  • Patent number: 6569289
Abstract: Chemical pulp is produced from a slurry of comminuted cellulosic fibrous material using a beneficial additive such as AQ, or polysulfide. In the first treatment zone the effective alkali concentration and temperature conditions are such so that substantially no alkali degradation of the cellulose occurs, but so that the material is effectively impregnated with the additive. Then the material is treated with an alkaline cooking liquor, at cooking temperature, to produce a chemical cellulose pulp with higher yield or strength than if the low temperature, low alkali, additive pretreatment was not practiced. Typical alkali and temperature conditions in the first zone are less than 10 g/l expressed as NaOH; and between about 80-130° C., e.g. about 80-110° C. The first zone is preferably a feed system (which may include a separate impregnation vessel) for a continuous digester, while cooking is in a continuous digester.

  • Patent number: 4331511
Abstract: A paper making machine foil is provided with one or more of the following: a narrow angle (from 14.degree. to 23.degree.) forwardly projecting doctoring nose providing a water skimming edge, a layer of wear resisting material spaced rearwardly from the skimming edge and a wear resisting facing on and along an under surface of the nose and providing a self-sharpening water stripping tip for the skimming edge, and a metal (stainless steel) body provided with a downwardly opening recess within which is mounted a mounting member (rigid plastic) having a downwardly opening shaped groove receptive of a sliding connection for mounting the foil in a paper making machine.

  • Patent number: 4330947
Abstract: An apparatus for aiding water removal from a moving paper web directs steam to a portion of the web and controls the distribution of steam in both the cross-machine and the machine direction of the web. In the preferred embodiment, a matrix of compartments is used to supply steam to the web, and the steam supply to each compartment is independently controlled.

  • Patent number: 4331510
Abstract: A steam shower for reducing paper web moisture content variability in the cross machine direction is described. The local dewatering effect of the shower on the moving supported web is controlled by varying its bottom steam discharge area incrementally across the width of the web. In one embodiment the hood is divided across the width of the machine into compartments, each having at least one cross machine direction wall whose bottom edge may be adjusted relative to the rear wall of the hood. A second embodiment has a pleated curtain whose bottom edge is controlled by lever arms with respect to the hood's rear wall. Local adjustments are made based on a comparison of moisture measurements at the finished product reel with the desired level.

  • Patent number: 4330565
Abstract: A process for producing concentrated fruit extracts from raw fruit is described. The raw fruit, which may be whole or chopped into bits and at various states of ripeness, is mixed with water and the wetted fruit placed in a pressurized heating container such as an autoclave, where the fruit is heated at a predetermined temperature and pressurized at a predetermined pressure for a predetermined period of time so as to extract the fruit. The extracted fruit is then fed to a separator device which separates the extract from the fruit residue. The extract is then concentrated under vacuum to provide a concentrated fruit extract while the residue is discarded.

  • Patent number: 4330023
Abstract: A press section for extracting water from a continuous traveling web in which the web is sandwiched between a traveling belt and a drum. The belt is wrapped partially about the drum and a pressure shoe exerts pressure on the belt in the wrap area to press the web. The laterally outer ends of the drum are relieved to provide a reduced diameter portion in the areas extending laterally outwardly of the pressure shoe.

  • Patent number: 4325783
Abstract: The adverse effects of dissolved organic material in the aqueous phase of pulp suspensions during bleaching using mixtures of chlorine dioxide and chlorine are overcome by applying the chlorine dioxide and chlorine serially to the pulp in two steps without an intermediate wash. An aqueous solution of chlorine dioxide and chlorine in which the chlorine constitutes from about 6 to about 10% of the total available chlorine of the solution is used in the first step and chlorine is used in the second step. The aqueous solutions are formed by dissolving in water chlorine dioxide and chlorine formed in a chlorine dioxide generator.

  • Patent number: 4320153
Abstract: An improved method for producing refrigerated flesh of fish, which comprises mixing ground fish flesh with (1) a powdery or granular solid colloid composed of 70 to 99% by weight of a crystallized and stabilized solid sugar alcohol such as sorbitol and 30 to 1% by weight of fine particles of an oil or fat such as colza oil dispersed in the sugar alcohol and (2) a powdery or granular polyphosphate, and refrigerating the mixture. The amounts of additives (1) and (2) are 1 to 10%, and 0.1 to 0.5%, respectively, based on the weight of the ground flesh. Pastes (such as "kamaboko") of seafood prepared from the refrigerated fish have better whiteness and elasticity than conventional products.
