  • Patent number: 7256848
Abstract: In a method and apparatus of aligning liquid crystal, a first ion beam is formed. The first ion beam is transformed into a second ion beam having transformed cross-section. The second ion beam advances toward a thin film including carbon-carbon double bond. The second ion beam forms a first angle with respect to the thin film. The second ion beam is transformed into an atomic beam. The atomic beam is irradiated onto the thin film to break the carbon-carbon double bond. The carbon-carbon double bond is broken to form a polarized functional group for aligning a liquid crystal molecule.

  • Patent number: 7224418
Abstract: A liquid-crystal droplet accreting onto an alignment layer spreads in a wet state but the diameter of the liquid-crystal droplet does not become greater than a certain size. When the diameter of the liquid-crystal droplet in that state is represented by Dmax and is defined as the largest wet-spread diameter of the liquid-crystal droplet, the liquid-crystal droplet is dropped on a substrate such that the spacing I between the drop center C of the liquid-crystal droplet and the inner edge of the sealant (the edge of the sealant close to a display area) is greater than half of the largest wet-spread diameter Dmax of the liquid-crystal droplet.

  • Patent number: 7218366
Abstract: A liquid crystal display device, by which a reduction of costs of a color filter is realized and declining of the transmittance or reflectance due to an alignment error is suppressed, comprising a pair of substrates arranged facing to each other over a liquid crystal layer, wherein one substrate is formed pixels PXL arranged in matrix. Each pixel is formed a reflection portion for reflecting an outside light and a transmission portion for transmitting a light. The other substrate is formed a color filter colored to be different colors (red, green and blue) corresponding to respective pixels. One or more color adjusting windows CFW having a coloring concentration of zero or less than that of other portions are provided on reflection regions CFR superposing with reflection portions inside pixel regions corresponding to respective pixels.

  • Patent number: 7212266
Abstract: The liquid crystal display comprises a first substrate 2 including a gate bus line 12a, a data bus line 28, a thin film transistor 18 formed near an intersection between the gate bus line 12a and the data bus line 28, and a pixel electrode 52 including a transmission electrode 32a electrically connected to the thin film transistor 18 and a reflection electrode 48b electrically connected to the transmission electrode 32a; a second substrate 4 opposed to the first substrate 2 and including an opposed electrode 68 opposed to the pixel electrode 52; and a liquid crystal layer 6 sealed between the first substrate 2 and the second substrate 4. The reflection electrode 48b is formed over another gate bus line 12b which is different from the gate bus line 12a, with an insulation layer 40 formed therebetween. The decrease of a voltage applied between the reflection electrode 48b and the opposed electrode 68 can be prevented while the space which can be not used as the transmission region can be utilized.

  • Patent number: 7184106
Abstract: A method of forming a liquid crystal display device includes forming an amorphous silicon layer over a substrate and forming a light reflecting layer only over a first portion of the amorphous silicon layer. The amorphous silicon layer is then irradiated with a laser to convert it to a polysilicon layer. The light reflecting layer partially reflects the light away from the first portion of the amorphous silicon layer such that a first portion of the polysilicon layer has a first polysilicon grain size and a second portion of the polysilicon layer has a second polysilicon grain size, which is larger than the first polysilicon grain size. A first plurality of thin film transistors having reduced leakage current characteristics may then be formed from the first portion of the polysilicon layer.

  • Patent number: 7167223
Abstract: A transflective liquid crystal display panel, in which at least one of a pixel electrode substrate and a counter electrode substrate is provided with a protruding portion so that the thickness of a liquid crystal layer in a reflective region is smaller than that in a transmissive region, wherein a light-blocking section for shading a defective orientation domain formed by an insufficiently-rubbed portion around the protruding portion is formed simultaneously with, and using the same material as, another element such as a storage capacitor electrode section, a signal line or a scanning line. Thus, the decrease in the display quality due to the defective orientation domain can be suppressed without adding to the production process.

  • Patent number: 7167221
Abstract: A color filter (30) includes a black matrix (33), and the black matrix has a first antireflection layer (331) and a second antireflection layer (332) on the first antireflection layer. Each antireflection layer includes a first antireflection film (3311, 3321) having a first refraction index, and a second antireflection film (3312, 3322) having a second refraction index which is different to the first refraction index. Because of so-called destructive interference of outside source light beams reflected from various interfaces defined by the first and second antireflection films, net reflection of the light beams by the black matrix back to an outside of the color filter is minimal. For similar reasons, net reflection of internal source light beams by the black matrix back to an inside of the color filter is minimal. As a result, visibility of a liquid crystal display device (300) employing the color filter is improved.
