Abstract: A telephone or two-way digital paging communication system providing an alternative partial communication format in which an acknowledgement signal is transmitted from a telephone device in response to a received voice or data signal. The communication system is switchable between different types of communication formats including full two-way voice or data service, partial two-way service and one-way pager service. The communication system may be implemented in a cellular network in which a portable cellular telephone is adapted to transmit signals at different transmission rates so as to increase its operable range.

Abstract: For use in combination with a data processing apparatus (50) which is provided with a card connecting portion for connecting a card-shaped device therewith, a portable telephone apparatus (20) has a card-shaped portion which can be connected to the card connecting portion instead of the card-shaped device. The data processing apparatus is for processing a datum. When the card-shaped portion is connected to the card connecting portion, the datum can be transferred between the data processing apparatus and the card-shaped portion. Therefore, the portable telephone apparatus enables the data processing apparatus to carry out communication relating to the datum.
Abstract: A system and method implements a backup digital control channel (DCCH) within a base station in a telecommunications network without relying on backup auto-tuners. When a DCCH fails, a backup DCCH is created by reconfiguring an available time slot in a different transmitter in the associated base station. All neighboring cells and neighboring outer cells are notified of the creation of the backup DCCH in the cell serviced by the base station, and update themselves accordingly.
Abstract: In a radio communication apparatus having both portable telephone portion and radio paging portion, the portable telephone portion comprises a portable telephone transmission/reception unit 21, a control unit 23, a speech transceiver 25, a display unit 27, and an operation unit 29, while the radio paging portion comprises a radio paging receiver unit 31, the control unit 23, the display unit 27, the operation unit 29, a tone generation announcement unit 33, a silent announcement unit 35, an announcement mode memory 39, and a reception information memory 37. It is assumed that the operation unit 29 selects "a delayed announcement mode after completion of communication" and stores this mode in the announcement mode memory 39. In this event, when the radio paging operation is received during communication of the portable telephone portion, the control unit 23 makes the silent announcement unit 35 carry out call announcement in a silent mode and makes the reception information memory 37 memorize a message.
