    Abstract: Methods and apparatus for maintaining a compression force in a reactor pressure vessel (RPV) of a nuclear reactor are described. In one embodiment of the apparatus, a spring assembly facilitates applying compression force on the shroud head. The spring assembly, in one embodiment, includes two trusses and two torsion bars. The torsion bars extend between the trusses and are connected at opposite ends to the trusses. Each truss includes a truss support member, a hooking element, and a torsion converter element. The truss support member is configured to rest on the shroud head flange. The hooking element is pivotally coupled to the truss support member, and includes a hook adjacent a guide rod. The torsion converter element is coupled to the hooking element, and is vertically movable with respect to the truss support member. The converter element has two ends, each end splined to one of the torsion bars so that vertical movement of the converter element drives, e.g., rotates, the torsion bars.

    Abstract: A single trigger dual firing mechanism having dual sears and dual hammers provided. A pivoting connector link is mounted on a trigger with a horizontal pin. A selector bar causes the connector link to rotate to either engage the primary or secondary sear. Engagement of one sear locks the other sear and locks out the opposite hammer. When the selector turns and engages the primary sear then that sear is moved and the primary sear allows the primary hammer to fall. With the selector knob in the opposite position, the secondary sear is operated allowing the secondary hammer to move. The primary hammer is a swing type hammer. The secondary hammer is a piston type hammer. Both hammers operate from a single trigger using a thumb operatable selector bar.

    Abstract: A breech bolt and lock assembly for a gas-operated firearm is provided. The ssembly is contained within a bolt housing which in turn contains a bolt operating spring and a two-part bolt mechanism. The two-part bolt has a cylindrical outer bolt which encloses the inner bolt and firing pin. A second spring operates the firing pin. During firing, the inertia of the firing pin and inner bolt prevents the sudden rearward movement of the discharging cartridge. There is no other locking of the breech, however, the weight of the inner bolt and pin assembly may be changed to accommodate different propellant loads.

    Abstract: A system of articulation units is inserted between sections of a standard lindrical underwater vehicle, such as a torpedo, to provide a highly maneuverable vehicle. Each articulation unit consists of two bulkheads connected by a spherical joint which allows rotation about the joint. The bulkheads are connected to adjacent torpedo sections by means of standard joint bands. A number of hydraulic actuators are spaced radially about the spherical joint between the bulkheads. By selectively activating the actuators, the joint bends the vehicle about its longitudinal axis. The pressure of the surrounding medium against the moving vehicle causes the vehicle to turn in the direction of the bend. Depending on the actuators activated, the vehicle can be made to bend, or turn, in any direction, making for a highly maneuverable vehicle.

    Abstract: A reactor vessel seal for temporarily sealing a reactor pressure vessel from a water-filled refueling canal above the reactor pressure vessel. The reactor vessel seal is installed in place of the removable reactor pressure vessel closure head for inspecting/servicing the reactor vessel. The reactor seal comprises a seal cap having a surface connected to a flange which is complementary to the upper flange of the reactor pressure vessel. A seal is located between the seal cap flange and the upper flange of the reactor pressure vessel. A lifting rig is connected to the seal cap for lifting the seal cap and placing it in position, with the seal cap flange in alignment with the reactor vessel upper flange, such that the seal located between the seal cap flange and the reactor pressure vessel upper flange is compressed by hydrostatic pressure from water in the water-filled refueling canal acting on the surface of the seal cap as water in the reactor pressure vessel is evacuated.

The constrained damping layer includes a continuous damping layer bonded to the surface of the structure for providing the first reduction of vibrational energy transmitted through the structure. The constrained damping layer further includes a segmented constraining layer bonded to a portion of the continuous damping layer for providing a second reduction of vibrational energy transmitted through the structure and the continuous damping layer. The continuous damping layer preferably includes a layer of elastomeric material bonded to the structure with an epoxy bonding compound or the like. The segmented constraining layer includes a plurality of rigid segments, such as aluminum plates, bonded to the continuous damping layer with a bonding compound.

The band cutter has a housing having a barrel chamber and a support channel formed therein, the barrel chamber and the support channel having longitudinal axes which are generally parallel and coaxial to each other. A band slot, extending through the housing and transversely intersecting the support channel, is adapted to receive the band and prevent significant lateral and rotational movement of the band during cutting. A blade is positioned within the support channel and is sized to move along the support channel.

One arm of the angled lever is formed as a hand grip protruding from the weapon for manually moving the tension slide and the breech block. The control element controls pivoting of the weapon deployment devices between the retracted, non-deployed position and the extended, deployed position to facilitate firing of a weapon, and retraction of the weapon deployment devices after firing.

    Abstract: A system for shock hardening the nose fairing bearing plate assembly of a rpedo by controlling the deformation of the bearing plate under shock loads. A stop bolt within a torpedo tube engages the bearing plate to prevent relative movement between the torpedo tube and the torpedo and to transfer loads between the torpedo housing and the torpedo tube. The system includes providing a tang on the bearing plate to increase bending resistance of the plate and provide a bearing surface which more directly transfers loads from the stop bolt through the bearing plate and into the housing. Additionally, a relief slot is machined into the bearing plate to ensure the bearing plate deforms towards the torpedo and does not interfere with retraction of the torpedo from the tube. Finally, a nose fairing restraint prevents the nose fairing from rotating above the plane of the bearing plate when the deformation of the plate prevents the bearing plate from engaging the nose fairing.

    Abstract: An unmanned undersea vehicle system comprises a remote-controlled, unmanned ndersea vehicle and a mother vehicle interconnected by a communication link. The unmanned undersea vehicle includes a weapon compartment, an erectable observation mast and a control element. Within the weapon compartment are a weapon and a buoyancy chamber positioned axi-symmetrically therein. The buoyancy chamber is initially empty and has sufficient capacity so that it can be loaded with seawater whose mass approximates mass of the weapon. The weapon compartment further includes controllable intake valving for enabling seawater surrounding the vehicle to fill the buoyancy chamber. The erectable observation mast obtains environmental information. The control element controls the deployment of the weapon by expelling the weapon from the weapon compartment and thereafter controls the firing of the weapon. The control element cooperates with the intake valving to maintain a predetermined distribution of mass as the weapon is deployed.

    Abstract: A method of replacing a boiling water reactor core shroud includes the steps of removing at least a portion of the existing core shroud from supporting structure in the reactor vessel, lowering a replacement shroud into the reactor vessel, positioning the replacement shroud on the supporting structure such that a bottom portion of the replacement shroud mates cooperatively with the supporting structure to limit lateral movement of the replacement shroud relative to the reactor vessel, and holding the replacement shroud assembly in place by applying axially compressive forces to the shroud in the direction of the supporting structure. If the existing core shroud is secured by welds, a parting cut is made to remove the shroud and the replacement shroud is held in place by securing a plurality of tie rods between sites on the replacement shroud and the supporting structure at a respective plurality of angularly spaced locations about the shroud periphery.

    Abstract: The present invention relates to the fire arm industry and more particularly to a system that impresses a bar type code into the brass cartridge casing that has been fired from a gun. The identifying markings are placed on the gun with as little visibility as possible but enough to form the code to identify the fired casing as being from one specific handgun, rifle or shotgun. The code markings may be placed on the bolt, breech and/or the firing pin of any firearm without effecting its operation in any way. The identifying code markings are impressed on the surface of the shell casing when the firearm is fired. These identifying code marks may be placed at the outer rim surface, inside the primer area rim, on the primer its self or in multiple places on the shell casing. The identifying code markings are similar to bar code markings and directly relates the spent casing that has been fired by a firearm, to that firearm.

    Abstract: A lightweight composite armor including an integrally formed matrix block is disclosed. The matrix block includes a generally planar back, a plurality of intersecting ridges extending from the front of the planar back, and fillets provided at the junctures between the planar back and the ridges and at the juncture between the ridges. The matrix block thus forms a pattern of open topped cells. An energy absorbing ceramic body is located in each cell. Individual front plates sized to fit in the open top of each associated cell in mating contact with the ceramic body and provided with upstanding flanges around the periphery thereof are also provided. A weld around the periphery of the front plates between the flanges and associated tops of the ridges is provided. In this manner, impact by a projectile on one of these front plates substantially limits any damage to that one front plate and the underlying ceramic body leaving the remaining armor substantially undamaged.

An ignition assembly which includes a header having at least one electrically conductive pin and a bridgewire between the header and the pin are installed such that the bridgewire appropriately interfaces with the pyrotechnic material of the initiator. In another aspect, another of the electrical connectors for the header is a shell and is joined to the header by a crimped connection or by a welded connection which also interconnects the shell with the charge cup which contains the pyrotechnic material.

    Abstract: An apparatus for carrying out a surveillance program to monitor the neutron fluence and its effect on vessel materials at a position in the annular space between the pressure vessel and core shroud of a boiling water reactor for the purpose of monitoring vessel embrittlement. The apparatus includes an offset capsule holder assembly which fits in an existing capsule holder attached to the inner surface of the pressure vessel wall. The offset capsule holder assembly positions a new capsule holder radially closer to the core, by an amount determined by neutron transport calculations. The new capsule holder is geometrically identical to the original, or a "replacement in kind", allowing the original surveillance capsules to be immediately reinstalled. With the water moderator in the downcomer annulus, the fluence rate increases significantly when the surveillance capsule is moved radially inward from the pressure vessel inside surface toward the core.
