  • Patent number: 6279231
Abstract: A method for securing the outer ring of the bearing in a runner shell wherein the radius of an edge defining the seat for the bearing varies in a predetermined manner around its circumference, the steps comprising, positioning an outer ring of the bearing in the seat of the runner shell so that the edge of the runner shell overlies a circumferentially extending seating groove in the outer ring, placing a die having a forming face in engagement with the peripheral edge of the runner shell, and deforming by means of a die, the edge of the runner shell seat in a manner to displace essentially the same material around the circumference of the edge into the bearing groove, thereby producing a generally uniform force on the bearing ring around the circumference of the ring which eliminates distortion thereof.

  • Patent number: 6272750
Abstract: A machine tool comprising a base, with a guide surface, a workpiece holder on the base, a movable tool carriage, and a motor for advancing the carriage along the guide surfaces toward the workpiece. Hydrostatic bearings are situated in the carriage for discharging fluid, such as oil, into the narrow gap defined between the carriage and the guide surface. A pre-load rail is secured to the movable carriage, and a plurality of pockets are defined in the pre-load rail. A hydrostatic pre-load piston, with an enlarged head and a depending base, is located in each pocket. A shallow depression is formed in the face of each piston, and an annular wall surrounds the depression, so that the piston restores itself to an equilibrium condition. The pre-load pistons are located in opposition to the hydrostatic bearings. An O-ring encircles the base of the piston, and allows floating, and tilting, movement of the piston within the pocket, while serving as a seal for the pocket.

  • Patent number: 6226846
Abstract: This invention is directed to a pusher tool for pushing a member out of passageway. In particular, the pusher tool is for pushing a grease cup in the passageway of a yoke in a universal joint. Wherein the grease cup for holding grease and bearings becomes frozen in the passageway in the yoke, it may be very difficult to remove the grease cup from the passageway. A housing can be attached to the yoke. In the housing, there is a plunger which can be moved in the passageway in the yoke. Grease is applied to the interior of the housing and the back of the plunger for moving the plunger against the grease cup. Sufficient pressure can be exerted on the grease to force the grease cup out of the passageway in the yoke.

  • Patent number: 6212774
Abstract: A bicycle bearing assembly has a spindle rotatably coupled within an outer tubular member via bearing members. The spindle preferably has a pair of annular grooves, which are formed in its outer surface by cold rolling the spindle. Similarly, the tubular outer member is cold rolled to form a pair of corresponding annular grooves in its internal surface. The cold rolling process of forming the tubular outer member results in its external surface also deformed to create a similar corresponding profile to the internal surface. This cold rolling creates a very smooth bearing surface for the bearing members. In one embodiment, the bicycle bearing assembly is a bottom bracket for a bicycle. In other embodiments, the bicycle bearing assembly is a hub for a wheel bicycle. The hub can be either a front hub or a rear hub.

  • Patent number: 6202304
Abstract: A movable sheet overlying a wing is disclosed that creates laminar flow over its exposed surface. The movable sheet serves as an integral, retractable shield for protecting a suction support structure of a wing against contamination, and also serves as a movable, conductive substrate for deicing by means of electrical resistance or hot-gas heating. The invention includes a movable sheet that is mounted scroll-like on two motor-driven rollers. The sheet has a solid area without perforations that protects the suction support structure from contamination, and a porous area with perforations therethrough that allows boundary layer suction. The motor-driven rollers scroll the sheet to cover the suction support structure with either the solid area or the perforations of the sheet. Contact rollers at the edge of the sheet supply electrical current to resistively heat the sheet and melt any accumulated ice. The movable sheet can also be moved back and forth to dislodge the ice.
