    Abstract: A mineral mining pick 1, a holder for such a pick, and the combination of such a pick with a holder 2. The pick has a head 3 with a cutting tip 5 and a shank 4 which is received in a shank socket 6 of the holder 2. Retaining means 7 is provided to releasably secure the pick in the holder. Extending through the pick is a water passage 11 which communicates with outlet ports 12 in the pick head for water flow to suppress dust and cool the tip 5. The passage 11 communicates with a socket 15 which mates with a tubular spigot 13 which is an extension to a fluid supply passage 2a in the holder 2. The spigot 13 is mounted by a resilient sleeve 22 in a tubular housing 19 by which it is removably retained in the holder 2. The sleeve 22 permits displacement of the spigot 13 to accommodate misalignment between the spigot and the socket 15 during coupling thereof as the shank is inserted into its socket 6.

    Abstract: A coring tool, which includes a flexible wire mesh in which the core is disposed, includes a mechanism for maintaining tension on the wire mesh sleeve which then seizes the core disposed within the sleeve, and which serves to retain the core and maintain it under tension. The sleeve is maintained under tension by tensile force transmitted to the sleeve through a stripper tube. The stripper tube is axially disposed through a piston ratchet assembly connected to a piston slidable within the drill string. The piston is resiliently urged upward within the drill string by a return spring but is longitudinally forced downward within the drill string and advanced downwardly with respect to the stripper tube by an increase in pressure within the drill string thereby compressing the return spring.

    Abstract: An instantaneous desired cutting position of a milling cutter or circular saw blade in a mobile apparatus for cutting hard materials, such as a concrete highway surface, is maintained even if the mobile apparatus travels over irregular or slanted surfaces. For this purpose the saw blade position is adjustable either by varying the position of the saw blade mounting in a machine frame or by varying the position of the entire machine frame. The position correction is accomplished by a sensor which produces control signals for a position correction power drive in response to pendulum movements which represent cutter or blade deviations from the desired cutting position. The position of the entire machine frame may be varied by raising or lowering a wheel remote from the cutter or blade. Thus, a binding or jamming of the cutter or blade is prevented.

    Abstract: A guide for a mineral mining machine, such as a plough, is composed of guide structures at the mineral face sides of the pans of a scraper-chain conveyor. Each guide structure defines upper and lower passages through which a chain for driving the machine passes. The passages are closed off from the mineral face side by a side plate or cover and from the top by means of a head plate. The head plate is detachable and is secured to, or located against, the side plate. The head plate and side plate have upstanding projections which form part of a guide rail for the machine. A foot plate projects beneath the lower passage to support the machine on the floor of a mine working. The guide structure preferably has reinforced end pieces fabricated by casting and the head plate lies between corresponding wall portions of these castings.

    Abstract: A bushing and wear protector that is releasably received within the socket of a bracket to rotatably mount a wear tooth on a roadway surface cutting machine. The bracket includes a socket for normally receiving the shank of a wear tooth. The present bushing and wear protector includes a spring sleeve for encircling the tooth shank for rotatably securing the tooth within the bracket socket. The tooth is held firmly in axial position in relation to the bracket but will facilitate rotary movement of the tooth therein. The bushing and wear protector also includes integral shoulder and flange provisions to cover and protect exposed surfaces of the bracket to avoid wear by impact and abrasion with roadway material, and from abrasion and impact from the wear tooth itself. The protector will wear at approximately the same rate as the tooth so both can be replaced at normal tooth replacement intervals.

    Abstract: A method and apparatus for laterally severing an asphalt layer to form a ribbon, separating the asphalt ribbon from an underlying base, elevating the separated asphalt ribbon, and fracturing the elevated asphalt ribbon by bending same. A ramp and elevating structure elevatingly guide the separated asphalt ribbon into a pair of breaker drums which are rotatable in opposite circumferential directions. Each breaker drum has protruding teeth which are arranged in laterally separated circumferential rows with the teeth in adjacent circumferential rows being preferably arcuately offset. Corresponding circumferential rows on the opposed breaker drums are laterally aligned and the teeth in those rows engage opposite surfaces of the asphalt ribbon during rotation of the breaker drums.

    Abstract: A method and apparatus is disclosed for deviated hole drilling upwardly and outwardly from beneath a shallow hydrocarbon formation pay zone. A large diameter vertical hole is first formed as by drilling below the pay zone. A first casing having a directional window provided in its wall is cemented in the large diameter hole. One or more casings are then provided in the borehole below the first casing. A carriage assembly loaded with drilling tools for drilling upwardly and outwardly is then lowered by means of a working drill string and landed within the first casing.The carriage assembly has a first passage in fluid communication with the drill string. The drilling tools are loaded within a second passage of the carriage assembly. The top opening of the second passage is below the directional window when the carriage assembly is landed and angularly oriented in the first casing.

The arms of the roller arm centralizer include shoulders to limit movement of the arms in the direction of the centralizer body which prevents the arms from being locked in a straight line adjacent to the centralizer body. The shoulders also prevent the arms from being forced into an undesired configuration; wherein one arm is parallel to the body and the other two arms form a "V", by an abrupt decrease in the bore diameter. The roller arm centralizer remains operative when passing through relatively narrow sections of well pipe or through well pipe having abrupt changes in diameter.

    Abstract: A mining machine is utilized for making original generally horizontal bores in coal steams, and for enlarging preexisting bores. A single cutting head is mounted for rotation about a first horizontal axis generally perpendicular to the dimension of elongation of the horizontal bore, and is pivotal about a second horizontal axis, parallel to the first axis, to change its cutting, vertical position within the bore. A non-rotatable body member, with side wall supports, is mounted posteriorly of the cutting head, and includes a conveyor mechanism and a power mechanism operatively connected to it. The machine can be sumped into a bore and then the cutting head rotated about the second axis to change the vertical position thereof, and then moved rearwardly, any cut material being continuously conveyed to the bore mouth by the conveyor mechanism.
