Abstract: A rock drilling bit has a plurality of rolling cutters for pulverizing rock. The loads on the bearings between these cutters and their mounting pins are extreme and are carried by a friction bearing. The bearing surface in the cutter has a plurality of spaced apart pockets filled with a material harder that the carburized hardened steel of the balance of the bearing surface and having essentially zero ductility. Such a bearing surface is made by machining a plurality of shallow pockets in the cylindrical bearing surface either before or after carburizing. If formed before carburizing, the pockets are painted off to prevent carburizing in that area. Each of the pockets is then filled with the wear resistant hard material as a weld deposit. Finally, the steel body is hardened and the exposed steel portions of the bearing surface and wear resistant material are ground to form a finished bearing surface. Bearing life is increased substantially as compared with the best known prior bearing.
Abstract: An emergency hydraulic system for a hydraulically powered device such as the power steering mechanism used on large earth-moving vehicles and the like is disclosed. The emergency system includes an auxiliary pump connected to the wheels or some other part of the vehicle so that the pump is operated despite engine failure whenever the vehicle is in motion. An inlet valve for the pump is held in the closed position whenever the vehicle prime mover is in operation so that the pump is deprived of operating fluid when an emergency condition does not exist. If the prime mover stops running so that the main hydraulic system is not operating and the power steering system is deprived of its source of power, the inlet to the emergency pump is opened so that the pump supplies operating fluid to the steering system so long as the vehicle is in motion. Since the pump is deprived of operating fluid when an emergency does not exist very little power is consumed.
Abstract: A servo steering gear for motor vehicles has an alleviator controlled, constant pressure servo system including an input member operatively connected to a steering wheel of a vehicle and an output member operatively connected to the steered wheels of the vehicle. A servo motor is operatively connected to the output member, and is controlled by an arrangement including valve elements so disposed that an automatic restoration of the steered wheels can take place and that pressure-loaded reaction faces provided on the valve elements generate a reaction which a driver of the vehicle can feel, and which, at least within a defined range, depends on the reactive forces generated by the steered wheels.
Abstract: In a solenoid-operated hydraulic brake pressure regulating valve assembly, a solenoid-operated valve and a pressure responsive valve are located in parallel connection between an inlet and an outlet, the solenoid-operated valve being closed when regenerative braking is in operation but open at all other times to provide communication between the inlet and the outlet, and the pressure-responsive valve being normally open but being adapted to close to isolate the inlet from the outlet after the solenoid-operated valve has closed and only after the pressure at the inlet has attained a predetermined value.
Abstract: A safety binding for ski boots comprising: a first holding element, mobile in relation to a ski about a vertical axis, for retaining one end of the boot; a second holding element, releasable under the action of an abnormally high vertical load, for retaining the other end of the boot; a connecting element for connecting the boot to the ski, comprising a resilient element restoring the boot to its axial position upon the ski. One end of this connecting element is secured to the ski by means of the mobile element. The binding has the special advantage of allowing the binding to release under the action of a lateral load, while keeping the boot permanently connected to the ski.
Abstract: A servo-steering control for a vehicle comprising a jack adapted to operate the steering mechanism including a source of fluid under pressure to supply the jack which fluid is under the control of a slide valve which in turn is controlled by means responsive to the angular separation between a drive shaft and a shaft connected to the steering mechanism; the shafts being connected for limited relative rotation.
Abstract: The interrelation of a vehicle and transmission and brake means therefor which are cooperatively dependent structurally and functionally, wherein a variable speed "stiff-hub" drive adapted particularly to bicycles and comprised of a constant mesh infinitely variable gearing with an input crank shaft and a wheel drive, and a control means which operates in conjunction with a single lever which also comprises the braking force actuator for simultaneous gear ratio and brake control.
Abstract: An earth working apparatus in the form of a dual frame offset disc implement includes first and second tongue members and a tow bar arranged for movement of first and second mobile frames between a side-by-side earth working position and a trailing relation while maintaining hydraulic communication between a hydraulic pressure system of a prime mover and each of a first pair of extensible members each connected to a respective one of the tongue members and to a respective one of the dual frames and to each of a second pair of extensible members each connected to a respective one of the dual frames and to wheel supporting axles for turning same to selectively raise and lower the respective dual frames thereby moving earth working members thereon out of and into earth working position.
Abstract: This invention relates to an improvement in folding girl's and tandem bicycles. The improvement expands the capability of bicycle folding means into girl's and tandem model configurations and provides a commonality of construction which can be incorporated into men's model configurations. The improvement disclosed is a detent for retaining the articulated latches securely locked thereby avoiding inadvertant release when the bicycle is ridden. An eccentric adjustment is provided to adjust out the looseness in the folding joints to overcome the problems of manufacturing tolerances and normal wear. Also disclosed is a tandem style which is no larger than the single rider model, except that it has provisions for a tandem seat and a tandem set of pedals.
Abstract: A manned welding and inspection vehicle for working within the interior of a pipeline or the like, the vehicle including two annular seals for aligning the vehicle in the pipeline and for sealing portions of the environment about the vehicle. The vehicle also includes an automatic welding system, the welding head of which is located in the front end of the vehicle and capable of welding a 360.degree. arc. The welding head also includes a fine adjustment mechanism to compensate for misalignments. Driven by the engine of the vehicle is a driving mechanism which is rugged and compact, and a fan for creating the proper air flow around the vehicle without disturbing the air flow at the welding site.

Abstract: A portable, collapsible air flow deflection apparatus detachably connectable to the roof of a motor vehicle for diverting air flow above and to the sides of the frontal surface of a vehicle in tow behind the motor vehicle. A pair of triangular, planar rigid panels are hinged along common edges and are relatively positioned at an angle thereabout to provide a V-shaped member. An internal planar frame cooperatively engages the hinged panels to fix the shape of the deflection member. Adjustable hold-down means secured to the frame compressively anchor the deflection member to the motor vehicle roof in an upright orientation, presenting a wedge-shaped deflection surface toward the front of the motor vehicle. Hinged and resilient portions along the lower edges of the deflection member adjust to the contour of the motor vehicle roof for presenting a continuous air deflection surface therewith.

Abstract: A cart having a wheeled metal frame and a plastic basket. The two sides, the front, and the bottom of the plastic basket are integrally molded, and are of open lattice construction. An endless metal ring encircles the upper edge of the basket, and also wraps around the corner posts of the metal cart frame to anchor the basket to the cart frame. The bottom portion of the basket is also anchored to the frame. The back panel of the basket is of latticed plastic, and is pivotally attached to the endless metal ring by support wires, which also function as bumpers to protect the plastic back panel during nesting of the carts. The rear edges of each side of the basket conform with the rear posts of the frame. A child's seat is incorporated into the back panel of the basket.
Abstract: A bicycle trailer comprises axle means having wheel means mounted on each end. A post member is latchably secured at one location to the axle means and at another location it is pivotally mounted to a hitching member which is to be secured onto a bicycle frame. Supporting members extend outwardly from the post member onto which container means are secured.
Abstract: For use with a machine including a wheel hub on a rotating shaft, moving-blade shafts secured to the hub and extended radially from the same, and fasteners on the moving-blade shafts, a bearing mounting for rotatably supporting each of the moving-blade shafts on the hub, characterized in that the wheel hub is formed with annular hollows of watertight design, each of which being open to an associated fastener on the hub facing the rotating shaft and accommodating a thrust roller bearing therein, and seals are located at the opening edges of each annular hollow in contact with the fastener.
Abstract: Molded plastic bearing housing formed as two individual sections at least one of which is adapted for placement over a bearing. The individual sections are each provided with mating, annular flange members which are fitted together and ultrasonically welded to form an integral one-piece bearing housing. Alternately, the individual sections are provided with matching annular projections which are positioned in abutting relationship and ultrasonically welded to form an integral bearing housing.
Abstract: In a method of preparing a low friction bearing having an inner bearing member, a housing and a low friction surface element therebetween, wherein the housing having an inner surface is constructed to surround the bearing member and said housing is comprised of a plurality of sections which cooperatively define the shape of the outer surface of the inner bearing element, the improvement comprising the steps:1. winding onto a mandrel a continuous strand of a bondable low friction thread comprised of low friction filaments and bondable filaments impregnated with a bondable resin which is in a solidified yet thermoplastic state;2. affixing the wound thread to the inner surface of at least one housing section;3. curing the resin to coalesce the threads and intergrate the turns of the threads to produce a low friction element; and4.
Abstract: First and second horizontally disposed parallel guide rods are provided to guide an object. First and second roller assemblies are fixed to the object and rollingly connect the object to the first guide rod and a third roller assembly fixed to the other side of the object rollingly connects the object to the second guide rod. The third roller assembly comprises a shaft fixed to the object and a roller carried by the shaft which rollingly rides on the top of the second guide rod. The first and second roller assemblies each comprise a shaft fixed to the object carrying first and second rollers spaced from each other along the shaft. The first and second rollers straddle the top of the first guide rod and rollingly ride on the upper surface thereof. The apparatus further comprises a shaft fixed to the object which carries a roller, the top of which rollingly engages with the lower surface of the first guide rod.
Abstract: A compliant bearing of the fixed or movable type for supporting heavy loads in compression, as advantageously used for coupling piers and scaffolds of a bridge or viaduct, has been developed using multiple layers of polychloroprene and fluorocarbon resin. A steel base plate provided with a recessed seat contains in ascending order: a first sheet of a fluorocarbon resin having a low coefficient of sliding friction, a thick layer of pressed polychloroprene having on its upper part a peripheral seat wherein at least one peripheral weather strip is arranged, and a second sheet of fluorocarbon resin also having a low coefficient of sliding friction, and an upper steel plate located upon the second sheet of fluorocarbon resin. Fixed, unidirectional, and multidirectional horizontal displacement configurations are described.
Abstract: A safety ski binding is designed so that the ski boot resting on a plate joined permanently but pivotally to the ski is secured only by a single holding element, which is designed as a heel element. This holding element is joined to the ski so that it can be swivelled toward all sides, and has a release mechanism which releases the ski boot both in case of forward falls and in case of torsional falls. The release characteristic can be differently adjusted in different directions in accordance with the tensile and torsional stresses to which the leg is subjected.
