Abstract: Multifunctional cyclobutarene peroxide polymerization initiators comprising at least one cyclobutarene moiety linked through the aromatic ring to at least one peroxide containing group which catalyze free radical polymerizations, as well as participate in cyclobutarene initiated ring opening polymerizations. The cyclobutarene peroxides of this invention are useful for the production of cross-linked, branched and graft polymeric compositions.

Abstract: What is described herein is an improved precipitation polymerization process and copolymer products produced thereby. The process herein is carried out by charging a reactor with a solvent in which the copolymer product is substantially insoluble over the entire compositional range of the copolymer, preferably heptane or cyclohexane, and a polymerization initiator, heating to 50.degree. to 150.degree. C., agitating, and then simultaneously feeding selected amounts of a vinyl lactam and a polymerizable carboxylic acid into said reactor below the surface of the solvent while continuing to agitate the mixture to precipitate the copolymer from solution as a fine, white powder, and recovering the copolymer of defined composition.

Abstract: An aromatic vinyl ether of the formula: ##STR1## wherein: R.sub.1, R.sub.2, R.sub.4, R.sub.5, R.sub.6, R.sub.8, R.sub.9, and R.sub.10 are independently selected from hydrogen, halogen, and C.sub.1 -C.sub.8 alkyl radicals;R.sub.3 and R.sub.7 are independently selected from C.sub.1 -C.sub.8 alkylene radicals; andR.sub.11 and R.sub.12 are independently selected from allyl and methallyl.Also disclosed are various other aromatic vinyl ether compounds, chain-extended derivatives thereof, and liquid vinyl ether blends, and a method of making the aromatic vinyl ether compounds at high yield. The aromatic vinyl ether compounds, chain-extended vinyl derivatives, and/or liquid vinyl ether blends of the invention may be employed as vinyl ether components together with cationic photoinitiators, to provide cationically polymerizable vinyl ether compositions having utility in applications such as coatings, adhesives, and sealants.

Abstract: The invention relates to alternating copolymers having the formula ##STR1## wherein one of R.sup.1, R.sup.2, and R.sup.3 in each repeating unit is hydrogen and the others of R.sup.1, R.sup.2, and R.sup.3 in each repeating unit are CN or COOR.sup.5, wherein R5 is C.sub.1 -C.sub.8 alkyl; and n is from 10 to 5,000. This invention further relates to a process for preparing such alternating copolymers by copolymerization of appropriate alkenyl isocyanates and electron deficient olefins.
Abstract: The present invention includes a composition of matter comprising a sulfide of a metal selected from Groups VIB, VIIB and VIII of the Periodic Tables, or mixtures thereof, and an aromatic, nitrogen-containing heterocyclic compound selected from the group consisting of tetrahydroquinoline, and the mono and diorgano substituted derivatives of tetrahydroquinoline. These compositions are useful as catalyst precursors. Indeed, upon heating at temperatures above 200.degree. C., the compounds are converted to active catalysts useful in polymerizing nitrogen-containing heterocyclic compounds.
