  • Patent number: 6017336
Abstract: An absorbent article includes a pair compression resistant containment barriers which are configured to inhibit the lateral flow of fecal exudates along the surface of the absorbent article. The containment barriers are laterally spaced apart to provide a void space between the wearer's buttocks and the surface of the absorbent article for containing body exudates. Each containment barrier defines a width to height ratio of at least about 0.5 and a compression resistance of at least about 50 percent. The absorbent article may also include a containment dam which is located on the bodyfacing surface of the absorbent article and which is configured to inhibit a longitudinal flow of fecal exudates along the surface of the absorbent article. In a particular embodiment, the containment barriers are located between the topsheet layer and absorbent body of the absorbent article.

  • Patent number: 6013065
Abstract: An absorbent article incorporating a main body which has a waist hole and a pair of leg holes, and comprises a topsheet positioned in a facing relation to a wearer's body, a backsheet positioned opposite thereto, and an absorbent core interposed between the backsheet and the topsheet. The topsheet is a composite which comprises two layers of sheet material and two elastic members sandwiched between the two sheets of material. The topsheet further has communicating means disposed in a crotch region of the absorbent article for receiving body exudates. The communicating means is surrounded by the elastic members which form leg gathers, and serves as a passage to communicate body exudates to a space defined between the topsheet and the backsheet. The absorbent article of the present invention can provide excellent flexibility, a snug fit and comfort to a wearer during use, while effectively preventing leakage from the leg gathers.

  • Patent number: 5968027
Abstract: The absorbent structure of the invention has a substantially continuous absorbent web having an absorbent layer and a transfer layer. The transfer layer includes a nonabsorbent material and is capable of transferring liquids which it receives to the absorbent layer. The first and second edges of the absorbent web are coiled to form side walls, and the side walls form a trough therebetween. The top, trough-containing surface provides a natural trough in the space between the side walls for receiving and holding large gushes of body fluid until they can be absorbed by or dispersed into the rest of the structure.
