Patent number: 4484412Abstract: A method and apparatus for cutting a hard and brittle material using a system for applying vibration in two directions with a strip-shaped flat cutting tool. The material to be cut is caused to make a reciprocating motion of a given stroke length together with a first small-amplitude, low frequency vibration in directions parallel to the reciprocating motion. Concurrently with this, a second small-amplitude vibration is applied also to the material to be cut in directions parallel to the cutting direction of the cutting tool into the material and in synchronism with the first small-amplitude vibration. Meanwhile, cutting pressure is applied to the cutting tool to a desired degree with a cutting fluid containing abrasive grain supplied to the cutting part of the material during the process of cutting.Type: GrantFiled: July 15, 1982Date of Patent: November 27, 1984Inventor: Ken-ichi Ishikawa

Patent number: 4481739Abstract: A grinding machine is provided wherein a pair of wheel slides are disposed respectively at both sides of a work support to be movable toward and away from the work table in a first direction. The wheel slides respectively carry turrets thereon in such a manner that each of the turrets is rotationally indexed about and slidable along an axis thereof extending in a second direction perpendicular to the first direction. Each of the turrets carries a plurality of grinding wheels which are rotatable about respective axes extending in the second direction, and when rotationally indexed selectively presents the grinding wheels to a machining station. The position of a selected one of the grinding wheels relative to a workpiece on the work support is adjusted in the first direction through the movement of each wheel slide and in the second direction through the movement of each turrets.Type: GrantFiled: September 21, 1982Date of Patent: November 13, 1984Assignee: Toyoda Koki Kabushiki KaishaInventors: Ikuo Suzuki, Kunihiko Unno, Norio Ohta

Patent number: 4480410Abstract: A center lapping apparatus for precisely lapping center holes in opposite ends of the workpiece prior to outside diameter grinding of the workpiece includes a conical lapping stone and a dressing apparatus that supports a dressing stone for periodically dressing the lapping stone. Movement of the dressing stone during any dressing operation is confined to a plane in which an axis of symmetry of the lapping stone lies. A spring loaded pin disposed in a movable head of the dressing apparatus has a slightly tapered end which precisely fits in a stationary hole of a mounting bracket about which the movable head pivots. The tapered end of the spring loaded pin ensures that the dressing stone can always be returned to precisely the same position for a dressing operation despite wear of the spring loaded pin. A precise flat surface of the moveable head slides against a precision flat surface of the stationary plate during pivoting of the movable head.Type: GrantFiled: September 15, 1982Date of Patent: November 6, 1984Assignee: Cen-T-Lap Corp.Inventors: Robbin Heimer, Thomas C. Patent number: 4476654Abstract: An apparatus is presented which will automatically lap involute and strai internal or external gear splines. Lapping force is applied alternatively to the left and right side of each tooth flank. Automatic indexing to new radial positions about the circumference of a gear after any preselected number of lapping cycles accomplishes the application of equal lapping forces to each tooth. The apparatus comprises a bed or support frame upon which is mounted a headstock assembly and a tailstock assembly. Mating workpieces, e.g., mating involute or straight internal or external gear splines, are fastened through collets to the mechanisms of the headstock and tailstock assemblies. The tailstock assembly includes a mainshaft attached to the collet holding its workpiece. The mainshaft is driven by a pneumatic piston to reciprocate along the axis of the workpiece causing the workpieces to lap one another.Type: GrantFiled: August 23, 1982Date of Patent: October 16, 1984Assignee: The United States of America as represented by the Secretary of the NavyInventors: Berwyn S.
