Patent number: 4564242Abstract: A wheel hub assembly includes an internally ventilated brake disc. The brake disc is mounted on a flange-like extension of the inner bearing ring of the assembly. Slots are formed in the flange-like extension and the brake disc acts as a cover over the slots forming cooling channels extending radially outwardly in the wheel hub assembly to the cooling apertures in the radially outer part of the brake disc. A heat insulated cover disc can be positioned between the brake disc and the slots in the flange-like extension.Type: GrantFiled: October 26, 1983Date of Patent: January 14, 1986Assignee: Uni-Cardan AktiengesellschaftInventors: Werner Krude, Alfons Jordan

Patent number: 4563042Abstract: A covering ring for a vehicle wheel. The bead seating surfaces of a tire are mounted on the radially inner periphery of the rim. In order to prevent dirt and/or water from entering the space between the tire bead and the rim well, the covering ring has a width which covers the space between the tire bead, that portion of the rim which extends axially outwardly from the rim well, and the rim well. Also, provision is made that the radially inner surface of the covering ring, when viewed in the transverse direction, extends horizontally or is laterally inclined toward the outside. Also, provision is made that the radially inner diameter of the covering ring at no point of the space, which is to be covered, be greater than the radially inner diameter of the mounted tire in the bead region.Type: GrantFiled: October 7, 1983Date of Patent: January 7, 1986Assignee: Continental Gummi-Werke AktiengesellschaftInventors: Hans Seitz, Udo Frerichs, Heinz-Dieter Rach, Siegmund Spendel

Patent number: 4546807Abstract: A spare tire is provided for passenger autos to replace the usual fifth pneumatic tire and wheel assembly supplied as original equipment with autos. The tire includes a metal hub having an annular bulge to provide clearance for the brake calipers of an auto equipped with the tire. A series of rim segment assemblies with tread rubber thereon is mounted on the periphery of the hub member forming the tire rim. Each segment has a T-shaped metal member the T-stem of which is generally trapezoidal in shape and is vulcanized-bonded to a rubber block similar in shape which has an opposite surface vulcanized-bonded to a thin sheet metal segment. Each rim segment assembly is separately connected by suitable means to the hub member. A protective device guarding against tire collapse in event of failure of a bond between the rubber block and a metal member, engages the T-stem and hub member.Type: GrantFiled: February 16, 1984Date of Patent: October 15, 1985Assignee: Teledyne Industries Inc.Inventors: William T. Cummins, Wallace A. Lobdell

Patent number: 4543888Abstract: A convertible railway hopper car has parallel longitudinal beams defining the sides of a hatchway for filling the car with granular material from a spout, and hinged on the upper margins of the car sidewalls are cargo cover members which may occupy elevated positions in which they form a roof covering the entire car body except the hatchway, or idle positions hanging inside the car body. Hinged hatch elements are mounted on the cargo cover members at one side of the hatchway and are movable between extended positions closing the hatchway and secured to the cargo cover members at the other side of the hatchway, and open positions lying atop the cargo cover members upon which they are mounted. When the cargo cover members are in idle position the hatch elements hang below them.Type: GrantFiled: June 29, 1983Date of Patent: October 1, 1985Assignee: Modine Manufacturing CompanyInventor: Richard P. Bessette

Patent number: 4533183Abstract: A mechanism for protecting the tires of military vehicles from destruction y enemy small arms fire. The mechanism includes a plate or disk of armor material radiating from the vehicle wheel to a point slightly less than the expected radial deformation of the tire so that the disk is prevented from impacting against the terrain during severe jounce motions of the tire. As an auxiliary feature, a series of paddles can be retractably mounted on each disk for extension from the disk preferably when it is desired to operate the vehicle in mud, sand, or other soft terrains. The paddles tractively engaged the terrain to prevent wheel spin.Type: GrantFiled: September 19, 1983Date of Patent: August 6, 1985Assignee: The United States of America as represented by the Secretary of the ArmyInventor: Lawrence A.
