  • Patent number: 5373669
Abstract: A roofing assembly for shieldingly covering the planking of a flat roof. At least one water drainage outlet is provided about a portion of its surface. The roofing assembly comprises: (a) a thick, substantially flat insulating batt; (b) top waterproofing membranes, gravel layer and cardboard layer;, and bottom waterproofing membranes and gypsum layer, being respectively applied on top and bottom walls of the insulating batts; (c) a rigid, corrugated sheet member, applied directly under the bottom gypsum layer and supporting the insulating batt and destined to be applied directly against the roof planking. The corrugated sheet member is formed by a thin rigid sheet, this thin sheet undulating in a wave-like pattern along a lengthwise direction, whereby the corrugated sheet member has a depth formed by the transverse gap between a successive pair of trough and crest of the wave-like thin sheet.

  • Patent number: 5313750
Abstract: The grid member is formed of sheet metal and has an inverted T-shape with a bulb at the top, a double thickness central web and oppositely disposed flanges at the bottom. To achieve controlled expansion, an extended angular lance is cut at the top of the bulb. No metal is removed at this area of maximum bending stress. Further, staggered cutouts are placed in the two thicknesses which make up the web. By staggering the cutout areas of adjacent web layers, the overall web strength is maintained. These web cutouts and the lance at the top of the bulb cooperate upon thermal expansion, causing the bottom flanges to buckle down, and the web and bulb to separate laterally and fold. The folded web configuration directed by the staggered cutout pattern will maintain longitudinal rigidity.

  • Patent number: 5301483
Abstract: A composite, prestressed structural member, such as a bridge unit and methods of forming such a member. The apparatus includes a plurality of longitudinally extending girders which are transversely spaced and a plurality of adjacent composite units disposed on the girders. Each composite unit has a plurality of beams with a molded deck portion formed thereabove. The beams are positioned transversely with respect to the girders and attached thereto. Additional, longitudinal beams are disposed between the transversely extending beams over the girders. The longitudinal beams are attached to the girders and by connectors to the molded deck. The structure is formed by positioning the girders on a construction support adjacent to a center portion of the girders such that the free ends of the girders cantilever and deflect downwardly. The beams of the composite units are attached to the girders in this construction position. Any gaps between adjacent composite units are filled with a non-shrink, high strength grout.

  • Patent number: 5287669
Abstract: A roofing shingle is provided for shingling a roof with overlapped shingles, wherein the exposed portion of the shingle is selected to be of a height in the installed condition relative to the overall height of the shingle that enhances material utilization, to be at least approximately 44.4% efficient. This is accomplished by using an exposure height of 8 inches relative to an overall shingle height of 18 inches. The shingles are preferably constructed to have either 3 or 4 tabs, thereby having a ratio of exposure height to tab width of either 0.667 or 0.889, respectively. A larger exposure allows one to obtain 200 shingles for each 300 lineal feet of sheet shingle material, when the shingles have 18 inch overall height, and further allows an overall saving in the number of nails required to install a roof. The invention also contemplates variations in tab width within a given shingle and variations in number of tabs from about one to nine tabs in a given shingle.

  • Patent number: 5285614
Abstract: The present invention relates to a device for joining concrete pole sections. The joining or splicing device is a tapered sleeve which is cast integrally with an upper concrete pole section and placed over a lower pole section which is tapered to receive the sleeve. The wedging action of the tapered sleeve and pole and the gravity load of the upper pole section establish a tight connection between the sections sufficient to transfer loads imposed on the pole structure.

  • Patent number: 5282341
Abstract: A dynamic workspace module is provided for open plan spaces, and the like, and includes a compact footprint, comprising a freestanding framework supporting a three-sided partition to form an interior workspace and a portal opening for user ingress and egress. A door partition shaped to selectively close the portal opening is movably mounted on the framework. The door partition preferably has an arcuate plan shape, and is positioned adjacent one side of the portal opening, such that shifting the door partition from the fully open position to the fully closed position both increases the amount of the interior space in the workspace module, and alters the plan shape thereof for improved freedom of user movement, while alleviating any sense of user claustrophobia.
