  • Patent number: 6480718
Abstract: A system and method for automatic frequency planning in a wireless communications network is disclosed. The method determines frequency isolation between a first and second cell of the wireless communication network. The method broadcasts a first frequency in the first cell and a second frequency in the second cell. A mobile unit operating in the first cell measures both the first and second frequencies and reports the measurements using a mobile assisted handoff (MAHO) procedure. In some embodiments, the mobile unit repeatedly measures and reports the first and second frequencies. The difference between the first and second frequency is stored in an isolation matrix and analyzed to determine the frequency isolation.

  • Patent number: 6477353
Abstract: Information transmitted from an information origin is transferred from one mobile station to another. At this time, in the mobile station, the transmission of the information is controlled so that the information is not transmitted to a distance more than a predetermined value from the position of the information origin. A valid period of the information is defined and only the information within the valid period is transmitted. Alternatively, controls are carried out in order to avoid overlapping of the transfer paths and detours of them. Particularly, if a density of the mobile stations becomes high, the quantity of the information to be transferred increases tremendously. Therefore, it is necessary to select and limit the information to be transferred. If the mobile station is a portable information terminal and a personal user has this portable information terminal, the information origin is a retail store and transmits special sale information and the like as well as position information.

  • Patent number: 6466571
Abstract: A method of finding a mobile wireless communications device when an Internet Protocol (IP) packet from a remote user is sent to the device over an IP network. The mobile device does not have to register with the IP network in order to receive the IP. The method comprises the steps of receiving the IP packet at a home agent associated with a wireless communications network. The IP packet includes an IP address assigned to the device. If there is no current mobility binding record for the mobile device, instead of dropping the packet the home agent sends an access-request packet, containing the IP address, to an authentication server. The authentication server, e.g., a RADIUS server, maintains a table mapping the IP address for the device to an identification number uniquely associated with the device, such as the device's International Mobile Subscriber Identity number.

  • Patent number: 6438375
Abstract: The present invention coordinates paging, network restriction, and other network-based communications (e.g., mobile measurement requests for O&M) in a mobile telecommunications network. Paging messages, network messages, and other messages may be consolidated in one message so that the mobile need only power up once to retrieve the various information provided in the one message. In one example, non-limiting embodiment, paging groups of mobile stations and network access restriction groups of mobile stations are merged into a single set of paging and network access restriction groups to which different mobile stations belong. A mobile station therefore need only process one message in order to be informed about paging and network access restriction information pertinent to that mobile station.

  • Patent number: 6430393
Abstract: An improved satellite communication device and system are provided. The satellite communication device uses yaw or roll-yaw steering to linearize angular track of uplink cells; one-dimensional linear “ratcheting” in an uplink antenna to maintain resource allocation of uplink cells along antenna columns; phased-array downlink antennas which can track earth-fixed downlink cells while compensating for the yaw (or roll-yaw) satellite steering; and variable rate TDMA service among downlink cells in a footprint. As a result, system overhead for performing new resource allocations between satellite handovers is minimized, thereby reducing resource management and increasing system capacity. Flexible bandwidth/capacity assignment of both uplink and downlink resources to earth locations via linear cell ratcheting, uplink RF peaking switch, and data-driven variable-TDMA downlink phased-arrays, is provided.

  • Patent number: 6400937
Abstract: A radio local loop (RLL) system which can automatically reallocate fixed subscriber units to a different radio domain without expending the costly and time consuming efforts needed to manually readjust antennas. By transmitting a code to the fixed subscriber unit, whereby the code identifies a second radio domain, an antenna associated with the fixed subscriber unit automatically adjusts such that said subscriber unit can communicate with the second domain using a radio channel. While the scan angle of the antenna is adjusted, the fixed subscriber unit derives a signal quality value for a number of radio channels. Based on the signal quality values, the RLL system determines whether the second radio domain exhibits superior signal quality characteristics as compared to the first radio domain. If the second radio domain exhibits superior signal quality characteristics than the first radio domain, the fixed subscriber unit is reallocated to the second domain.

  • Patent number: 6370392
Abstract: Various methods for effectively detecting the discontinuous transmission (DTX) mode are provided both from the physical layer perspective and from the medium access layer (MAC) perspective. The DTX mode transmission on reverse supplemental channels is detected by comparing a transmitted and a received power ratio of a pilot channel and a supplemental channel. For a reverse link communication, the DTX mode transmission is detected on dedicated control channels. The DTX mode transmission on a forward link supplemental channel can also be detected by monitoring both the transmitted and received power ratios of a primary power control channel and the supplemental channel. As an alternative to or in combination with the above mentioned methods, in order to monitor the DTX mode, a new network parameter is introduced which requires a change in the IS-2000-3 standard. This parameter acts as an indicator signaling to a receiver, from the MAC layer, that the transmitter has entered into the DTX mode.
