  • Patent number: 8782165
Abstract: Methods and transcoding proxies for transcoding media streams are described. In one embodiment, a method for transcoding a media stream that is delivered to an end-user device over a communications network involves selecting a transcoding technique for the media stream, transcoding a portion of the media stream using the selected transcoding technique, streaming the transcoded portion of the media stream to the end-user device, while the transcoded portion of the media stream is being streamed to the end-user device, detecting a change in a condition of the communications network, selecting a different transcoding technique in response to the change in the condition of the communications network, transcoding a subsequent portion of the media stream using the different transcoding technique, and streaming the transcoded subsequent portion of the media stream to the end-user device. Other embodiments are also described.

  • Patent number: 8776219
Abstract: Selecting one or more applications from the plurality of similar or near redundant applications to activate. A method includes retrieving information about current characteristics of one or more applications. The method further includes retrieving information about a current computing operational landscape. Based on the information about current characteristics of one or more applications and the information about a current computing operational landscape, the method further includes creating a ranking of applications. The rankings are made available to a system with a plurality of applications with similar or near redundant functionality. At the system, one or more of the applications in the plurality of applications are selected to activate based on the ranking of applications.

  • Patent number: 8769621
Abstract: A method provides for permission-based access to personal information over a communication network. The method includes entering specified owner personal information in an owner terminal, by an owner, to establish a secure owner profile, which is stored in an owner database. The method also includes entering specified user personal information in a user terminal, by a user, to establish a secure user profile, which is stored in a user database. The method further includes entering a user request in the user terminal requesting permission to receive a designated piece of the owner personal information from the secure owner profile. A server determines whether to approve the user request; and provides permission to use the designated piece of the owner personal information to the user over the communication network after the user request is approved by the server.

  • Patent number: 8769644
Abstract: A method and system for facilitating management of cloud-based service instances, the system including one or more computing systems configured to communicate with at least one multi-tenant computing cloud, and configured to establish a cloud-based service instance hosted in the multi-tenant computing cloud and an access entity with permissions to access the established cloud-based service instance. The system can receive a request for the cloud-based service instance, the request authenticated as originating from a requestor; consult a set of access controls associated with the cloud-based service instance; determine, responsive to the consulting, if the request is allowable by the requestor; and enable, responsive to determining that the request is allowable by the requestor, the requestor to complete the request using a restricted access credential associated with the access entity.

  • Patent number: 8751811
Abstract: An integrated circuit 100 is provided, which is configured for authentication itself and technical information concerning the integrated circuit or its installed software to an external computing device 200. The integrated circuit 100 comprises a signer 130 for producing a signature over the information and a challenge using a cryptographic signing key, and a communication module 110 for providing the information and the signature to the computing device 200. In response to receiving the information and the authentication, the computing device 200 may install new application code on the integrated circuit. After the installation, the integrated circuit may authenticate information concerning the new application code to other computing devices. The integrated circuit is advantageously a multiple application smart card, since it allows application providers to obtain trust in the multiple application smart card without having a relationship with its manufacturer.

  • Patent number: 8732275
Abstract: An exemplary method includes a media content presentation system 1) delivering a primary media content stream to a primary access device, the primary media content stream comprising data representative of a media content instance that is presented by the primary access device as the primary media content stream is delivered to the primary access device and data representative of an executable application related to the media content instance, 2) determining that a secondary access device associated with a user is located within a detection zone associated with the primary access device during a time period associated with the presentation of the media content instance by the primary access device, and 3) directing the primary access device to generate and deliver a version of the executable application that is personalized for the user to the secondary access device. Corresponding methods and systems are also disclosed.

  • Patent number: 8726009
Abstract: A system and method to send a secure message from a sender to a recipient using strong encryption protocols without the need for the recipient to create a public/private key pair and by using a third party to appropriately identify the recipient without revealing actual identification information to the third party. Upon successful identification, the third party is able to provide a recipient with information that enables recipient to create and use the actual decryption key without revealing the actual decryption key to the third party.

  • Patent number: 8719940
Abstract: Described herein are methods, network devices and machine-readable storage media for detecting whether a message is a phishing attack based on the collective responses from one or more individuals who have received that message. The individuals may flag the message as a possible phishing attack, and/or may provide a numerical ranking indicating the likelihood that the message is a possible phishing attack. As responses from different individuals may have a different degree of reliability, each response from an individual may be weighted with a corresponding trustworthiness level of that individual, in an overall determination as to whether a message is a phishing attack. A trustworthiness level of an individual may indicate a degree to which the response of that individual can be trusted and/or relied upon, and may be determined by how well that individual recognized simulated phishing attacks.

  • Patent number: 8707039
Abstract: A system and method for delivering content to end users encrypted within a content delivery network (CDN) for content originators is disclosed. CDNs transport content for content originators to end user systems in a largely opaque manner. Caches and origin servers in the CDN are used to store content. Some or all of the content is encrypted within the CDN. When universal resource indicators (URIs) are received from an end user system, the CDN can determine the key used to decrypt the content object within the CDN before delivery. Where there is a cache miss, an origin server can be queried for the content object, which is encrypted in the CDN.

  • Patent number: 8707417
Abstract: A virtualization platform includes a number of virtual machines, one of which is configured as a driver domain and includes the network service control for routing network traffic between the other virtual machines. The privileged domain does not include the network service control. The network service control includes network backend interfaces and a virtual switch or bridge. The driver domain includes a PCI driver for direct communication with a network interface card. The driver domain includes hooking software and an inspection agent. Packets passing between the other virtual machines pass through the driver domain, are hooked, and are inspected by inspection agent to determine if they are malicious or not. Malicious packets are blocked. The driver domain may also utilize a PCI driver of the privileged domain for access to the network interface card. Platforms with or without pass-through mode may be used.

  • Patent number: 8675864
Abstract: An apparatus for encrypting data is provided. The apparatus is capable of symmetrically encrypting data and then encrypting the symmetrically encrypted data with the aid of a bit string. The bit string has a maximum entropy. Encryption of the symmetrically encrypted data is designed such that a section of the bit string is used for encryption and successive encryption operations are carried out with varying sections of the bit string while the bit string remains unchanged.

  • Patent number: 8676994
Abstract: A load balancing scheme is described for a server cluster. An application identifier is received by the cluster from a client desiring to connect to the application. Each one of the servers in the cluster independently hashes the application identifier into a unique number. This unique number is used to determine a preferred one of the servers for the connection. The servers then each calculate a priority code using the unique number, a load level for each server, and/or a node identifier assigned to the servers in the cluster. If the preferred cluster server is available, it transmits its priority code to the client before the other servers transmit their priority codes. Otherwise, each of the available cluster servers transmits their priority codes to the client. The client selects the cluster server with the most favorable priority for making the connection.

  • Patent number: 8412940
Abstract: At registration time, feature data array for registration is generated from biometric information, and position correction template and comparison template. At authentication time, feature data array for authentication is generated from biometric information acquired by the client, and converted feature data for position correction obtained by converting the feature data array for authentication is transmitted to the server. The server detects position correction amount of the feature data array for authentication relative to the feature data array for registration using the position correction template and the converted feature data, and transmits the position correction amount to client. Client corrects the feature data array for authentication and transmits the converted feature data array for comparison to the server.
