  • Patent number: 5815498
Abstract: A transmission method for ATM cells presented by local stations to a central station, and for ATM cells presented by the central station to the local stations, wherein a cell destined for the central station is stored in a cell buffer of one of the local stations and a first character is written to a register of the local station when the cell destined for the central station is presented in the local station. A second character is written to the register of the local station when an empty time slot is present in the local station. The register of each of the local stations are periodically read, and contents of the read local registers of the local stations are transmitted to the central station as register codes. Permit codes are transmitted from the central station to the local stations based on a location of the first characters in the registers, with the permit codes signifying permission to transmit a cell during a specific time slot.

  • Patent number: 5812537
Abstract: A processor of a cellular modem monitors for the presence of a residual echo signal during a full-duplex portion of a training sequence. In particular, the processor monitors an equalizer error signal during a full-duplex training phase that follows the half-duplex training phase for the echo canceler. If the processor detects a level of the error signal greater than a predefined threshold, the processor presumes the increase in the error signal is due to the presence of a residual echo signal and performs a predefined adjustment of the taps of the corresponding echo canceler of the cellular modem.

  • Patent number: 5805583
Abstract: A method and apparatus for carrying out synchronous code division multiple access (SCDMA) communication of multiple channels of digital data over a shared transmission media. The system includes modems at remote units and a central unit to receive time division multiplexed digital data arranged into timeslots or channels and uses orthogonal codes to encode each channel of multiple data and spread the energy of each channel data over a frame of data transmitted in the code domain. Spreading the data this way makes the system less susceptible to impulse noise. Frames are synchronized as between remote and central units using a ranging scheme which is also useful in any other system transmitting data by frames in a distributed system where synchronizing the frames as between all units regardless of differences in propagation delays is necessary. Each frame in the SCDMA modulation scheme includes a gap or guardband containing no other data.

  • Patent number: 5796738
Abstract: A network (10) includes several local networks (32, 34, 36). Each local network (32, 34, 36) includes a repeater (12, 16, 20) coupled to data devices (14, 18, 22). The combination of the repeater (12, 16, 20) and the data devices (14, 18, 22) form a collision domain for managing communications within the local network (32, 34, 36). Uplink modules (40, 44) manage communications between the local networks (32, 34, 36) by isolating collision domains and generating collision indications when messages cannot be transmitted. The uplink modules (40, 44) may also implement bridging, routing, or filtering capabilities that inhibit transmission of an intra-network message beyond its local network (32, 34, 36).

  • Patent number: 5796735
Abstract: A segmentation and reassembly circuit under the ATM standard uses a transmit cell schedule table (TCST) to support real time transmission of ATM cells in multiple constant bit rate virtual channels. In one embodiment, null cells are intentionally scheduled in a TCST. Transmission of the scheduled null cells ("forced null cells") or non-time critical cells are skipped to compensate for delays in an ATM cell transmission schedule, e.g. delays due to a bus latency. During such latency, null cells are generated from a null cell generator and a negative credit counter is incremented for each ATM cell transmission time missed. When transmission of a forced null cell is skipped, the negative credit counter is decremented.

  • Patent number: 5790515
Abstract: A communication system receiver sorts through potential Walsh indexes and determines survivors for use in subsequent processing. The sort process is implemented in parallel with the subsequent processing so that large amounts of memory to implement a store/sort are eliminated. The communication system receiver implements the sorting operation in a small number of cycles, thereby conserving cycles which could be beneficially utilized for other tasks as required. The sorting operation also lends itself well to a practical implementation from a communication system receiver design perspective.

  • Patent number: 5790538
Abstract: A System for Voice Playout in an Unsynchronized Packet Network for use with isochronous and asynchronous data transmission over a communication network having at least one receiving unit and at least one transmitting unit each having independent clocks. A FIFO voice codeword storing device in the receiving unit removes timing jitter from incoming packets--and receives voice packets from a data network. A phase continuous packet clock thereafter removes packets from the FIFO voice codeword storing device which is synchronized to the incoming data rate using the fill status of the FIFO voice codeword storing device as a frequency control signal. A continuous phase resampler removes timing frequency offset without causing packet slips or loss of data. The transmitter inserts the contents of a free running packet counter into each transmitted packet, allowing the receiver to detect lost packets and to properly reproduce silence intervals during Playout.

  • Patent number: 5764648
Abstract: In a wireless telephone of a mobile communication system, which performs transmission in a series of bursts, in synchronism with a receive signal transmitted from a base station, each transmission burst being performed responsive to a transmission timing signal, a sync signal is detected from the receive signal, the transmission timing signal is generated on the basis of the sync signal, and each transmission burst is effected in accordance with the transmission timing signal. When the sync signal ceases to be detected, the transmission timing signal is autonomously generated for a certain time period after the sync signal is last detected. In another aspect of the invention, during reception in a first channel, the channel quality of another vacant channel is measured by transferring PLL data to a PLL prior to the slot in which the measurement is effected.

  • Patent number: 5764633
Abstract: A digital telephone circuit is transferred from an old line to a new line. Before the transfer, a first stage delay circuit is inserted, wherein the delay of the data is incrementally adjusted to match the delay of a data control element. The data control element is then inserted in series with the data on the old line. The data control element incrementally adjust the delay and amplitude of the data on the old line to match that of the data on the new line. The incremental adjustments to delay and amplitude are within the specifications of the circuit, so as to minimize interruptions to the circuit. Interruptions are also minimized when the circuit is transferred to the new line. The data control element also introduces variations into the data at an upstream location. These are detected at a downstream location and are used for testing and communication purposes. The variations are removed from the data at the downstream end.
