A backlight is arranged behind or beneath an open cell to illuminate picture elements. The open cell and the backlight rest or reside within a cover shield. Because the open cell may have supplier variability, the cover shield has receptacles such as holes or apertures that align with features protruding from a module fixture. The modular fixture thus allows the open cell and the backlight to be arranged, aligned, and/or assembled to the covert shield, despite the supplier variability in the open cell.

A structure is fabricated. Drive substrates having terminal portions are formed by dividing a first substrate. A protection film is attached to a second substrate side of the structure. Grooves are formed in the second substrate near the terminal portions through the protection film. Counter substrates are formed by cleaving the second substrate from the grooves, the end surface of each counter substrate on the terminal portion side including a cleaved surface. Liquid crystal devices are fabricated in each of which a drive substrate and a counter substrate are bonded to each other by a seal, and a liquid crystal is filled in a gap between the drive substrate and the counter substrate and sealed by the seal.

    Abstract: A multi-spectral lens comprises a circular polarizer and a tunable cholesteric filter having an associated reflection band. Incoming light is circularly polarized to one handedness by the circular polarizer, and the tunable cholesteric filter transmits the circularly polarized light and reflects the opposite handedness of the circularly polarized light if within the reflection band of the filter, with the reflection band of the tunable cholesteric filter varying with a control voltage. In a preferred embodiment, a mirror is arranged to receive light transmitted by the tunable cholesteric filter and reflect it back towards the filter with flipped handedness, with the reflected light with flipped handedness that is within the reflection band of the tunable cholesteric filter reflected by the tunable cholesteric filter back toward the mirror. The architecture described effectively converts the reflection band of a tunable cholesteric filter into a tunable bandpass filter for a multi-spectral imaging lens.
