  • Patent number: 7210159
Abstract: Television schedule information transmission and utilization systems transmit TV schedule data and associated network control messages provided by computer as packets via the Video Blanking Interval (VBI) lines in the TV signal from various television program providers. This data is acquired by regional data processing systems and forwarded by the regional data processing systems to subscriber units and used to construct an internal database. This internal database can be accessed by the subscriber unit to display a TV schedule for the channels that are received by the user's TV.

  • Patent number: 7188356
Abstract: A program transmitting/receiving system has a center device and a terminal device connected through a communication device to the center device. The center device has a program information memory, a program information transmitter, a broadcasting device, and a request program transmitter. The terminal device has a program information receiver, a program receiver, an image information generator, a program request signal transmitter, and a request program receiver. The memory stores a program information. The program information transmitter transmits the program information to the terminal device. The broadcasting device broadcasts the program to the terminal device in accordance with a schedule, and stores the program. The request program transmitter receives a request signal of the program from the terminal device, and transmits the program corresponding to the request signal to the terminal device. Then, the program information receiver receives the program information.

  • Patent number: 7178161
Abstract: A master movie and player are created on the fly. The master movie is created based on characteristics of a movie or other asset to be viewed by the player. The player is constructed from a template having rudimentary player capabilities for a predetermined connection speed. Tracks selected by suppliers and user/e-tailers are added to customize the player. Different players are constructed for various predetermined connection speeds. When an asset is to be viewed, a server downloads the master movie matching a content viewer's request to the content viewer's machine. The master movie determines the connection speed and send a message back to the server. The server then downloads the player for the asset requested by the content viewer and matching the content viewer's connection speed. The requested asset is then streamed to the content viewer.

  • Patent number: 7120923
Abstract: Electronic television program guide information is downloaded, stored and searched by a local device. A plurality of linked lists are used to remove redundancy, increase search speed, and allow dynamic categories. When a new category is encountered a new head node for a link list data structure is created. When a first program guide object containing information related to that category is downloaded, a link is made (i.e., a pointer is stored) from the head node to the guide object. When subsequent program guide objects containing information related to that category are downloaded, links are added to the end of the list or inserted in alphabetical order. As guide objects expire the links are removed. When no links remain in a particular category the head node for that category is deleted.

  • Patent number: 7093276
Abstract: In a CATV trunk amplifier, a downward signal input to an input terminal from the center equipment side is input to a downward amplifying circuit via a first filter and a second filter. The amplified downward signal is output to the terminal device side via the second filter, the first filter, and an output terminal. An upward L signal is input from the terminal device side via the output terminal to an upward L amplifying circuit via the first filter and a third filter. The amplified upward L signal is output to the center equipment side via the third filter, the first filter, and the input terminal. An upward H signal is input to an upward H amplifying circuit via a fourth filter. The amplified upward H signal is output to the center equipment side via the fourth filter and the input terminal.

  • Patent number: 7086082
Abstract: For transmitting delay-critical data in a digital, time division form in an additional channel of a cable television system, the slots of the channel are further divided into smaller mini slots, for the indication of which the same cyclic indication is used as with which the superframes controlling the use of the channel indicate the original slots. A method based on mini slots is compatible with DAVIC 1.0 and 1.1 specifications.

  • Patent number: 7082613
Abstract: A tuner may select a predetermined real channel from a plurality of real channels, and may obtain a broadcast signal of this selected real channel. A program information extracting section may extract program information (IPG) of a plurality of real channels from this broadcast signal. A controller may create a user profile in which information of programs received at every unit time of a day were accumulated as user profile information by using the program information (IPG). Further, the controller may create a virtual channel guide in which programs of a plurality of real channels are located selectively by using this user profile.

  • Patent number: 7065781
Abstract: The invention which is the subject of this application relates to the ability to utilize a receiver and processing means for received data in the reception of multiple transport streams of data. Processing components which are included in receiver apparatus are provided with the ability to only receive one transport stream of data at any one time. In the current invention, in order to present to the processing components in the receiver, one single transport stream, but still allow the receiver apparatus to receive multiple transport streams of data, there is provided a means of initially processing the received multiple streams of data which involves the steps of demultiplexing the data from the multiple transport streams, re-mapping the data, selecting packets of data in accordance with user and receiver selection criteria and then multiplexing the said selected packets of data into a single stream of data which can then be presented to the processing components.

  • Patent number: 7051355
Abstract: In a step S1, when the user executes a tuning operation (a service-number input operation) on an input section, the information is output to a control section. In a step S3, the control section determines whether the service number selected in the step S1 corresponds to a promotion channel. When it is determined that the service number corresponds to a promotion channel, the procedure proceeds to a step S11. In the step S11, the control section displays on the monitor a message indicating that the selected service number is not found.

  • Patent number: 7047555
Abstract: In order to correctly perform frequency conversion without using a pilot signal from an external system in a CATV system in which an upward signal is converted to a high frequency in-building upward signal using an up-converter and the in-building upward signal is converted to the original upward signal using a down-converter, there is proposed a down-converter provided with a reference oscillation circuit for generating a reference signal with a frequency lower than that of a downward signal or the in-building upward signal. The in-building upward signal is frequency-converted using the reference signal and the reference signal is transmitted to a transmission line of the terminal side. A bi-directional amplifier on the transmission line can not only amplify the downward signal and the in-building upward signal bi-directionally but also transmit the reference signal to an up-converter of the terminal side.

  • Patent number: 7039930
Abstract: Advertising is marked with a code in a way which makes it difficult to fool the system. The advertising is marked with a code at the time the advertising is produced. Then, when the advertising is broadcast, the code on the advertising is analyzed. Different security measures can be used, including producing the code in the closed captioning so that many different people can see the code, or comparing codes in one part of the signal with a code in another part of the signal. Measures are taken to prevent the code from being used to detect commercials. According to another part of this system, a paradigm for a clearinghouse is disclosed in which the user signs up with the clearinghouse, obtains a line of credit, and the advertiser, the agency, and the ad producer also subscribe to the service. When the ad is actually aired, the payment can be automatically transferred.

  • Patent number: 7032239
Abstract: A system enables connection information and content description information to be separately transmitted from a broadcaster to a receiver. Thus, the description of the content may be provided to a receiver prior to the time that the information needed to specify the connection to the service such as a channel is known. By uncoupling the content description and connection information, the assignment of connection information may be managed dynamically in the broadcast network.

  • Patent number: 7020892
Abstract: A time-shifted video method has a real-time mode during which real-time video frames are delivered for display. In a time-shifted mode, time-shifted video frames are delivered for display. The time-shifted video frames are delayed relative to the real-time video frames. A real-time frame is paused during a transition from the real-time mode to the time-shifted mode.

  • Patent number: 7020894
Abstract: In order to synchronise video and audio signals, a video test signal and an audio test signal are generated at the transmitting end of a transmission link, and transmitted over the link. The video test signal has first and second active picture periods of contrasting states. The audio test signal has first and second periods of contrasting states. As generated, the video and audio test signals have a predetermined timing relationship—for example, their changes of respective states may be coincident in time. At the receiving end of the link, the video and audio test signals as received are detected, and any difference of timing between the video and audio test signals is derived from their changes of respective states, measured and displayed, including an indication of whether the video signal arrived before the audio signal or vice-versa.
