  • Patent number: 5987968
Abstract: A module for an on-board evaporative emission leak detection system that detects leakage from an evaporative emission space of a fuel system of an automotive vehicle. A housing provides an inlet port, an outlet port, and a flow path between the inlet port and the outlet port. An electric-motor-operated impeller pump causes flow in one direction along the flow path when in a pumping mode of operation. The pump is open to flow in both the one direction and an opposite direction when in a non-pumping mode. A solenoid-operated valve is disposed in the flow path to block flow through the flow path when in a blocking mode and to pass flow through the flow path when in a passing mode. A pressure switch is exposed to the flow path at the outlet port. A lead frame assembly provides respective electric circuit connections to the motor, solenoid, and pressure switch.

  • Patent number: 5983709
Abstract: The fat content and and undissolved solids content of a milk sample, taken from a milk processing flow, are separately determined. In addition, the total solids content of the milk flow is determnined. Based on the fat, undissolved solids, and total solids content, the amount of protein and/or casein in the flow is determined. In a control portion of the invention, the fat and undissolved solids are controlled dynamically to standard values, whereby the characteristics of the milk flow are adjusted to standard values useable for whole milk, cheese-making and other uses.

  • Patent number: 5979229
Abstract: A process for determining the viscosity of liquids on a microliter scale, wherein first the difference (a) in the pressure drop in a reference liquid flowing in a constant volume flow through a capillary measuring tube is determined with and without a sample loop inserted in the capillary measuring tube passage, the sample loop is filled with the liquid to be measured outside the capillary measuring tube passage, the sample loop is reinserted into the capillary measuring tube passage and the pressure drop is measured immediately following the insertion of the sample loop in the capillary measuring tube passage. The difference (b) in the pressure drop immediately following insertion of the sample loop and the pressure drop across the capillary measuring tube without the sample loop can then be calculated.

  • Patent number: 5979225
Abstract: A quick set of procedures for diagnosing the cause of a failure in a vacuum system having a pump and a chamber is disclosed. If the base pressure of the system has failed, but the rate of rise has not, then the most likely cause of the failure may be in the pump. If the rate of rise has failed, but the base pressure has not, then the most likely cause of the failure may be in the chamber. If the base pressure and rate of rise have both failed, then the most likely cause of the failure is in the chamber, but there is a slight chance of a failure in the pump. Measurements of the partial pressures of certain residual gases in the system may indicate a leak in the system. Measurements of the partial pressures of certain residual gases while tuning off and on the lamps in the system may indicate a leak in the lamps. Measurements of the partial pressure of helium or other relevant gas, while moving a source of helium around the outside surface of the system, may determine the location of a leak.

  • Patent number: 5974862
Abstract: The invention relates to detecting leaks in a pipeline using enhanced methods of data sensing, digitally encoded transmission, and cross-correlation. A plurality of acoustic sensors are applied to the pipeline to sense a combination of signals from the leak and much greater quantities of noise. The sensed data is digitized at the sensor, encoded and digitally transmitted to a computerized base station. The encoded data from a plurality of sensors received at the base station is decoded, digitally filtered and cross-correlated. Enhanced methods of cross-correlation are performed to estimate the likely presence of a leak and the location and size of any leaks present. Participation in the leak detection procedure by an expert not present at the pipeline is facilitated by communication of data between the base station and a distant supervisory station.

  • Patent number: 5974874
Abstract: The "Tank Test" method for determining well tests in low pressured reservoirs or aquifers utilizes gravity drainage from a water storage tank to inject water into the reservoir. The Tank Test eliminates the need for expensive pumping equipment and the required manual pump rate adjustments. The low costs associated with the Tank Test allows the test to run for a longer duration so that a greater portion of the reservoir can be investigated. The duration of the test and thus the radius investigation can be extended by repeatedly refilling the tank as necessary. The Tank Test also reduces the possibility of fracturing the reservoir during injection tests in low permeability reservoirs. The primary criteria for performing a tank test is that the hydrostatic head from the tank to the formation be significantly different than the reservoir pressure. In addition, the Tank Test minimizes stress effects on stress sensitive formations.
