  • Patent number: 8930213
Abstract: An event management system and method detects the occurrence of events as a function, at least in part, of information and data gathered from monitoring one or more patients with a medical information system. Event detection processes can be defined and then triggered to cover any of a variety of circumstances. For instance, event detection processes can be defined that, when triggered, indicate that a certain patient (or patients) would make a suitable candidate for that clinical trial, a patient is a candidate for a certain type of treatment, or hospital resources are being utilized in a certain manner. That is, such events may relate to the efficiency or inefficiency in use of certain resources, or such events may concern usage under certain circumstances.

  • Patent number: 8700433
Abstract: A computer-implemented method for profiling medical claims to assist health care managers in determining the cost-efficiency and service quality of health care providers. The method allows an objective means for measuring and quantifying health care services. An episode treatment group (ETG) is a patient classification unit, which defines groups that are clinically homogenous (similar cause of illness and treatment) and statistically stable. The ETG grouper methodology uses service or segment-level claim data as input data and assigns each service to the appropriate episode. The program identifies concurrent and recurrent episodes, flags records, creates new groupings, shills groupings for changed conditions, selects the most recent claims, resets windows, makes a determination if the provider is an independent lab and continues to collect information until an absence of treatment is detected.

  • Patent number: 8600142
Abstract: Various embodiments of the present invention provide methods and systems for optimally staining biological samples for analysis. In one embodiment, images of a sample are recorded before and after the application of a staining reagent and a decolorization reagent. A difference image is then generated based at least in part on a comparison of the images of the sample recorded before and after the application of the staining and decolorization reagents. Application parameters of the staining and decolorization reagents are then corrected based at least in part on the difference image such that the reagents may be optimally reapplied to generate a final image of the sample that may enable a user to better differentiate at least one target of interest in the sample. In one example, embodiments of the present invention allow for the generation of images that show only Gram-positive bacteria or only Gram-negative bacteria.

  • Patent number: 8554580
Abstract: A knowledgebase comprising a plurality of feature-sets is created using complexity science. The knowledgebase is accessible through a network to a computer, a system, and a computer program code that receives and analyzes medical data to determine the existence of a disease state. The medical data is input and correlated to features within the knowledgebase to identify feature-sets, each feature-set indicating a particular medical condition. After one or more feature-sets have been selected, associative algorithms consider the magnitudes or values of the medical data and, with the values of features in the feature-sets, assess the risk burden of the medical condition associated with the feature-set. An output is generated that may include diagnoses of one or more medical conditions, the risk burden of the medical condition(s), possible treatment options and prevention techniques.

  • Patent number: 8548823
Abstract: A computer implemented method, apparatus, and computer program product for modifying neuropsychiatric treatment plans based on efficacy of treatment. A current treatment plan comprising a first set of therapies to treat a set of neuropsychiatric conditions and portions of the medical literature associated with the set of neuropsychiatric conditions is retrieved. A set of brain scans of the patient is analyzed to determine a set of changes over time associated with the set of neuropsychiatric conditions. The portions of the medical literature and the set of changes are analyzed to determine a patient rate of response to the treatment plan. If the patient rate of response falls below a threshold expected rate, a set of alternative treatments for the patient is identified. A modified treatment plan is generated using the set of alternative treatments.
