Patent number: 4318307Abstract: A brake operating device for a bicycle has a bracket which carries a control lever pivoted thereto and is adjustable mounted to a fixed member fixed to a handle bar of the bicycle. Structures are provided to enable the bracket position to be changed with respect to the fixed member to adjust the distance between the grip of the control lever and the handle bar without changing the relative position of an outer sheath of a control cable supported at the bracket with respect to a control wire of a control cable supported at the control lever.Type: GrantFiled: April 3, 1979Date of Patent: March 9, 1982Assignee: Shimano Industrial Company LimitedInventor: Masayoshi Kine

Patent number: 4299319Abstract: A two-speed clutch in which an input rotary drive is transmitted to an output rotary member to produce a high speed direct drive in which the output rotary member is driven at the same speed as the input member, or to produce a reduced output speed. The input member comprises an inner drum driven by centrifugally actuated clutch shoes in turn driven by an input shaft. A second set of clutch shoes is interposed between the inner drum and the output member consisting of an outer drum, which clutch shoes are designed to be centrifugally disengaged to produce a controlled slip between the inner and outer drums to reduce the output speed. In the high speed mode, the inner and outer drums are latched together to rotate at the same speed by a pivotally mounted latch mounted on the outer drum and an expanding spring element mounted to the inner drum, with engagement between the latch and expanding spring taking place at a predetermined rate of rotation of the inner drum to establish high speed drive.Type: GrantFiled: September 4, 1979Date of Patent: November 10, 1981Assignee: General Electric CompanyInventor: John Bochan

Patent number: 4297907Abstract: In a gear drive for drivingly connecting two rotatable shafts the transmitted power and torque is split between two parallel paths to reduce the size and required power handling capacity of the gears and other components. The power and torque is divided between the two paths by an axially shiftable torque distributing member carrying two gears each meshing with a respective one of two other gears each comprising part of a respective one of the two parallel power paths. The torque distributing member is rotatably supported relative to the frame or casing of the drive by a bearing surrounding and engaging the member itself. This accurately locates and fixes the axis of rotation of the member and reduces the bearing requirements for its associated shaft.Type: GrantFiled: June 1, 1979Date of Patent: November 3, 1981Assignee: Kaman Aerospace CorporationInventors: Robert B. Bossler, Jr., Charles P. Hardersen

Patent number: 4290321Abstract: A limited slip differential includes a mechanism for producing a varied bias ratio as a result of changes in side gear torque. An annular drive flange is biased toward frictional locking means within the differential case to provide biasing as required. The flange contains a first cam surface mateable with a second cam surface disposed on the back face of one of the side gears. Either the first or second cam includes a variable pressure angle, whereby a varied biasing force is developed on the drive flange as the side gear moves relative to the flange via changes in side gear toque.Type: GrantFiled: June 25, 1979Date of Patent: September 22, 1981Inventor: Denney R. Wilson

Patent number: 4284118Abstract: A folding door, of the kind composed by an array of wooden slats connected by intermediate hinge elements; the intermediate hinge elements are of wood, preferably of the same color and grain of the wood the slats are made of, and a metallic hinge element is hidden within the strips of wood interposed between any two wooden slats so that the external appearance is that of an all-wooden assembly both when the door is outstretched and when it is folded.Type: GrantFiled: August 14, 1979Date of Patent: August 18, 1981Inventor: Sergio Ceron

Patent number: 4284409Abstract: Replaceable pulley lagging--for an initially smooth-faced, endless conveyor or elevator belt drive pulley--comprising a multiplicity of relatively narrow, transversely extending traction pads pre-formed to mate with the arcuate pulley face, and applied edge to edge in a circumferential array and number to substantially fully embrace the face of the pulley; the traction pads being secured to the face of the pulley in detachable relation whereby to permit removal and replacement of said pads when worn or damaged.Type: GrantFiled: August 27, 1979Date of Patent: August 18, 1981Assignee: RandtronInventor: David A. Patent number: 4282767Abstract: A reduction gear comprises a parallelepiped-shaped casing containing a double worm input shaft engaging with two pinions. The input shaft has its worm portions of equal pitch magnitude but of opposite hand and the engaging pinions are one on each side of the shaft. Alternative positions are provided for the two pinions to enable the direction of rotation of the output shaft to be reversed. Each pinion carries an integral spur gear engaging a common ring gear on which the output shaft is carried. There is a square cover to the casing of the reduction gear and this cover has three bosses for use in mounting the reduction gear on a support frame.Type: GrantFiled: July 2, 1979Date of Patent: August 11, 1981Assignee: Societe pour l'Equipement de VehiculesInventor: Roland R. Patent number: 4277985Abstract: A spacer is used to set the running clearance between parts in a power transmitting device. The power transmitting device contains a housing, a shaft rotatably mounted in the housing and a ring gear mounted on the shaft for rotation therewith. The ring gear is capable of deflecting in an axial direction under load. A stop member, fixed to the housing, is positioned to have one end adjacent one side of the ring gear. The stop member is installed to be in abutting contact with the ring gear. The spacer is formed of a material capable of wearing away when contacted by the rotating ring gear to produce a gap of a predetermined thickness between one end of the stop member and the ring gear. The one end of the stop member will prevent the ring gear from deflecting axially under load a distance greater than the predetermined distance.Type: GrantFiled: September 27, 1979Date of Patent: July 14, 1981Assignee: Rockwell International CorporationInventors: Edward M. Kostello, Kenneth L. Schulte, Jr.

Patent number: 4271717Abstract: An axle assembly with crown-wheel and pinion gearing and lubrication of the pinion bearings by two passages having entrances disposed close to the periphery of a rotary element, to remove lubricant from a film entrained by the element from a supply of lubricant in the bottom of the housing in the gearing, the passages directing lubricant to a chamber and then to the bearings with one or other passage effective despite changed orientation or direction of operation of the assembly.Type: GrantFiled: July 10, 1979Date of Patent: June 9, 1981Assignee: GKN Axles LimitedInventors: Thomas H. Millward, David G. Wylie, Philip C. Clarke

Patent number: 4271724Abstract: Disclosed is a power shift transmission having torque converter, an input shaft driven by the torque converter, a countershaft in continuous driving relation with the input shaft, an output shaft having first, second, and third speed ratios journaled thereon and driven via the countershaft, a reverse speed ratio gear splined to the output shaft and driven via a gear on an idler shaft driven by the countershaft, a first friction clutch mechanism for connecting the first speed ratio gear to the output shaft, a second friction clutch mechanism for connecting the output shaft directly to the input shaft, a blocker-clutch assembly for coupling the second and third speed ratio gears to the output shaft, and an actuator assembly for shifting the blocker-clutch assembly into and out of coupling engagement. The friction clutches are momentarily engageable to relieve driving and coast mode torque on the blocker-clutch and to synchronize the blocker-clutch.Type: GrantFiled: December 26, 1978Date of Patent: June 9, 1981Assignee: Eaton CorporationInventor: Timothy J.
