  • Patent number: 6913718
Abstract: A method for formation of shaped components such as shaped absorbent cores, for disposable absorbent articles, contemplates that a relatively wide web of material be provided from which the components are cut. The web of material is longitudinally slit to form a plurality of subdivided webs each having shaped components arranged in serial relationship. The shaped components of adjacent ones of the subdivided webs are nested with each other, that is, a line extending longitudinally of the web extends through the components of adjacent subdivided webs. Efficient formation is facilitated by collecting the marginal portions of the web of material, and at least partially recycling the collected portions for formation of the wide web.

  • Patent number: 6890622
Abstract: An in-line formed, non-laminated web is suitable for use as a composite fluid distribution and fluid retention layer in a disposable absorbent article. The web can be formed by selective deposition of airlaid materials including absorbents, such as pulp and superabsorbents, together with binder fibers. The web so constructed will have a plurality of intermingled lower basis weight areas and higher basis weight areas coexisting and distributed in at least a central region of the web, the alternations crossing the X axis or Y axis, or both, of the web, with the higher basis weight areas being a greater thickness in the Z-direction than the lower basis weight areas. The web so constructed will further have no discrete material boundaries between the lower basis weight stripes and the higher basis weight stripes. Further the necessity of later processing on the web to achieve a ridged structure is removed and the fibers will remain whole and undisturbed.

  • Patent number: 6881506
Abstract: The invention is a new heat and fire resistant material and an improved wildland fire shelter and kit. The material is made of a woven silica-based cloth layered in several possible combinations with foil and fiberglass cloth layers. The layers can be arranged in a variety of sequences to minimize the thermal radiation to the inside of the material or shelter. However, a foil layer must always be the outermost layer to provide protection from radiant heat and a layer of foil must be present between the interior of the shelter or material and any layer of adhesive to limit accumulation of gases inside the shelter if the adhesive or other substance should break down when exposed to heat. The silica cloth, aluminum foil, and fiberglass cloth may be laminated or sewn together. The shape of the fire shelter is a half cylinder with ΒΌ sphere at each end. The shelter is contained in an easy-open polyvinyl bag which provides for quick removal and deployment of the fire shelter.

  • Patent number: 6878320
Abstract: An auxetic polymeric material is manufactured in a filamentary or fibrous form. The auxetic polymeric material has a negative Poisson ratio so that it has the property of expanding or contracting transversely to a direction in which it is extended or compressed. The process for forming the material involves cohering and extruding heated polymer powder so that the cohesion and extrusion is effected with spinning to produce auxetic filaments. Typically, the power is heated to a temperature sufficient to allow some degree of surface melting yet not high enough to enable bulk melting.

  • Patent number: 6875712
Abstract: A shrinkable protective material includes a nonwoven fabric bonded to a shrinkable film by an adhesive that is applied to either the nonwoven fabric or the shrinkable film in a pre-determined pattern. Upon shrinking, the nonwoven fabric separates or releases from the film and forms cushions or pillows holding the film off of the surface being protected. The edge portions of the cushions or pillows act as shock absorbers and deflect over the bonds, thus protecting the surface against the abrasive adhesively bonded portions.

  • Patent number: 6861380
Abstract: A tissue product containing a multi-layered paper web that has at least one layer formed from a blend of pulp fibers and synthetic fibers is provided. By containing at least one layer of synthetic and pulp fibers, it has been discovered that lint and slough of a tissue product formed according to the present invention can be substantially reduced. In addition, by limiting the amount and layers to which the synthetic fibers are applied, the increase in hydrophobicity and cost of the tissue product may be minimized, while still achieving the desired reduction in lint and slough. In some embodiments, the tendency of the synthetic fibers to sink or float in the fibrous furnish may be minimized to enhance processability by selecting certain types of synthetic fibers, e.g., those with a certain density imbalance.
