  • Patent number: 10473459
Abstract: A waveguide apparatus includes a planar waveguide and at least one optical diffraction element (DOE) that provides a plurality of optical paths between an exterior and interior of the planar waveguide. A phase profile of the DOE may combine a linear diffraction grating with a circular lens, to shape a wave front and produce beams with desired focus. Waveguide apparatus may be assembled to create multiple focal planes. The DOE may have a low diffraction efficiency, and planar waveguides may be transparent when viewed normally, allowing passage of light from an ambient environment (e.g., real world) useful in AR systems. Light may be returned for temporally sequentially passes through the planar waveguide. The DOE(s) may be fixed or may have dynamically adjustable characteristics. An optical coupler system may couple images to the waveguide apparatus from a projector, for instance a biaxially scanning cantilevered optical fiber tip.

  • Patent number: 10403026
Abstract: Techniques for selectively removing Monte Carlo (MC) noise from a geometric buffer (G-buffer). Embodiments identify the G-buffer for rendering an image of a three-dimensional scene from a viewpoint. Embodiments determine, for each of a plurality of pixels in the image being rendered, respective world position information based on the three-dimensional scene and a position and orientation of the viewpoint. A pre-filtering operation is then performed to selectively remove the MC noise from the G-buffer, based on the determined world position information for the plurality of pixels.

  • Patent number: 5969703
Abstract: In a three-slot addressing scheme for a liquid crystal optical modulator, where the data waveforms comprise a data section, a charge-balancing section and a further section, the form of the further section depends upon the sequence of data waveforms. The further section or pair of adjacent further sections comprises a pair of pulses of opposite polarities which charge-balance each other. The order in which these pulses occur in the pair enhances the effect of the adjacent data section to aid or inhibit switching as appropriate. This facilitates a shorter line address time.

  • Patent number: 5952992
Abstract: Method and apparatus for automatically adjusting the brightness level of an LCD based on the ambient lighting conditions of the environment in which the LCD is being operated are disclosed. In a preferred embodiment, a photodetector located proximate the front of the LCD generates to brightness control circuitry signals indicative of ambient lighting conditions. These signals are correlated to predetermined automatic brightness control values for use in controlling the brightness level of the LCD. Once the ambient light signals have been used automatically to set the brightness level of the LCD, user-selection of a different brightness level, either higher or lower, will override the automatic brightness control setting. In an alternative embodiment, a first photodetector is located proximate the front of the LCD and a second photodetector is located proximate the back of the LCD. In this embodiment, the brighter ambient condition is used to control the brightness level of the LCD.

  • Patent number: 5936603
Abstract: An IC driver mounted on a LCD display package contains a sensor for determining temperature of the LCD cell, and a digital value of the temperature is serially transmitted to a remote microprocessor which determines compensated voltage and sends voltage command data back to the IC driver which produces a drive voltage by a charge pump. A digital code on the LCD cell identifies cell response characteristics and the code is used by the microprocessor to calculate the desired voltage. A ROM in the IC driver stores many bit-mapped images which are selected by the microprocessor for display.
