Patent number: 5628749Abstract: A method of preparing a patient's proximal tibia with a surgical saw and cutting instrumentation is disclosed. The method of the present invention prepares the patient's proximal tibial to receive a tibial implant. The patient's intramedullary canal is first reamed and then an intramedullary rod is placed in the intramedullary canal as a reference. A first cutting instrument is bound on the rod above the patient's proximal tibia. The first cutting instrument includes a stylus that is used to set the depth of cut by referencing the top of the proximal tibia. The proximal tibia is then transversely cut with the saw by tracking the first cutting guide surfaces with the saw. The first cutting instrument is removed together with its stylus. A secondary cutting instrument is then placed on the rod above the proximal tibia. The second cutting instrument has a cutter at its center for cutting longitudinally into the proximal tibia.Type: GrantFiled: June 7, 1995Date of Patent: May 13, 1997Assignee: Smith & Nephew Richards Inc.Inventors: Tim Vendrely, Leo A. Patent number: 5628780Abstract: A suture sleeve for anchoring the lead body of an implantable medical device is fabricated of a biocompatible, polymeric material to which has been added color pigment in clear contrast with the bodily tissue adjacent the sleeve. The sleeve is therefore readily visible to the naked eye to aid the physician in locating the sleeve during lead implant or lead revision. Furthermore, the tubular body may be radiopaque and, therefore, easily seen on a fluoroscope through the addition of a radiologically dense material, such as tantalum powder, to the plastic from which the sleeve is molded.Type: GrantFiled: February 13, 1995Date of Patent: May 13, 1997Assignee: Pacesetter, Inc.Inventors: John R. Patent number: 5626615Abstract: An improved chiropractic adjusting instrument is provided for use in spinal manipulative therapy and for exciting a human spine at its natural frequency. The chiropractic adjusting instrument includes a thrust element for delivering an input force, a body contact member removably attached to the thrust element, a spring means for propelling the thrust element and the body contact member outwardly, and an adjustment knob arranged on the thrust element for adjusting the amount of potential energy imposed on the spring means and for controlling the magnitude of the resulting input force. In use, the input force is mechanically tuned to a desired frequency (e.g., the natural frequency of a human spine) by positioning a shaped mass on the thrust element. By mechanically tuning the chiropractic adjusting instrument in this way, the dynamic output response of the spine is maximized while the requisite impact force is minimized.Type: GrantFiled: August 15, 1995Date of Patent: May 6, 1997Assignee: Activator Methods, Inc.Inventors: Tony S. Patent number: 5626580Abstract: A modular intramedullary nail includes three connectable sections that are connectable end to end. The three sections include an upper proximal nail component, a lower distal nail component, and a central nail component. The nail components are connected and the end using corresponding frustroconical socket and frustroconical projecting end portions of adjoining end nail components that can be fitted together with a taper lock or morse taper connection and secured tightly together upon impact. Upon assembly, the connections are self orienting, providing corresponding key and slot portions adjacent the respective frustroconical socket and frustroconical projecting end portions of the nail components. The interlocking keys and slot align and abut upon assembly so that the adjoining nail components only align in one relative rotational position.Type: GrantFiled: July 15, 1994Date of Patent: May 6, 1997Inventor: Robert Brosnahan

Patent number: 5626590Abstract: A laparoscopic suturing method comprises the steps of (a) disposing a laparoscopic cannula in an abdominal wall of the patient, (b) moving a first end section of a suture through the laparoscopic cannula and into an abdominal cavity of the patient so that a second end section of the suture remains outside the patient, (c) passing the first end section of the suture through organic abdominal tissues of a patient, and (d) drawing the first end section of the suture back out through the laparoscopic cannula upon passing of the suture through the abdominal tissues of the patient. Upon drawing of the first end section of the suture out of the patient, a suture locking device is slid along the suture end sections and through the laparoscopic cannula until the locking device is substantially juxtaposed to the organic tissues at the opening. Then, the suture end sections are severed on a side of the locking device opposite the abdominal tissues and the opening.Type: GrantFiled: February 21, 1995Date of Patent: May 6, 1997Inventor: Peter J. Patent number: 5624461Abstract: This is an implantable vaso-occlusive device. It is a complex, helically wound coil comprised of a primary helically wound coil which is then wound into a specific secondary shape. The final shape upon deployment is in the approximate shape of an anatomical cavity. upon deployment, the device first fills the periphery of the cavity and then continues to infill the center. The device is a self-forming shape made from a pre-formed linear helically wound. Fibers may be introduced onto the device and affixed to the pre-formed linear member. The constituent member may be also be covered with a fibrous braid. The device is typically introduced through a catheter. The device is passed axially through the catheter sheath and assumes its form upon exiting the catheter without further action. The invention also includes methods of winding the vaso-occlusive device into appropriately shaped forms and annealing them.Type: GrantFiled: June 6, 1995Date of Patent: April 29, 1997Assignee: Target Therapeutics, Inc.Inventor: Michael J. Patent number: 5624456Abstract: A surgical device for cutting substantially across a cornea of an eye of a patient, the device including a positioning ring structured to be temporarily attached to a portion of the eye surrounding the cornea to be cut, and defining an aperture sized to receive and expose the cornea to be cut. The surgical device further includes a cutting head assembly structured to be guided and driven over an upper surface of the positioning ring in a generally arcuate path, and having a cutting element positioned therein and structured to oscillate laterally to facilitate smooth and effective cutting of the cornea. The cutting head assembly is structured to be detachably coupled to the positioning ring by a coupling member which permits movement of the cutting head assembly relative to the positioning ring along the generally arcuate path, but maintains sufficient engagement therebetween to ensure that smooth, steady, driven movement is maintained.Type: GrantFiled: February 7, 1996Date of Patent: April 29, 1997Inventor: Johann F.
