  • Patent number: 4502920
Abstract: An improved retort apparatus for recovering oil from crushed oil shale moved by gravity through a passageway of an elongated housing includes a control assembly connected adjacent the outlet end of the housing to control the rate of movement of the crushed oil shale through the passageway. A plurality of heat exchangers are located in the housing for transferring heat in sequence to or from the crushed oil shale. The heat exchangers are spaced to define a drying zone, a preheating zone, a hydrocarbon recovery zone, and a waste heat recovery zone. A pump recirculating circuit is provided for passing waste heat recovered from the waste heat recovery zone to the preheating zone. An auxiliary heating assembly connected to the heat exchangers in the hydrocarbon recovery zone delivers sufficient heat to raise the temperature of the crushed oil shale moving through the hydrocarbon recovery zone to the critical temperature for separating hydrocarbons in vapor form therefrom.

  • Patent number: 4495117
Abstract: The invention concerns a method for manufacturing a contact lens, through molding within water-tight molds. The polymerization of lenses is insured by arranging a number of molds within one or several sealed metallic chambers (9) constituting a resonant cavity of a unique mode for an ultra high frequency wave; these molds are positioned in an area of the cavity where the electromagnetic field approximately of ultra high frequency waves is homogeneous, and are distributed so that the amounts of basic composition to be polymerized act as a load fitted to the inside of said cavity.

  • Patent number: 4493628
Abstract: A melt spinning apparatus is disclosed which is adapted for forming a plurality of synthetic filaments from a molten polymer. The apparatus comprises a spin block composed of a spin plate having a plurality of transverse ducts, a cover plate overlying the spin plate, and a cavity formed between the two plates and communicating with the ducts for receiving the molten polymer. A pair of side plates are disposed along respective opposite sides of the block, and the block and side plates include mating inclined contact surfaces whereby tightening of the side plates against the block causes the spin plate and cover plate to be pressed toward each other, whereby a seal is formed between the plates which prevents leakage of the molten plastic from the cavity.

  • Patent number: 4485061
Abstract: A method and apparatus for forming a round end on a small plastic filament which includes a die having a channel extending into one side with a hemispherical interior end and a bore extending into the other side and coaxially aligned with the channel and having a conic interior end. The tip of the conic section communicates with the hemispherical section. A relief recess is spaced from the periphery of the hemispherical section by a land portion. The peripheral edge of the land portion, which also forms the edge of the channel, may be formed into a knife edge. In the die the filament is cold-formed to provide a hemispherical section spaced apart from the distal end of the filament. Material displaced during the cold-forming process is deposited in a relief section extending peripherally about the channel.

  • Patent number: 4475987
Abstract: Fragile agglomerates with crushed rock fragments, such as fines which are subsequently agglomerated and which result in the crushing of rock fragments, such as oil shale prepared for retorting are mixed and delivered onto conveying means, such as a travelling grate by charging the rock fragments into a bin which delivers through a choke-feed onto the conveyor or travelling grate by introducing the agglomerates through a series of space conduits or tubes terminating inside the bin below the level of the lump material or fragments in the bin where the rock fragments have a downward travel such as to enable the aggregates to diffuse from the ends of the spaced pipes into and through the fragments and while so separated and diffused through the fragments move with the fragments onto the grate.

  • Patent number: 4441694
Abstract: A safety shield for containing and deflecting a fluid leaking from a flanged pipe coupling in the form of an arcuate strip of transparent fluoropolymer. The strip has a flange along each circumferential edge which is integral with the strip and extends radially inwardly thereof. The strip is of sufficient length to encase the circumference of the pipe coupling flange to which it is applied with the opposing ends overlapping and fastened together. The flanges closely engage the radial surfaces of the coupling flanges. The safety shield is obtained by heat-shrinking a heat-shrinkable tube of fluoropolymer while restricting radial shrinkage thereof except the marginal edge portions which become the flanges.
