  • Patent number: 8744479
Abstract: The present invention relates to a method for locating at least one mobile radio subscriber in a mobile radio network. The mobile radio subscriber transmits a measurement report that includes an itemization identifying at least two transmitting stations. A value correlated with the receive field strength of a signal from the transmitting stations is allocated to each transmitting station. A table is organized according to geographic units of a presettable area. A pre-calculated value correlated with the receive field strength of a signal from a transmitting station is allocated to each transmitting station. The transmitting stations are organized according to the values correlated with the receive field strength of the signal from the respective transmitting station. The location of the mobile radio subscriber is determined based on the geographic unit meeting at least one presettable criterion.

  • Patent number: 8718596
Abstract: A wireless device identifier and an access point identifier are associated with location information that identifies a location associated with a network access point that is associated with the access point identifier. Call signaling information requesting a call to an emergency service is received from a wireless device connected wirelessly to the network access point via a wireless network connection. The access point identifier is received from the wireless device. Based on the access point identifier, and the wireless device identifier, the location information is retrieved. The location information is transferred to an emergency service system. The call for the emergency service is established to the emergency service system.

  • Patent number: 8718657
Abstract: A mobile communications system having improved spectral efficiency, and methods and apparatus to achieve this improved spectral efficiency. In the mobile communications system communication with a plurality of mobile terminals is provided by a base station. Within the system terminals are adapted to communicate with one or more adjacent similar terminals to establish groups of terminals, called micro-cells. Each terminal within a micro-cell receives signals from the base station and then performs a first processing step on these signals. These processed signals are shared with all the other terminals within the micro-cell. Each terminal then performs a second processing step on the information it has received from all the other terminals within the micro-cell which enables it to derive a signal intended for reception by that terminal. The technique is applicable to both the uplink and the down link and also to peer to peer communication.

  • Patent number: 8688095
Abstract: A mobile device is configurable to accommodate multiple personas and associated profiles. Once the mobile device is triggered to configure itself with a selected persona/profile, no more information is required by a user (the provider of the trigger) of the mobile device. Each persona/profile is autonomous from any other persona/profile with which the mobile device can be configured. A persona is indicative of a personality, role, or identity portrayed by the device, such as a phone number, for example. A profile is indicative of functions associated with a persona. The mobile device is easily reconfigured via simple UI operations.

  • Patent number: 8588746
Abstract: A method for establishing communication via a VoIP network bypasses the IP PBX component conventionally used to obtain address information. Instead of obtaining the IP address from a location register of the IP PBX, the method involves use of a server configured to assign and provide to the caller's communication device a unique address (IP address/port) of a proxy. The caller then sends a Short Message Service (SMS) text message to the callee with the assigned address of the proxy. Thereafter, the caller and the callee connect at the assigned address of the proxy, thereby forming a communication path. Preferably, the devices operated by the parties are conventional smart phones. According to the preferred embodiment of the present invention, the method further comprises the steps of: determining whether to encrypt the communication; and encrypting the communication, if it is determined that the communication is to be encrypted.

  • Patent number: 8548475
Abstract: An electronic device has wireless communications circuitry that supports communications using multiple radio access technologies. The electronic device may gather information such as data rate values, power consumption values, and other data for a currently active radio access technology and an alternative radio access technology. The electronic device may automatically switch between the currently active radio access technology and the alternative radio access technology based on a value of a data rate efficiency metric. The data rate efficiency metric may represent how efficiently each radio access technology is capable of using power to convey a given amount of data per unit time. The data rate efficiency metric may be evaluated using measured power consumption data, measured data rate values, and operating parameters such as signal strength and transmitted power parameters.
