  • Patent number: 6581494
Abstract: Embodiments of a bicycle riding training system are disclosed. The system includes a crank assembly that is removable from the bicycle without disruption of the sprocket and chain. The invented system comprises coaxial shafts that rotate preferably together in a hub bearing assembly. The coaxial shafts preferably include an external shaft within the bearing retainer cups of a bicycle frame bottom hub assembly and an internal shaft that connects to the crank arms. The internal shaft preferably is made of two parts that connect at a midpoint within the external shaft using a bolt, screw or other connector. Removing the connector permits withdrawal of the internal shaft while leaving the external shaft and sprocket assembly intact. An additional feature of the connector in the internal shaft is that it may serve to expand or otherwise tighten the internal shaft inside the external shaft, and thereby fix the internal shaft to the external shaft.

  • Patent number: 6575271
Abstract: A wheel and brake system is provided for a vehicle having a wheel with an inner wheel, an outer wheel generally concentric with the inner wheel, and a plurality of resilient members connecting the inner and outer wheels together for resilient movement therebetween. The brake mechanism has a mounting block adjacent the inner wheel and a lever arm pivotally connected thereto for movement between a braking position and a non-braking position. The lever arm has a cam follower with a cam engaging portion that allows the lever arm to move from its non-braking position toward its braking position which in turn causes movement of the cam follower from a disengaged position toward a wheel-engaging position. The cam follower has a wheel-engaging portion adapted for frictional engagement with the inner wheel when the cam follower is in its wheel-engaging position.

  • Patent number: 6571920
Abstract: The invention relates to a wheel hub (1) for a running wheel of bicycle comprising a wheel hub axis (4), a wheel hub sleeve (2) having spoke flanges (3), and at least one bearing (5) located between the wheel hub axle (4) and the wheel hub sleeve (2), whereby arrangements are made for fixing the rotating part of a brake system, especially of a brake disk. Said arrangements consist of an adapter provided with fixing boreholes for fixing the brake disk and provided with an inner profile (8) which, on the wheel hub sleeve (2), can be connected in a rotationally fixed manner to a profile which is arranged on the wheel hub sleeve in a rotative manner and which is adapted to the inner profile. The invention is advantageous in that a universal wheel hub sleeve is produced which can be equipped either with or without a brake disk on which, however, the rotating part of another type of brake device can be applied.

  • Patent number: 6568514
Abstract: A single-use damping mechanism. A piston assembly fits within a chamber defined by a piston receiving member. The distal end of the piston receiving member includes a first and second passages which are disposed in fluidic series between the chamber and the ambient air. The first, inner passage is relatively small and controls the damping time of the mechanism. The second, outer passage is relatively large and holds a sealing assembly that prevents fluid from escaping from the chamber, through the first passage, until the mechanism is to be used. The piston assembly includes a pressure relief assembly, which comprises a cavity filled with a compressible material, into and out of which fluid can flow as necessary to protect the mechanism from temperature related pressure changes, and yet which does not interfere with the damping characteristics of the mechanism.

  • Patent number: 6561322
Abstract: An aluminum alloy brake disc body for a disc brake device is provided with a metal layer of a high wear-resistance. The high wear-resistance metal layer is configured to reduce thermal stresses within the aluminum alloy brake disc body so as to inhibit warping, bending or flexing of the brake disc when heated during braking. The high wear-resistant metal layer also is applied to the aluminum alloy brake disc body in a manner reducing manufacturing costs. In one mode, a plating layer made of a metal having a high wear-resistance is formed on a frictional surface of an aluminum alloy brake disc body. Cracks in the form of a fine network are formed in the whole area of the plating layer. The cracks can be formed by a plating process, by nitrosulphurization, by heating, by burnishing or by use of the plated component. The cracks advantageously provide for expansion between the individual metal fragments and, thus, create an expandable plated wear surface.

  • Patent number: 6547694
Abstract: A CVT has primary and secondary pulleys, and a control unit for controlling the transmission ratio by controlling the line pressure applied to the first and secondary pulleys. The control unit calculates a standard step position of a step motor corresponding to the target transmission ratio and provides a command signal representative of the difference between the standard step position and the current position of the step motor. A shift control valve actuated by the step motor controls the pressure to be applied to the primary pulley. The control unit compares the actual transmission ratio with the target transmission ratio, and if the shift is not completed, the control unit commands an additional step number. Unless the shift to the HI side is accomplished when the additional step number reaches the threshold value, the line pressure is increased to achieve the shift.
