drops less over the period of storage and the BSP product will be better preserved against microbial regrowth.

  • Patent number: 10184033
Abstract: The synthesis of a silver-PMMA nanocomposite film includes mixing an aqueous extract of Trigonella foenum-graecum (also known as Helba and fenugreek) seeds with an aqueous solution of silver nitrate, thereby reducing the silver ions to silver metal nanoparticles. A solution of the silver nanoparticles is added to a solution of PMMA [poly (methyl methacrylate)] in N?N-dimethylformamide (DMF) with stirring at 90° C. A light brown solution of silver colloids develops, which is cast in a glass plate and the DMF is evaporated at room temperature, leaving a silver-PMMA nanocomposite film. Testing on water shows the silver-PMMA nanocomposite film prevents or inhibits growth of microbes, suggesting use as an antimicrobial or antibacterial agent, e.g., in water purification.

  • Patent number: 10131557
Abstract: There is described a process for treatment of a fluid comprising an oxidizable contaminant. The process comprises the step of contacting the wastewater with a combination of: (i) a sulfide, (ii) a complex of Fe(III) and a chelating agent, and (iii) an oxidant. It has been discovered that of treatment of a fluid containing an oxidizable contaminant employing iron(III)-chelates as the Fenton catalyst may be significantly improved by including a sulfide in the reaction scheme. As described herein, by employing sulfide ion, the present inventors have been able to: (i) increase the rate of iron recycling from minutes or hours to a few seconds, and (ii) destroy benzene in an oil and gas refinery (OGR) wastewater in less than one minute. It is believed that these findings in OGR wastewater can be extended to other fluids containing other oxidizable contaminants.
