    Abstract: A telescope eyepiece comprising a series of single-element lenses in a combination that cancels chromatism. A negative field lens produces chromatism that is partly cancelled by an intermediate positive lens. The resulting red and blue focal points behind the intermediate lens are exactly matched by the same focal points for parallel rays assumed to originate from behind the eye lens passing forward, thus creating an achromatic system that cancels the remaining chromatism. An additional one or two intermediate positive lenses may be added to increase the field of view and reduce the curvature of field. The eyepiece designer can set the distortion of the system to zero, or can adjust it in a range from minor pincushion to minor barrel distortion as desired. Spherical aberration is corrected by the selection of curves for the field lens. Astigmatism is corrected by the spacing of the field lens from the next intermediate lens.

    Abstract: Microscope objective lenses are disclosed that comprise an axially movable second lens group for correcting aberrations that arise with changes in the thickness of a cover glass or other transparent body situated between the specimen and the objective lens. An objective lens according to one aspect of the invention comprises, in order from the specimen side, first, second, third, and fourth lens groups. The first lens group is positive and comprises a negative lens cemented to a positive lens, the positive lens having a convex surface facing the specimen side. The second lens group is positive and comprises a cemented lens having a cemented surface having negative refractive power. The third lens group is positive and causes a ray bundle from the specimen, propagating divergently from the specimen, to converge toward the optical axis. The fourth lens group is negative and comprises a positive lens cemented to a negative lens, the negative lens having a concave surface facing the image side.

    Abstract: An objective lens system for a microscope has a high magnification and high numerical aperture. Corrections for various aberrations, and especially coma, can be made over a wide field of view. The system can be used as an objective lens system for a fluorescence microscope. The objective lens system contains a first lens group which has multiple lenses placed in sequence as counted from the object side. The first lens group has a positive focal power. A second lens group includes a first compound lens, prepared by cementing a negative meniscus lens with its convex surface facing the object side and a biconvex lens, and a second compound lens, prepared by cementing a biconcave lens and a biconvex lens. A third lens group has multiple lenses and a negative focal power. A change in aberration can be corrected for by moving the second lens group with respect to the first and third lens groups along the optical axis. The objective lens system meets certain prescribed conditions.
