  • Patent number: 5259090
Abstract: A door closer (20) is attachable to a door (24) and is formed with a chamber (44) in which a piston element (50) is movable to move fluid from the chamber to a reservoir (82) upon opening of the door. After the door (24) has been opened to a position, for example, of sixty to seventy-five degrees, continued opening of the door causes the fluid to be compressed within the chamber (44) and to be directed only through a back check valve (95) to the reservoir (82). This results in the development of an adjustable "back check" condition to provide a counterforce to the continued opening of the door. The adjustable valve (95) includes a spring biased ball (144), the biasing of which must be overcome by the force of the fluid being compressed in the chamber (44) to allow for fluid to pass through the valve to the reservoir (82).

  • Patent number: 5259224
Abstract: A pipe bending machine has a bending template (10) around which a pipe (13) is bent. The bending template (10) is provided with a position sensor (32) that detects the bending path in dependence on the rotational position. A pushing device (17) engages the unbent portion (13a) of the pipe and urges the same towards said bending template (10). The pushing device (17) is provided with a position sensor (30). The position signals (PS1, PS2) of the two position sensors (32, 30) are compared in a control circuit (41) and an actuation signal (SS) is generated for controlling a pressure controller (42) to adjust the pressure of the drive (22) of the pushing device (17). The actuation signal (SS) is generated such that, in the case of equal position signals (PS1, PS2), the drive (22) of the pushing device (17) is supplied with a pressure that determines the upsetting force exerted on the pipe.

  • Patent number: 5253499
Abstract: A method and apparatus are provided for straightening a coupling shaft comprising a tubular member having a midship tube shaft affixed at one end thereof, with the midship tube shaft mounted in a center shaft support bearing assembly. The coupling shaft is rotatably supported at the end opposite the midship tube shaft and at the center shaft support bearing which rotatably supports the midship tube shaft of the coupling shaft. The coupling shaft is rotated relative to an indicator for measuring radial misalignment thereof, and the radial misalignment is measured at one or more locations along the midship tube shaft. A force is applied to the coupling shaft to permanently deflect the same and thereby reduce any observed radial misalignment.

  • Patent number: 5251679
Abstract: The present invention is directed to a method and apparatus for bending and cutting outboard terminals, or leads, of surface mountable integrated modules applied to a carrier frame wherein slots are cut in the carrier frame so that retaining webs remain between the slots and the circuit modules. Each of the retaining webs interconnects the outboard terminals along one side of the circuit module to stabilize the terminals during a subsequent bending of the leads. A combination cutting and bending die is moved downward to cut the retaining webs free from one another and to bend the leads into their desired shape. The retaining webs and any excess length of the outboard terminals is then trimmed off, all while the circuit module is held in a hold-down part so that no stresses are transferred to the chip module during bending.

  • Patent number: 5235840
Abstract: A system for processing steel strips in a hot strip mill includes an apparatus and method for minimizing oxide growth on steel strips and reducing wear on work rolls in the finishing mill. In order to reduce oxide build up, steel strips are sprayed with coolant at selected locations throughout the finishing mill and the surface temperature of the strips is controlled to be within the range of an upper limit (T.sub.u) and a lower limit (T.sub.L) where oxide growth is minimized. • Patent number: 5233856
Abstract: A seal device for a hydroforming press includes a housing having a cylindrical bore and a cylindrical seal carrier slidable within the housing bore. The seal carrier has a bore and a tube support which fit closely on outside and inside of the end of the tube to be hydroformed. An actuator is operable to forcibly move the seal carrier from a retracted position withdrawn away from the end of the tube to an extended position in which the seal carrier is installed over the end of the tube. A resilient elastomeric annular seal is carried by the seal carrier and encircles the outer circumference of the tube with some clearance. A seal actuator carried on the seal carrier compresses the seal upon relative movement between the seal actuator and the seal carrier so that the seal is forced radially inwardly to seal against the tube.

  • Patent number: 5231863
Abstract: To facilitate safe loading of a thermal sizing mandrel in an elongated channel of open rectangular cross section, a corner rod die is first lowered into a fixture, and then a channel is lowered into the fixture to a vertical position surrounding the die. A mandrel is inserted downwardly through the channel open interior to press corner rods of the die outwardly against the channel corners to elastically reform the channel substantially to a specified geometry. Mandrel insertion is facilitated by inducing vibratory energy therein and by forming shoes in the fixture acting against the channel outer sides to square off the mandrel cross section in advance of mandrel insertion.
