Abstract: One embodiment relates to a method of a single network device outside of a group of switches connecting via multiple connections to the group of switches. Multiple ports of the single network device are connected with ports of at least one switch within the group, and the connected ports on the at least one switch are mapped to different virtual local area networks configured in the group of switches. A path from each of the connected ports on the at least one switch are replicated through the group of switches. Other embodiments are also disclosed.

Abstract: A method and a device are disclosed for processing data packets which comprise real-time data packets. The data packets are classified first by a co-processor unit into at least one first data packet type comprising real-time data packets, and a second data packet type. The data packets of the first data packet type are processed via a first data path with a further co-processor unit while the data packets of the second data packet type are processed via a second data path which comprises a main processor unit. Thus real-time data packets are processed without using the main processor unit.

Abstract: According to the invention an embodiment, a network node for communicating using a MAC address is disclosed. The network node includes a point-to-point interface, a bridge and a MAC address register. The point-to-point interface uses a first protocol. The bridge is coupled to the point-to-point interface and provides a fixed route for the Ethernet interface. The first protocol encapsulates the data of a second protocol. The MAC address register stores the MAC address for the second protocol, were the MAC address is dynamically determined in the field and written to the MAC address register. The MAC address is used when communicating with the network node through the point-to-point interface.
Abstract: Bulk information is transferred to nodes in a communication network having a plurality of widely dispersed nodes. The information can be an image, content, or configuration information. The information is uni-cast to a selection of nodes by a central node or server, to seed the information at certain nodes in the network. The information is then distributed by these seed nodes to every other node in the network. A first algorithm selects which nodes should be seeded with information by the central node. A second algorithm distributes information in the network on a query basis.

Abstract: A mechanism is disclosed that enables layer two host addresses (e.g. a MAC addresses) to be shielded from a network. In one implementation, the mechanism updates each packet sent by the hosts into the network to indicate that the source layer two (L2) address for that packet is a shared L2 address instead of the actual L2 address of the sending host. By doing so, the mechanism exposes only the shared L2 address to the network, and shields the actual L2 addresses of the hosts from the network. The effect of this is that the switches in the network will need to store only the shared L2 address in their forwarding tables, not the actual L2 addresses of the hosts. By reducing the number of L2 addresses that need to be stored in the forwarding tables of the switches, the mechanism improves the scalability of the network.
Abstract: Methods and systems are described for providing address information for nodes when multiple possibilities exist. For example, in a TISPAN environment the described techniques can be used to transmit address information to an SPDF when it needs to determine which of multiple A-RACFs associated with different IP domains that the SPDF needs to communicate with.
Abstract: Provided is a method and apparatus for reserving a session resource in an IPv4/IPv6 combination network system. It allows a node to simultaneously establish an end-to-end session and a tunnel session by notifying a starting node of the tunnel session in advance about whether a last node supports RSVP while assigning IPv4 address information to an IPv6 host according to DSTM upon reserving a resource according to an RSVP mechanism in a 4over6 dual stack transition mechanism (DSTM) environment.

Abstract: A network includes a plurality of network clusters. Each network cluster includes a plurality of nodes. At least one of the plurality of nodes includes a portal node. A portal node is a node with at least one link that crosses a boundary of the network cluster. Each portal node is configured to communicate detection packets for detecting the existence of other portal nodes within the network cluster. Each portal node is configured to communicate with nodes within the network cluster associated with the respective portal node to indicate that the respective portal node is a predetermined number of hops away from a virtual root bridge associated with the network cluster.

Abstract: A packet data system such as a TCP/IP network transmits packets containing a variety of data types along links in the network. Packets are transmitted in a stream between nodes interconnected by the links, which conform to a transport layer protocol such as TCP, UDP, and RSTP, and include wireless links, which transmit packets using a radio frequency (RF) medium. Typical protocols, however, are usually developed to optimize throughput and minimize data error and loss over wired links, and do not lend themselves well to a wireless link. By examining the data in a packet, performance characteristics such as a port number are determined. The performance characteristics indicate the application type, and therefore, the data type, of the packets carried on the connection.
Abstract: In a particular embodiment of the present invention, a forwarding node in an ad hoc network collects sets of node information pertaining to its neighbor nodes. An example of a type of node information is history information that indicates previous time periods during which a neighbor node has been available for communication. Other types of node information may include proximity information that indicates how far a neighbor node is from the forwarding node. In selecting a routing path, the forwarding node takes into account information collected in the sets of node information. A routing path can be selected to include a neighbor node having the highest probability to be available for communication. Additionally or alternatively, a routing path may be selected to minimize the power transmission level required for the forwarding node to forward data packets.
Abstract: An apparatus and method for connecting a plurality of computing devices, e.g. web servers, database servers, etc., to a plurality of storage devices, such as disks, disk arrays, tapes, etc., by using a stream-oriented (circuit oriented) switch that has high throughput, but that requires non-negligible time for reconfiguration is disclosed. An example of such stream-oriented switch is an optical switch. The system decodes the requests from the computing devices and uses this information to create circuits, e.g. optical paths in embodiments where the stream-oriented switch is an optical switch, through the stream-oriented switch. The system uses these circuits to route traffic between the computing devices and the storage devices. Buffering of data and control in the device memory is used to improve overall throughput and reduce the time spent on reconfigurations.
Abstract: A computer apparatus provides support multiple virtual computing machines. In accordance with one embodiment, the computer apparatus includes a platform manager, a virtual machine manager (VMM) driver of the platform manager, a TCP/IP stack of the platform manager, a guest operating system supported by the platform manager, and a TCP offload pseudo driver module of the guest operating system. The VMM driver is configured to transfer data between a top of the TCP/IP stack and the TCP offload pseudo driver module without changing a level of abstraction of the data. In accordance with another embodiment, the VMM driver is configured to transfer data between a top of a SCSI services stack and a SCSI offload pseudo driver module without changing a level of abstraction of the data. Abstract: A method and apparatus of protecting a first network from unauthorized access includes storing profile information for each call session, and determining if an unauthorized access of the first network is occurring based on the profile information. The profile information includes a predetermined threshold indicating a maximum acceptable rate of incoming data units from an external network to the first network. If the incoming data unit rate exceeds the predetermined threshold, then a security action is taken, such as generating an alarm or preventing further transport of data units from the external network to the first network.
