  • Patent number: 5200121
Abstract: In the process described, a limited number of shaping tools (T.sub.1, T.sub.2, . . . , T.sub.N) having standardized parameters (for the production of the following contact lens parameters: contact lens diameter, radius of curvature of the rear face of the contact lens, vertex refraction) is used for the manufacture of standardized moulds (M.sub.1, M.sub.2, . . . , M.sub.N). Preferably by material-removing machining of the moulds, moulds are produced that have additional altered parameters. The multiplicity of moulds produced in that manner is used for the one-step manufacture (F) of contact lenses (L) having different parameters that largely do not have to be finished.

  • Patent number: 5188788
Abstract: A process for producing cellulose triacetate films that is capable of not only suppressing the growth of foreign matter on transport rollers, but also markedly reducing the necessary number of cleaning operations. The process includes steps of casting a solution of cellulose triacetate onto a support having it surface cooled at 20.degree. C. or below, drying and cooling the solution cast onto the support to solidify the cast solution, separating the subsequently solidified film from the support, and transporting the film while it dries on transport rollers. In accordance with the invention, for a weight proportion of the solvents in the film as separated from the support of at least 40 wt %, the surface of the transport rollers is made of a material having a surface energy of no more than 80 dynes/cm at 20.degree. • Patent number: 5188787
Abstract: This invention relates to an injection moulding process for the manufacture of multi-layered articles, especially articles having barrier properties. The process includes clamping a thermoplastic film over the cavity of a mould of an injection moulding process, the film being capable of being stretched. The film is then stretched within the mould by inserting the core of the mould, preferably using a core in which a central part enters the mould and partially stretches the film prior to the remainder of the core entering the mould. The mould is then closed, excess film is trimmed off and polymer is injected into the mould cavity. The resultant article is a multi-layered injection moulded article which, depending on the characteristics of the film and injected polymer, may have barrier properties to oxygen, liquids or the like that are superior to articles moulded from only the polymer. The process is particularly useful in the moulding of containers having a depth:width ratio of at least 0.5.

  • Patent number: 5181668
Abstract: An apparatus for inserting a coil of wire into a pipe which includes a rotatable drum for taking up a coil of spring wire, a guide for guiding the coil drawn from the rotatable drum, a push-pull device for applying external forces to the coil for feeding the coil into the pipe and retracting the coil out of the pipe, and a motor for rotating the guide and/or the drum. The drum and the guide are formed separately and are rotatable independently of each other, which rotation results in rotation of the coil of spring wire. The coil of wire has a rectangular or trapezoidal cross-section which enables the wire to effectively run through bends in the pipe without deforming or breaking.

  • Patent number: 5173234
Abstract: According to the invention, calibrated rings are obtained by superficially vulcanizing extruded or profiled extrudate at the exit of an extrusion head (T), then by cutting this vulcanized extrudate into portions by means of a conical cutting device (C), subsequently by butting the two ends, in the respective form of a conical tip and a funnel, of each portion (t) together under hot conditions and under a controlled pressure, in order to obtain a ring blank which is then engaged between the half-cavities of a mold (Mo), where it undergoes shaping and vulcanization by the heating of the latter and thereafter deburring as a result of a shearing action produced by a push device (D) causing the half-cavities to slide in the closed position in the frame of the mold, before causing the opening of the latter by means of a device (G) and the release of the calibrated and superficially clean ring obtained.

  • Patent number: 5169583
Abstract: A crystalline resin sheet having one, smooth surface and the other, roughened surface is produced by extruding a melt of the resin through a die to form a molten sheet, the molten sheet being subsequently contacted, at only one of the both surfaces thereof, with a cooled, smooth surface maintained at a temperature lower by 20.degree.-90.degree. C. than the melting point of the resin to solidify the molten sheet and to make the contacted surface of the sheet smooth. The other surface of the sheet which has not been contacted with a cooled surface becomes roughened because of the crystallization of the resin.

  • Patent number: 5169588
Abstract: A solvent based plastics recycling process directly reduces large volumes of post consumer plastic waste materials by up to 500% by volume. Minimal sorting and no cleaning is required, and large percentages of contaminants are tolerated. The process yields a highly adhesive resin which cures to a hard wood or masonry type material. The reduced end product, an epoxy sludge, may be formed to provide a lumber or brick substitute. Large percentages of shredded paper and other waste materials, including metals, may be added to the plastic waste materials, if desired.

  • Patent number: 5167894
Abstract: Apparatus for producing sheets or foils of plastic or rubber mixtures includes a calender having two rollers rotatably supported by spaced calender stands with a gap between the rollers and an extruder having an extruder head with wide mouth for extruding a sheet of material into the roller gap of the calender. One part of the extruder head is fixed while another part is pivoted for movement relative to the fixed part by a cylinder-piston unit. The calender is stationary while the extruder is mounted by screws, providing vertical adjustment, on a base having wheels for horizontal movement of the extruder toward and away from the calender to vary the distance between the extruder mouth and the roller gap of the calender. The base of the extruder is coupled with the calender by a threaded spindle rotatable through a reducing drive by a reversible motor to move the extruder toward and away from the calender.

  • Patent number: 5167781
Abstract: Continuous process and apparatus form products from thermoplastic materials between top and bottom mold carriages. A flexible silicone rubber mold adhered to a fiber belt continuously moves around each carriage frame. A surface of desired shape on one rubber mold mates with the desired shape of an opposed rubber mold surface forming a continuously moving mold channel into which is fed hot thermoplastic material at moldable temperature. After discharging the molded plastic product from the moving mold channel, localized surface heat in the molds resulting from contact with hot plastic is removed from the belt molds by blowing cold air onto mold surfaces. Each carriage frame includes a back-up plate coated with low friction coefficient material over which slides a continuously moving belt mold. These slippery plates have numerous air-bearing holes feeding high pressure air between them and the respective moving fiber belt for reducing friction and wear.
