    Abstract: A magnet powder has a primary phase of hexagonal magnetoplumbite ferrite of the formula: A.sub.1-x R.sub.x (Fe.sub.12-y M.sub.y).sub.z O.sub.19 wherein A is Sr, Ba, Ca or Pb; R is Y, rare earth element or Bi (R essentially containing La); M is Zn or Cd; x, y, and z representative of a molar ratio are 0.04.ltoreq.x.ltoreq.0.45, 0.04.ltoreq.y.ltoreq.0.45, and 0.7.ltoreq.z.ltoreq.1.2. This ferrite is increased in saturation magnetization, offering a magnet having high remanence and maximum energy product. The magnet powder may be fired into a sintered magnet or bound into a bonded magnet. A magnetic recording medium comprising the magnet powder as a coating layer is provided as well as a magnetic recording medium comprising a thin film magnetic layer of the hexagonal magnetoplumbite ferrite.

    Abstract: Magnetic paint or ink additives are formulated from ferromagnetic particles, preferably iron powder, having a mixed particle range of from about 0.01.mu. to about 297.mu., and preferably to about 250M and more, preferably from about 0.01.mu. to about 37 to 44.mu.; 6 to 20.mu. particles are used in one latex-based embodiment. Preferred additives are formulated by blending the particles with a surfactant, a surfactant mixture, or a surfactant and alcohol mixture in amounts sufficient to suspend the particles; a polyvinyl acetate polyer is used in one embodiment. The additives may be blended with any oil-, latex-, or lacquer-based paint, ink, or coating to form a magnetic paint or coating having a viscosity substantially similar to the paint or ink containing no particles and/or additive. Surfaces such as paper, cloth, wood, wallboard, sheet rock, foam, foam board, plywood, plastic, fiberboard, and the like so coated may be cut with conventional woodworking tools, scissors or knives.

    Abstract: A piezoelectric ceramic which maintains a high piezoelectric property in a composition having MPB structure and has an excellent ability for stabilizing the resonant frequency is provided. The piezoelectric ceramic has a solid solution expressed by the general expression xPbTiO.sub.3 --(1-x) PbZrO.sub.3 as its main component. The value of x in the above general expression causes the piezoelectric ceramic to have a composition having the morphotropic phase boundary structure. A ceramic having a spinel type structure is dispersed within the structure of the piezoelectric ceramic. The amount of the ceramic having the spinel type structure existing in the structure is set at about 5 volume % or less. Co.sub.2 TiO.sub.4, Mn.sub.3 O.sub.4, Fe.sub.3 O.sub.4, Mg.sub.2 TiO.sub.4 and a ceramic having a compound spinel type structure which is a solid solution of them can be used as the ceramic having the spinel type structure.

    Abstract: Blue, quantum-confined phosphors for field-emission displays made by reducing metal (M) sulfoaluminates at high temperature. This yields phases of the type M.sub.4 (AlO.sub.2).sub.6 S. Bulk sulfide contaminant mixed with the reduced sulfoaluminate phase is removed by treating it with a chelating agent in nonaqueous solution. A photometric cathodoluminescence efficiency of 9 lumen/watt at 1000 V for Sr.sub.3 PbS(AlO.sub.2).sub.6 is observed. Undoped Sr.sub.4 S(AlO).sub.6 displays 5 lumen/watt at 1000 V, with excellent blue chromatic saturation.
