  • Patent number: 7978766
Abstract: A method of encoding moving pictures using a plurality of quantization matrices. The method involves selecting one of the plurality of quantization matrices in consideration of an at least one characteristics of an input image; transforming the input image; and quantizing the transformed input image using the selected quantization matr ix.

  • Patent number: 7362948
Abstract: When execution of copying of video and audio from a DVD from a videotape is instructed, a video copying apparatus 1 detects the remaining amount of the videotape set in a apparatus and reproduction time of video and audio copied to the videotape and based on these, it is determined whether the video and audio are recorded on the videotape in a standard mode or a longer-recording mode. Also, when execution of copying of video and audio from a videotape from a DVD is instructed, free space of the DVD and reproduction time of video and audio copied to the DVD are detected and based on these, a compression ratio of the video and audio recorded on the DVD is determined.

  • Patent number: 6236853
Abstract: The present invention relates generally to the problem of providing information about a called subscriber's status in a mobile communications system, and more particularly to the problem that occurs when a caller is unable to determine whether the subscriber being called is either out of the service area or has merely switched off his mobile phone. A new parameter MSSTATUS is given which will indicate the status of a Mobile Station as ready to receive a call, MSSTATUS=ZOK, powered off as in an IMSI detach, MSSTATUS=ZIMSIDETACH, or out of the coverage area, MSSTATUS=ZIMPLICITDETACH. A message will then be given to the caller which may provide a more detailed description of the status of the subscriber being called.

  • Patent number: 6233431
Abstract: The present invention relates to a radio receiver for receiving a radio signal, a first circuit for beating the signal to zero intermediate frequency in phase and quadrature shifted signals, a circuit for amplifying the in phase and quadrature shifted zero intermediate frequency signals, a second circuit for beating the amplified intermediate frequency signals to predetermined non-zero intermediate frequency in phase and quadrature shifted signals, a summer for summing the non-zero signals, and a circuit for applying the summed signals to a discriminator to obtain an output signal. Other embodiments are extended POCSAG for enhanced battery saving, paging sequence numbers for reception integrity control, digital AFC, script control of the pager for organizer/schedule applications, a vibrator holster for improved pager format and saving of battery power, intelligent low battery detection, and features arising from electronic on/off function.

  • Patent number: 6223039
Abstract: The MIN, but not the ESN, associated with a mobile station is entered into a permanent subscriber record associated with a private wireless communications system. During at least the initial registration attempt for the mobile station in the private system, the mobile station sends its MIN and ESN to the private system. The private system then asks a public wireless communications system for verification of the subscription status of the mobile station. If the status is favorable, e.g., the mobile station has a valid subscription to the public system, the private system updates its permanent subscriber record to include the ESN and continues with the registration process. If the verification response indicates an unfavorable subscription status, e.g., the ESN/MIN combination is invalid, the private system preferably refuses to allow the mobile station to register.

  • Patent number: 5950127
Abstract: The ground base station informs an in-level for the ground system, an out-level from the ground system, a timer value and an edge information indicating the edge of the service area, in addition to the broadcast information. It assumes that the mobile station MS moves from position 31 to zone 26 at the edge in the service area, and then moves to position 33. At the position 31, when the received field strength of the ground system decreases, the edge information is not detected, so that the mobile station MS does not switch the communication mode to the satellite system immediately by setting the timer value to three minutes. At position 32, the edge information is detected, so that the mobile station MS sets the timer value to one minute, and sets the out-level to a lower value than the general value. When the field strength is equal to or less than the out-level even after the passage of one minute, the mobile station MS switches the communication mode to the satellite system.
