Abstract: A process for the manufacture of a nonwoven water blocking tape for use in cable manufacture, which process comprises the steps of:
(i) forming a coating of an aqueous solution of a water soluble polymer containing anionic groups and a multivalent ionic crosslinking agent on at least one surface of a nonwoven substrate material; and
(ii) drying and/or curing the coating in order to form a partially crosslinked water swellable polymer coating on the at least one surface of the nonwoven substrate material.
Water blocking tapes are also provided which comprise a nonwoven substrate material having a coating on at least one surface thereof of a water soluble polymer containing anionic groups which is partially crosslinked with a multivalent ionic crosslinking agent.

Abstract: HBV surface antigen particles, prepared by recombinant DNA technology are described, said particles being composed of epitopes from the group of surface peptides and/or core peptide of non-A, non-B hepatitis virus, hepatitis virus A and/or hepatitis virus B. Respective particles are especially characterized by a composition of different epitopes selected from pre-S and S peptides. There are also described DNA-sequences, plasmids and cell lines coding for respective HBV surface antigen particles as well as a new vaccine containing the same.
Abstract: It is known to isolate MHA from a reaction mixture obtained by the addition of hydrocyanic acid (HCN) to methyl mercaptopropionic aldehyde (MMP) and the hydrolysis of the methyl mercapto propionic aldehyde cyanohydrine (MMP-CH) obtained thereby with sulphuric acid, in which the reaction mixture is brought into contact with a substantially non-water-miscible organic solvent, in order to form an extraction solution having the solvent and MHA transferred from the reaction mixture, and the MHA is obtained as an extract from this extraction solution by concentration. The simplest and most economical process of the invention concerning the processing of the reaction product which facilitates the production of a highly concentrated product with an extremely low dimer, oligomer and by-product content, is characterised in that the concentration is conducted in such a way that the remaining extract contains less than 4 wt % and preferably less than 2 wt % of water.

Abstract: Biodegradable polymer networks are provided which are useful in a variety of dental and orthopedic applications. The biodegradable polymer networks can be formed in one embodiment by polymerizing anhydride prepolymers including crosslinkable groups, such as unsaturated moieties. The anhydride prepolymers can be crosslinked, for example in a photopolymerization reaction by irradiation of the prepolymer with light in the presence of a free radical initiator. Suitable anhydride prepolymers include dianhydrides of a dicarboxylic acid and a carboxylic acid molecule comprising a crosslinkable group. For example, methacrylic acid dianhydrides of monomers or oligomers of a diacid such as sebacic acid or 1,3-bis(p-carboxyphenoxy)-hexane can be used. The anhydride prepolymers can be applied in vivo to a site where an orthopedic implant is needed, and then may be crosslinked, for example, by irradiation with U.V. light, to form a biodegradable implant such as a rods, pin or plate.

Abstract: The present application relates to an extruded cosmetic composition, provided in the form of a soft paste, comprising, in a fatty phase, at least one compound having a high melting temperature. The invention also relates to a process for preparing the composition by extrusion.
Abstract: An antifoaming agent which comprises, as the main component, one or more polyglycerol fatty acid esters having a specific degree of polymerization of polyglycerol, specific fatty acid types and a specific saponification value, as well as a canned drink containing the same. The antifoaming agent exhibits an excellent antifoaming effect and solve the problem of blow-off and splash of canned drinks.
Abstract: This invention relates to a method using synthetic peptides as the solid phase immunoadsorbent for the detection and elicitation of antibodies to Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) gp120, and, in particular, antibodies having HIV neutralizing capabilities. The amino acid sequences of the peptides correspond to segments of the external envelope protein gp120 of HIV. These peptides have been found to be highly immunogenic, and are reactive with antibodies in sera of patients with AIDS, ARC or HIV infected individuals. They can also be used to elicit the production of neutralizing antibodies to HIV. More specifically, the present invention is directed to the use of a synthetic peptide selected from the groups consisting of peptides containing thirty-three amino acids in a prescribed sequence derived from the HIV-gp120 external protein, analogues, mixtures and poly-L-lysine polymers thereof, for the detection and elicitation of antibodies to HIV-gp120.
