  • Patent number: 4534813
Abstract: Flat pattern equivalents for curved surfaces may be generated by developing a regular network of quadrilateral grid elements resembling a fish net which is mathematically smoothed onto the curved surface. Surface features such as boundaries and cutouts are mapped onto the network. The network is then transformed onto a flat mapping plane to form a grid in a manner analagous to smoothing a fish net mesh onto a flat surface. The surface features are then transformed to the flat surface grid.Individual plies or parts are then cut based upon the flat patterns. The plies or parts will conform to the curved surface exactly.

  • Patent number: 4494648
Abstract: A device for supporting press belts on a roller-supported double belt press for applying support pressure includes a roller bed, press belts arranged to pass over the roller bed, and a seal between the roller bed and the press belts. The roller bed includes a heating plate with a plurality of laterally spaced support bearing strips located on the heating plate and extending in the direction of movement of the press belts over the roller bed. Shafts extend through spaced openings in the support bearing strips with rollers axially serially arranged on the shafts. Rollers on adjacent shafts are closely spaced apart and are axially offset relative to one another. Filling bodies are positioned between laterally adjacent rollers. Narrow gaps are provided between the rollers and the support bearing strips, between the filling bodies and the press belts, and between the rollers and the heating plate so that the lubricant can be moved through the gaps from the inlet side to the outlet side of the roller bed.

  • Patent number: 4488926
Abstract: Apparatus for securing a synthetic thermoplastic strap in a band-like form around an object includes a strap support with a clamping device, a stretching device, and a welding device cooperating with the strap support for holding, stretching, welding and cutting the strap. These various devices can be displaced from the surface of the strap support so that the strap can be inserted laterally onto the support. Strap guidance members are provided at the opposite ends of the strap support. One strap guidance member forms a part of the welding device and includes a guide member. The guide member is retractable away from the surface of the strap support during the welding operation so that it does not interfere with the movement of the strap parts being joined together.

  • Patent number: 4488927
Abstract: An apparatus for C-folding a running length of a covering web such as a polyethylene ribbon about a longitudinally flexible article such as a running length of a core web for making disposable diapers or a stream of longitudinally spaced discrete core segments of such a core web; i.e., a stream of absorbent cores for disposable diapers. The apparatus effects folding each longitudinal edge portion of a covering web downwardly and inwardly about an adjacent longitudinal edge region of the article as the web and the article are forwarded through the apparatus. Each longitudinal edge portion is so folded intermediate a transverse turning member which it passes under, and an oblique turning edge disposed downstream therefrom and over which it passes; and the longitudinal edge portions of the running web and the adjacent longitudinal edge regions of the article become juxtaposed upon passing over their respective oblique folding edges.

  • Patent number: 4482417
Abstract: A hinge for thermoplastic material particularly suitable for loose-leaf binder covers is constructed by embedding an embossed welding die into the thermoplastic material to a depth less than the full height of the embossment so that no vertical lines are produced in the thermoplastic by the longitudinal edges of the die. The resulting surface of the thermoplastic is a hinge containing indentations corresponding to the pattern of the embossed die, which permit the thermoplastic to be folded at the hinge area.

  • Patent number: 4478670
Abstract: Disclosed is a process and apparatus for forming a tube from a flat web by overlapping the edge zones of the web with one another or with a flexible strip while maintaining distance between the adhering, overlapping surfaces in order to provide horizontally straight edges, and thus a circumferentially constant diameter.

  • Patent number: 4475970
Abstract: An integrally formed ratchet (90) and star wheel (95) is disclosed which rotates in unison with a tape applicator wheel (85). Eccentrically formed fingers (96a-d) cooperate with a downwardly facing wall to align and position applicator wheel (85) into correct position after each reciprocation of the splicer (30). Correct alignment is essential because a cutter blade 127 cuts the tape on the applicator wheel into pre-determined lengths by passing through a notch (104) in applicator wheel (85). Misalignment of the applicator wheel (85) may cause blade (127) to impact the applicator wheel (85) itself, damaging or destroying it.

  • Patent number: 4467909
Abstract: An infeed or discharge star for transporting containers to a labeling or filling machine includes a rotating carrousel having a plurality of setting devices mounted in spaced apart relation adjacent its outer periphery. Each setting device comprises a member having rotatably mounted on the carrousel and having a plurality of arcuate surfaces formed in its outer margin. Each surface has a different radias of curvature for engaging containers of different sizes and means for locking the bodies with one of the surfaces selectively facing outwardly relative to the carrousel.

  • Patent number: 4466857
Abstract: The press includes a press table, a tup mounted with respect to the press table to define a press gap for receiving material to be pressed. An endless conveyor band is disposed around each of the table and the tup for conveying the material to be pressed into the press gap. Each conveyor band is mounted by a plurality of rolls. The rolls are mounted to counter supports which comprise a plurality of change plates. The change plates contain roll bearings which mount the rolls. The change plates also contain a heating apparatus and cooling apparatus and are capable of being mounted to and removed from the table and the tup. Each change plate comprises at least one rod mounted on a first level through a roll bearing and through a web plate. Each web plate is attached on a second level to a pressure plate through a connecting rod. In this manner, the counter pressure of the material being pressed is transferred to the pressure plates and can be distributed over a wider area.

  • Patent number: 4450039
Abstract: A splicing head for an automatic zero-speed web splicing machine is disclosed in which the end of a new roll of web material can be prepared for splicing directly on resilient nip rollers which are used by the machine to perform the splicing operation. In particular, the splicing head includes a knife carriage through which the web material passes and which can be moved transversely to the web travel direction under control of a cam and lever arrangement to introduce a predetermined loop of slack into the web material. The action of the cam and lever mechanism also positions a serrated preparation blade mounted on cantilever arms in front of the nip rollers for squarely trimming the edge of the web material.

  • Patent number: 4427478
Abstract: A process is described for fabricating an encapsulated circuit board. The process involves use of an adhesive which is photochemically curable to a limited preselected depth so as to rigidly fix the circuit wires in X and Y directions while permitting limited pliability of the adhesive and hence mobility of the wires in the Z direction. The adhesive preferably is one which is also thermally curable so that at a later stage of fabrication (e.g., either as a part of or after lamination of individual circuit boards into a multilayered circuit board), the complete unit may be thermally bulk cured to rigidly fix all wires in the Z direction.

  • Patent number: 4425177
Abstract: Medical bags composed of plastic sheets jointed at their edges and a fluid charging/discharging tube sealed between the edges of the sheets have sufferred, due to the use of a mold having smooth and straight land conforming with the surface of the tube, various problems such as formation of burrs by the displaced molten plastic material on the inner side of the product bag, weakening or generation of pinholes around the free end of the tube attributable to excessive thinning of the sheets and so forth. According to the invention, these problems are overcome thanks to the use of a mold which has a central first land of an inside diameter slightly smaller than the sum of the tube diameter and thicknesses of sheets and at least one additional land provided at each side of the first land, the additional lands having inside diameters increasing successively and slightly greater than that of the first land.
